To position a page-border line one inch inside the page edge, use desktop Word’s Design > Page Borders > Options controls. If you mean one-inch margins around the text instead, use Layout > Margins > Custom Margins; margins and page borders are separate settings.
Position a page border one inch from the edge
In desktop Word, the border’s distance from the page edge is set in Options, not by its line-width setting. Microsoft lists this page-border feature for Word for Microsoft 365, Word 2024, Word 2021, Word 2019 and Word 2016, including Mac editions. - Open the document in the desktop version of Word.
- Select Design > Page Borders.
- In Borders and Shading, choose a border setting, then select the line style, color and width you want.
- Select Options. Adjust the distance settings to one inch, checking the measurement labels and preview in the dialog.
- Select OK. Review the page and, if you plan to print, check Print Preview as well.
The Width control changes how thick the border line is; Options changes how far it sits from the page edge. Word does not provide a named “one-inch border” preset, so confirm the distance in Options rather than treating a one-inch line width as an inset.

Margins define the space between the page edges and the document’s text; they do not draw a decorative outline. To set them, choose Layout > Margins > Custom Margins, enter 1 inch for the margins you need, and select OK. In a document with multiple sections, the change applies to the current section. Choose which pages get the border
Word applies page borders by section, not by individual page. To border just one page in the middle of a document, make that page its own section by inserting section breaks before and after it, then use the border dialog’s Apply to control to select the intended section. Follow Microsoft’s section-break guidance if you need help isolating the page.
What Word for the web can and cannot do
Word for the web preserves page borders created in desktop Word, but it does not let you add, edit or delete them. It also cannot insert section breaks. Troubleshoot a border that will not print
A border can appear in the document but fall outside the printer’s printable area. Microsoft identifies the printer’s minimum margin as a common cause; the printable area varies by printer, so an offset that works on one device may not print on another.

- In desktop Word, open Design > Page Borders > Options and check the Measure from setting, the border position and the preview.
- If the border is still missing in the printout, increase the corresponding page margin and check Print Preview again.
