To remove a white background from a PNG logo, first confirm the white area is part of the image rather than a transparent area shown as white by a preview. If it is opaque, select or mask the background, clear it, and export with transparency preserved as a PNG. Check the result over both light and dark backgrounds to catch halos or missing white artwork.
Check whether the white area is really part of the logo file
Open the image in an editor and view it against a contrasting canvas. Many editors use a checkerboard to indicate transparent pixels, but a white preview by itself does not prove that the image has an opaque white background. If the white area is already transparent, no removal is needed.

Choose a removal method that protects the artwork
For a flat white background
When the background is a uniform white field and the logo uses other colors, use a color-selection or wand tool to select the white area. Adjust the selection tolerance carefully, then clear the selected pixels. Photopea’s background-removal tutorial describes selecting a background, adjusting selection behavior, clearing it, and exporting the result as PNG. Its tutorial is older, so menu labels may have changed.
When the logo includes white details
A global operation that removes every white pixel can erase white lettering, highlights, or shapes in the logo. Use a layer mask or a selection constrained to the background, and inspect the edges before exporting. Refine the mask if it removes any artwork or leaves a fringe.

When the background is not uniform
A simple color selection may also select parts of the logo or leave patches behind when the background varies. Work with a mask or carefully constrained selections, checking the outline as you go. The cited tool documentation establishes selection and export workflows, not comparative results for different background types.
Export a PNG that retains transparency
Removing or masking the background and preserving it in the export are separate steps. Choose PNG and make sure the editor retains transparency: saving as PNG alone does not turn an opaque white field transparent. JPG cannot preserve transparent pixels, so it is unsuitable for a transparent raster logo. Photopea documents PNG export for this purpose in its tutorial.

For partial transparency along smooth, antialiased edges, use an alpha-capable PNG format. GIMP’s documentation explains PNG export options and notes that PNG8 supports only one-bit transparency. Its transparency documentation covers exporting images with transparent regions.

Canva’s documented path is Share > Download: choose PNG and enable Transparent background. Its Help Center lists Pro, Teams, Business, Education, and Nonprofits plans as eligible for this feature. Plan eligibility and interface details can change; check Canva’s current instructions before relying on the option.

GIMP
GIMP’s documentation explains how to save images with transparency and export as PNG. For partially transparent edges, avoid PNG8, which supports only one-bit transparency; see the transparency guide and PNG export guide.
Photopea
Photopea’s tutorial demonstrates selecting and clearing a background before exporting as PNG. Because the tutorial is older, its menu names may not match the current interface exactly.
Photoshop
Adobe documents PNG as an available format in Photoshop’s Export As settings. That documentation supports the format choice, but does not provide a specific recipe for removing a white logo background.

Inspect the exported file before using it
- Reopen the exported PNG or preview it over a contrasting background.
- Check both a light and a dark background. Look for a solid rectangle, leftover white pixels, a pale halo, or missing white logo details.
- If you see an artifact, return to the mask or selection, refine it, export again, and repeat the check.
