Sometimes a coding-agent session can feel like a slot machine: you send a prompt, wait for an uncertain result, and try again when the answer is almost right. That is a useful metaphor for a pattern of use, not evidence that coding agents cause gambling addiction. The practical test is whether each round produces verified progress—or merely triggers another prompt.
Why the slot-machine comparison resonates
Quentin Rousseau, CTO and co-founder of Rootly, described coding agents this way in an interview with Axios: “They operate like slot machines. You hit one prompt, you get an answer, you get some coding done.” That captures the uncertain reward of agent work, but it is one developer’s account, not a finding about developers as a group.

Other developers interviewed by Axios described intense use, context switching, disrupted sleep, and difficulty disengaging. Simon Willison said it can be easy to “pop” the limited amount a person can hold in mind at once. Tim Dettmers described a tension: agents make more work seem possible while increasing demands on focus and mental bandwidth. These accounts illustrate experiences, not how common they are. Deadline-driven intensity and all-nighters also existed before coding agents.
What slot-machine research does—and does not—show
A peer-reviewed fMRI study examined healthy participants playing a simplified simulated slot-machine game. It reported lower response signals in reinforcement-related brain structures after wins and increased anticipatory signals while reels spun during a single session. The study concerns simulated gambling, not prompting an AI system; it cannot establish that coding agents produce the same neural response or cause addiction. Read the study.

The researchers also noted that their experimental game differed from commercial slot machines in win and near-miss rates, near-miss patterns, prize structures, outcome schedules, and reel-spin timing. The findings are therefore a bounded account of one gambling experiment, not a precise model of gambling broadly, much less of software development.
In the sources available for this article, no direct study measures gambling-like reinforcement, compulsive use, or addiction caused by coding agents. The analogy can help describe uncertain, repeated prompting; it should not be treated as a diagnosis or a proven equivalence.

More agent activity is not automatically more productivity
An Anthropic survey of 1,260 quantitative social scientists, fielded in February and March 2026, found that 20% of respondents reported using coding agents. The survey was recruited through an offer of Claude Max access and was not representative, so those figures do not describe software developers generally.
Within that survey, coding-agent users reported starting more projects and posting more working papers. These were descriptive comparisons, subject to self-selection; they do not show that agents caused the difference. The survey found no evidence that these respondents submitted more new journal papers or resubmitted faster. It is context for claims about productivity, not evidence about developer burnout or the effects of coding agents on software teams.

Agent use is better assessed by the work it produces and the cost of checking it than by prompt counts. Span’s observational analysis of trajectories from 103 engineering teams over 12 weeks, from May through July 2026, considered prompt clarity, environment readiness, and quality stewardship. It reported associations between these factors and token efficiency, autonomy, and review rework; the analysis does not prove causality. For example, one point higher in its quality-stewardship score was associated with 39% fewer review cycles per 1,000 lines of AI-authored code merged. That is an observed relationship, not a guaranteed result of changing a workflow. Read Span’s analysis.
Google Research makes a related point about evaluating proactive agents: activity alone is not enough; the agent’s decisions about what matters next, what evidence supports it, and how it adapts to feedback matter. Read Google Research’s discussion.

How to check whether your session is productive
Before another prompt, assess the session across a few concrete questions. These are practical checks, not a clinically validated screening tool.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Outcome: Is there accepted, useful code or a verified learning result—not just a plausible-looking response?
- Evidence: Have you checked tests, outputs, and assumptions? If you are prompting again because the result feels close, identify what still needs proof.
- Task definition: Did you specify scope, constraints, and what “done” means before asking the agent to work?
- Review cost: Has the agent reduced effort, or has it increased the human review and rework required?
- Understanding: Can you explain and maintain the change? Did the workflow leave room to learn what the code does?
- Stopping rule: Is there a clear point to stop, escalate, or take a break?
Set a stopping point before the next prompt
For a concrete task, write down the intended change and a check that would demonstrate success—for example, a relevant test passing or a specified behavior appearing in the output. If the agent misses that check, decide whether to clarify the task, inspect the failure yourself, or stop. Do not use another prompt as a substitute for identifying what went wrong.

If you cannot say what success looks like, or each disappointing response simply leads to another attempt, pause and redefine the task. If the work is verified, reviewable, and understandable, iteration is doing its job. The distinction is not how many times you prompt; it is whether the next step has a reason and the session ends with evidence of useful progress.
