Session Messaging Privacy: An Interview Guide to What “Private” Really Means

Session’s account and messaging design addresses some privacy concerns, but calls, Communities, device access, recovery, and recipient behavior matter too. Use these questions to explore what “private” means in practice.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Session says it does not require a phone number or email and that its messages are end-to-end encrypted and onion-routed. Those claims address different parts of privacy: an account can be pseudonymous without making every activity anonymous, and message protections do not automatically extend to calls, Communities, a compromised device, or content a recipient saves. Use this interview guide to uncover what someone expects a private messenger to protect—and where Session’s documented features have limits.

What does “private messaging” mean to you?

Begin by asking what the person actually wants to keep private. “Privacy” can mean hiding message text from intermediaries, keeping a phone number off an account, concealing who is talking to whom, limiting exposure of an IP address, or controlling what happens to a message later. These are separate questions, and one feature does not answer all of them.

  • When choosing a messaging app, what matters most to you: message text, your contacts, your phone number, your location, or something else?
  • What made you try Session, or what would make you consider it?
  • What would count as a privacy failure for you?
  • Would you trade convenience—such as easy account recovery or calls—for less exposure of identifying information?

Does Session require a phone number or email?

Session says its accounts do not require a phone number or email. Its account documentation describes identity as a generated Ed25519 key pair, represented by an Account ID. That can make an account pseudonymous, but pseudonymity is not the same as guaranteed anonymity: a person may identify themselves through a profile, what they share, or activity outside the app. Session’s account documentation explains the key-based account model.

  • How did you create your account, and what information did you expect to provide?
  • Would you use an alias, your real name, or a profile image? What might connect that choice back to you?
  • How would you decide whom to give your Account ID to?
  • If you needed to confirm that an Account ID belongs to a particular person, what other channel would feel safe and practical?

Can Session read my messages?

Session Support answers, “Can Session read my messages?” with: “No. All messages are end-to-end encrypted and onion-routed.” That is Session’s description of its system, not an independent guarantee that every threat is covered. End-to-end encryption is intended to protect message contents from intermediaries in transit; it does not by itself protect an unlocked or compromised device, prevent a recipient from disclosing a message, or establish how every backup path behaves. Session describes its message encryption and routing in its FAQ and support answer.

Session says onion routing is designed so no single server knows both a message’s origin and destination. This is a claim about the documented routing architecture, not proof that no metadata exists or that a user can never be identified. Session also says its clients are open source and reports an audit by Quarkslab; those facts can inform a trust discussion, but neither makes software risk-free. Session’s documentation overview describes the service, and its FAQ sets out its privacy claims.

  • What do you think an end-to-end encrypted app might still learn about your activity?
  • Does routing through multiple nodes change your trust in a service? Why?
  • What would you want an independent audit or transparency report to tell you before relying on a privacy claim?
  • Which matters more to you: protecting message contents, hiding relationship metadata, or keeping your identity separate from the account?

Are Session calls private?

Calls do not currently have the same routing description as messages in Session’s FAQ. Session says calls use peer-to-peer networking and expose a user’s IP address to the call partner and to an STF-operated STUN/TURN server. The FAQ describes onion-routed calls as forthcoming, not as a current capability. Because calling is a changing feature, check the current Session FAQ before relying on this distinction.

Are Session groups and Communities equally private?

No. Session distinguishes small group chats from Communities. It says small group chats are end-to-end encrypted. Communities are public, self-hosted spaces and are not fully end-to-end encrypted; Session describes them as less private than direct chats or groups. Do not treat a Community as a private group just because both are accessed through Session. See the feature distinctions in the Session FAQ.

  • Do you distinguish a private group chat from a public community space?
  • What kinds of conversations would you avoid in a public channel?
  • Before posting, do you know who can access the space and what confidentiality protections apply?

Do disappearing messages permanently delete messages?

Session describes its disappearing-message timer, or TTL, as removing a message from both devices and the Session network’s swarm after the selected interval. That describes deletion along the documented app and network path; it does not establish that a recipient cannot copy, photograph, screenshot, or otherwise preserve the content. Session’s FAQ describes the timer and deletion behavior.

What happens if you lose your device or cannot access your account?

Session says an account can be restored on a new device using its recovery password, a mnemonic seed. Recovery therefore depends on keeping that material available and protected: someone who loses access to the seed may not be able to restore the account through that method, while someone who obtains it may be able to restore the account. Session’s FAQ also describes local database encryption with a PIN or password on desktop; platform availability and setup details should be checked in the current FAQ.

  • Would you be comfortable keeping a recovery phrase or seed? Where would you store it?
  • What would you expect to lose if you could not recover the account?
  • What concerns you most if someone has physical access to your phone or computer?
  • How do you currently protect messaging apps on your device?
