For a quiet whisper ASMR stream, begin with a clean microphone signal, add noise suppression only for mild steady noise, use an expander gently to lower room noise between phrases, control louder peaks with a compressor, and finish with a limiter. There is no OBS-published whisper preset or evidence-backed YouTube loudness target: settings depend on your mic, room and delivery, so test the chain before leaving a stream running.
Build a conservative filter chain
OBS documents what its audio filters do and offers general settings guidance, not a universal whisper-ASMR preset. Treat the sequence below as a cautious starting workflow, then tune by listening to your own voice and room.

- Set the microphone level at the source. Adjust the mic or interface first when possible. OBS says gain should generally be applied before the signal reaches OBS; if the source remains too quiet, add a Gain filter.
- Add Noise Suppression only if you hear mild, steady noise. Fan or environmental noise may be a suitable case. Start conservatively: too much suppression can distort the voice, and OBS says it is generally ineffective in a loud room.
- Use an Expander to reduce noise between phrases. It attenuates signal below a threshold and can open and close more smoothly than a Noise Gate. Set the threshold carefully so the filter does not remove quiet words or the beginnings of whispers.
- Place a Compressor near the beginning of the chain. It reduces louder sounds and can help control vocal peaks. OBS describes the filter’s controls and defaults, but does not identify them as appropriate whisper settings.
- Put a Limiter last. OBS says a limiter should be the last filter in the chain. It prevents peaks from rising above its threshold; its documented default threshold is −6 dB, not a YouTube or ASMR loudness target.
OBS’s general placement guidance puts the compressor near the beginning, the expander after compression or other effects, and the limiter last. Noise suppression is optional and should be added only when the noise warrants it; there is no single mandatory order for every setup. What each filter contributes—and what can go wrong

Choosing noise suppression
OBS documents three choices: RNNoise, Speex and NVIDIA Noise Removal. RNNoise is described as higher quality but more CPU-intensive than Speex; Speex is configurable. NVIDIA Noise Removal is available when the NVIDIA Broadcast SDK redistributable is installed. Use the least processing that makes a noticeable improvement, and listen for unnatural or damaged consonants.

Expander starting points from OBS
For general expander use, OBS suggests RMS detection, a 5–10 ms attack, a 50–120 ms release and a 4:1 ratio as a possible balance. These are general starting points in OBS’s documentation, not tested whisper-ASMR values. The threshold is especially dependent on how quietly you speak: if the first syllable or a soft word disappears, lower the threshold or reduce the attenuation.
Tune and validate before a continuous session
- Record a short sample that includes your quietest whisper, louder phrases, pauses and the room’s background sound.
- Listen on headphones to speech and silence between phrases. Check that the first syllable survives, consonants sound natural and small changes in your voice do not cause audible pumping.
- Change one filter or setting at a time, then record again. This makes it easier to identify whether an improvement came with a new artifact.
- Test the stream privately or otherwise verify the stream operation and configuration before committing to a continuous live session. OBS’s Studio Overview Guide recommends testing before the first stream.
Do not treat a filter’s decibel value as an ideal ASMR loudness target. The OBS documentation gives filter defaults and parameter guidance, including the limiter’s −6 dB default threshold, but does not publish a YouTube whisper loudness recommendation.

Troubleshoot common whisper-stream problems
- The first syllable of a whisper disappears: The expander or gate may be set too aggressively. Lower its threshold or ease the attenuation, then test the quietest words again.
- Speech sounds distorted or artificial: Reduce Noise Suppression, especially if the room is loud. OBS cautions that strong suppression can distort a voice and is generally ineffective against loud noise.
- Background noise rises and falls unnaturally: An expander may be opening and closing too abruptly or reacting to an unsuitable threshold. Revisit the threshold and timing; OBS’s general guidance recommends RMS detection and gives an attack of 5–10 ms and release of 50–120 ms as starting points.
- Louder words still peak too strongly: Check the Compressor’s behavior and whether it is positioned near the beginning of the chain. Keep the Limiter last to cap peaks; neither filter provides a prescribed YouTube loudness target.
- The signal is too quiet even before processing: Raise the mic or interface level at the source if possible. Use OBS’s Gain filter only if the signal remains too quiet.
