To enable Google Assistant on a Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet, set Google as the default digital assistant in Settings, then choose Google Assistant specifically if you want that experience rather than Gemini. You may also need to set up a Side button shortcut or Voice Match for hands-free activation.
Set Google as the default digital assistant

Open Settings.

Tap Apps, then Choose default apps.

Tap Digital assistant app, then tap the digital assistant choice shown on the next screen.

Select Google.
This sets Google as the device’s default assistant app. It may not by itself select Google Assistant as the specific experience, because Gemini can also act as the primary assistant. Samsung documents this additional Galaxy path to choose Google Assistant: Settings > Google services > All services > Search, Assistant & Voice > Google Assistant > Digital assistant from Google > Google Assistant. The Google-services labels can vary by software version. Samsung’s Google Assistant setup instructions cover both choices.

Choose how to open Google Assistant
Launch it with the Side button

Open Settings > Advanced features > Side button > Long press.

Choose Digital assistant.

Tap the settings icon beside that option and choose Google.

This is a separate shortcut assignment: changing the default assistant does not necessarily make a long press open it. Samsung’s Galaxy instructions document the Side button setup.

Open the Google or Assistant Voice Match settings and follow the on-screen instructions to configure Voice Match. This enables voice activation where available. Google says Android 8.0 and later can be configured to respond to “Hey Google” while the device is locked, but that behavior depends on the device’s settings. See Google’s Assistant setup guide.

If Gemini opens instead
First check that Google is selected as the digital assistant app, then use Samsung’s Google Assistant selection path above if you want Assistant specifically. Google also documents switching back from Gemini in the Gemini app: tap your profile menu and select Switch to Google Assistant. The exact available choices may depend on the device and software. Google’s Gemini guidance explains switching and assistant selection; Samsung’s Galaxy Gemini instructions cover the Samsung context.

Samsung states that Google Assistant is supported on Galaxy phones and tablets running Android 5.0 or higher. That is a compatibility baseline, not a promise that every feature or menu is available on every model, software version, or in every region. Samsung’s support page provides the baseline and setup guidance.

Google says Assistant interactions are saved to your Google Account when Web & App Activity is on. Switching from Gemini does not automatically delete activity already saved in Gemini Apps Activity. Review your Google Account activity controls if you want to manage or remove that data. Google’s Gemini account-activity guidance explains the distinction.
