Set deviceScaleFactor in a Playwright browser context
Install Playwright in your project if needed with npm install playwright. The following complete script launches Chromium, configures a 1280 × 720 CSS-pixel viewport and a device scale factor of 2, opens a page, and saves a device-resolution screenshot:

})();deviceScaleFactor is a browser-context option that emulates the device pixel ratio (DPR). Playwright documents its default as 1. Configure it when creating the context, before creating pages that should use that emulation. See the Playwright emulation guide and BrowserType API.
Choose the screenshot output scale separately
The context’s deviceScaleFactor and page.screenshot()’s scale setting do different jobs. The first emulates DPR; the second determines how many image pixels represent each CSS pixel:

With a 1280 × 720 CSS-pixel viewport and a device scale factor of 2, device-scale output is 2560 × 1440 pixels, while CSS-scale output is 1280 × 720 pixels. A larger image can take more storage and may be slower to handle downstream. The screenshot option is documented in the Page API.
Set the viewport and factor deliberately
viewport is measured in CSS pixels; it does not become a device-pixel measurement when DPR changes. Choose both values for the rendering you intend to reproduce. Playwright’s emulation guide gives 2560 × 1440 with a factor of 2 as an example. If you spread a predefined device descriptor and then want a different viewport, set your explicit viewport after the descriptor so it takes precedence.

Keep visual screenshot comparisons reproducible
A matching viewport and device scale factor are not, by themselves, a guarantee of identical pixels. Playwright notes that operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode can affect rendering. Generate and compare visual baselines in the same environment where possible, and keep those conditions stable between runs. See Playwright visual comparisons.
Troubleshoot unexpected screenshot dimensions
- The output is not larger at a higher factor: check whether you set
scale: 'css'. That option intentionally writes one image pixel per CSS pixel; usescale: 'device'for device-pixel output. - The dimensions are larger than expected: check both the CSS-pixel viewport and
deviceScaleFactor. With device-scale output, the image reflects device pixels rather than CSS pixels. - The page does not appear to use the configured DPR: ensure you passed
deviceScaleFactortobrowser.newContext()before creating the page, rather than treating it as a screenshot option. - A device preset overrides your viewport: place your explicit
viewportafter the spread descriptor so the intended dimensions take precedence. - Visual snapshots differ between runs: stabilize the browser and host environment as well as viewport and DPR, following Playwright’s visual comparison guidance.
