It is also discontinued. Sequential’s product page says production ceased in 2024. So the 2026 question isn’t only whether it’s good. It’s whether a used or leftover unit is worth buying at whatever price you find.
This review doesn’t claim hands-on testing and gives no numeric scores. It uses Sequential’s specifications and the independent Sound On Sound review, and it sets out the criteria that matter for deciding.

The short verdict
On paper, the Prophet X is one of the broadest palettes in a single keyboard: sampled acoustic, electronic and cinematic material, shaped with synthesis tools and analog filtering. Sound On Sound’s independent review describes it as an ambitious, flexible mix of analogue and sample-based synthesis. It also names the hefty price as a limiting factor.

It suits them less if they want a purely analog Prophet, or if they can’t check the condition and return terms of a discontinued unit.
#1 Best Overall
- 16-voice Hybrid Synthesizer with 2 x 16-bit/48kHz Sample-based Instruments
- Semi-weighted Aftertouch-enabled Keyboard
- Stereo Analog Filters
- 150GB Sample Library
- 2 Digital Oscillats
What the Prophet X is
Sequential calls it a “Samples-Plus-Synthesis Hybrid.” Its description of the engine is two simultaneous stereo sample-based instruments (16-bit, 48 kHz) plus two high-resolution digital oscillators per voice, all run through analog filters. Sequential’s own wording is that it is “a potent fusion of samples-plus-synthesis and is Sequential’s most ground-breaking evolution of the Prophet yet.” That is manufacturer positioning, not an independently verified ranking.
Voice modes
- Bi-timbral operation.
- 8-voice stereo.
- 16-voice mono/stereo.
- 32-voice paraphonic.
The trade-off is the usual one. Higher voice counts come from reduced stereo or per-voice independence, and paraphonic mode shares processing across notes. Check which mode suits your patches.
Rank #2
- 61-key 10-voice Polyphonic Analog Synthesizer with 2 VCOs
- Full-sized Semi-weighted Fatar
- 4-pole Lowpass Filter
- Aftertouch
- Poly-Mod
Sample handling
Sequential lists these editing controls: sample start and end, loop size and center, loop on/off, reverse, stretch, and sample/bit-rate reduction. Loop modes include forward and forward/reverse. Each instrument has its own high-pass and low-pass filter, and delays are available as modulation destinations.
The sample library
| Item | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Factory content | 150 GB, 16-bit / 48 kHz | Sequential product specifications |
| User or third-party storage | 50 GB | Sequential product specifications |
| Content types | Acoustic and electronic instruments, ambient/cinematic effects | Sequential launch announcement |
The library is large but bounded. The 50 GB user area limits how much third-party material fits at once, so you will be curating rather than loading everything.

- Demo 61-key 5-voice Analog Synth
A common reader question is how good the orchestral samples are and whether there are plenty to choose from. The documented facts are the library size and its acoustic, electronic and cinematic categories. This article makes no claim about orchestral realism. Audition the specific sounds you need, such as strings or brass, in a shop or demo before buying.
Sequential’s support area offers a manual and a sample-mapping utility for importing your own material. A February 2020 Sequential announcement for OS 2.2 said SampleRobot Pro 6.5 supports the Prophet X for auto-sampling and sample editing. That announcement is historical, so confirm current software compatibility before relying on it.
Rank #4
- 2/4-pole Resonant Lowpass Curtis Filters; Bi-timbral Operation
- 61-key 8-voice Analog Synthesizer with Per-voice Dual DCOs
- Polyphonic Step Sequencer
- Waveshape Modulation
- Onboard FX Engine
Playing and workflow
- Keyboard: five octaves, semi-weighted, with velocity and channel aftertouch.
- Display: three OLED screens.
- Connectivity: MIDI and USB, with an integrated power supply.
- Sequencer: Sequential’s May 2018 announcement cites a polyphonic step sequencer of up to 64 steps and six notes per step per layer. That is a manufacturer specification, not a measured result.
- Size: 97.6 cm long × 34.3 cm deep × 10.9 cm high (38.44 × 13.53 × 4.13 in).
Semi-weighted keys with aftertouch suit pads, synth leads and expressive layered sounds. Players who want a fully weighted piano action should try it first. At nearly a metre wide, it also needs a proper stand and room.
Strengths and limits
Strengths
- A wide palette from one instrument, including layered stereo sampled sources.
- Analog filtering applied to sampled material.
- Serious polyphony options, including a 32-voice paraphonic mode.
- Room for custom samples through the 50 GB user area.
Limits
- High price, flagged by Sound On Sound.
- Discontinued, so support and availability depend on the used market and any remaining stock.
- A finite user-sample area.
- Large, heavy-feeling footprint for a gigging keyboard.
Should you buy one in 2026?
I can’t state current used prices or stock. Check live listings instead of relying on old review figures. Before paying, run through this list:

- 6-voice Analog Synthesizer with Discrete VCOs and Filters
- Enhanced Poly Mod Section
- Dual Effects Section
- 49-key
- Confirm whether the unit is used or leftover new stock.
- Check the keybed, aftertouch, displays and every control for faults.
- Confirm the unit boots, sample content loads and the OS version is current.
- Get return terms in writing, or buy from a dealer that offers them.
- Audition the sounds you actually need, especially if realism of a particular instrument family matters.
How to compare it with alternatives

| Library | Included content and the user-sample workflow |
| Keys | Size, feel, aftertouch |
| Workflow | How quickly you can design sounds and manage samples |
| Practicalities | Footprint and connectivity |
| Risk | Used price, condition and support |
