Set a Default ChatGPT Model for Your Enterprise Workspace

ChatGPT Enterprise admins can set a starting model for Chat, but access must be configured separately. Chat and Work & Codex have independent defaults.

Yes. ChatGPT Enterprise administrators can set a starting default for Chat, choosing an administrator-selected model and reasoning level or letting each new chat use the member’s last available choice. This setting does not give anyone access to a model they otherwise cannot use; model access must be configured separately.

What an Enterprise admin can set

Workspace owners and admins configure starting defaults in Workspace settings. The available controls can vary with the product and workspace configuration, so check the Models page for the product you intend to configure. See OpenAI’s workspace settings guide.

For Chat, the documented choices are an administrator-selected default model and reasoning level, or “User’s last choice.” With the latter, a new chat starts with the member’s most recent available choice. If a saved choice is an older model, ChatGPT may promote it to the current recommended generation.

Choose the right starting behavior for Chat

Setting What happens in a new chat Best fit
Administrator-selected model and reasoning level Chat starts with the model and reasoning level selected by the administrator, subject to the member’s available access. Teams that want a consistent starting point.
“User’s last choice” Chat starts with the member’s most recent available choice; an older saved model may be promoted to the current recommended generation. Teams that prefer members to retain their own recent selection.

The default is a starting point, not a guarantee that every member sees or can use the same model. Workspace eligibility, model-access settings, and role-based controls determine the available choices.

Chat and Work & Codex have separate defaults

Chat and Work & Codex have independent starting-default settings. Configure the relevant product rather than assuming a choice made for Chat also applies to Work & Codex. Depending on workspace support, Work & Codex settings may also include speed, Fast Mode availability, and role-specific overrides. The exact controls depend on the workspace configuration; consult the workspace settings documentation.

Set a default and check model access

  1. Open Workspace settings and go to the Models page for Chat or Work & Codex.
  2. For Chat, choose the administrator-selected model and reasoning level, or select User’s last choice if members should start with their own most recent available choice.
  3. Separately review model access for the workspace and relevant roles. A starting default does not enable a model or override access restrictions.
  4. Check the model picker from a member account or role to confirm which choices are actually available to that audience.

OpenAI’s role-based access documentation explains how feature access and member availability are controlled separately from defaults.

Why a member may not see the default model

  • The model is not enabled for that workspace or role. Review model-access and role-based settings; selecting a starting default does not grant access.
  • The member is not eligible for that model. Enterprise and Edu availability can depend on workspace settings and rollout status.
  • The control is on a different product page. Chat and Work & Codex defaults are independent, so check the settings for the product the member is using.

Before announcing that a specific model is available to everyone, verify the current workspace settings and what members see in their model picker. OpenAI’s Enterprise and Edu models and limits documentation describes workspace-dependent availability and rollout.
