For Google Search, answer engine optimization (AEO) is not a replacement for SEO. Google says the same SEO fundamentals apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode: create useful, distinctive content, make it accessible to Search, and measure how it performs. AEO and generative engine optimization (GEO) are labels for work aimed at AI-search visibility, not a Google-approved set of shortcuts. Other answer engines may work differently, so this conclusion should not be assumed to apply to every platform.
What do SEO and AEO mean?
Search engine optimization (SEO) is the work of helping search engines discover, understand, and present a site’s pages. It includes content quality and relevance as well as technical access, clear organization, and links between pages.

Answer engine optimization (AEO) describes efforts to make content more visible in systems that respond directly to questions. Generative engine optimization (GEO) is a related term, often used for visibility in AI-generated answers. The labels are not applied consistently across the industry; in Google’s guidance, optimizing for its generative search features is still SEO.
Google’s Search Central guide, last updated July 10, 2026, puts its position this way: “From Google Search’s perspective, optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO.” That is Google’s position about its own Search features, not a claim that every independent answer engine uses the same index, ranking systems, or signals.

SEO vs. AEO: what changes, and what stays the same?
| Aspect | SEO | AEO or GEO |
|---|---|---|
| Target surface | Search results, including conventional organic listings and other Search features. | AI-generated answers and the sources linked from them. For Google, these features draw on core Search systems; other platforms may differ. |
| Core work | Publish relevant, helpful content and make pages discoverable, understandable, and technically accessible. | Much of the same work, with particular attention to fully answering the user’s need and presenting information clearly enough to be useful as a source. |
| Outcome to track | Organic Search performance, such as visibility and traffic. | Whether content appears or is cited in an AI answer, and what visits or other outcomes follow. |
| What a publisher controls | Content, site access, and implementation. | The same factors; a publisher cannot guarantee inclusion, ranking, or citation. |
The practical difference is mainly the surface being measured and the way a user may receive information. Google describes its AI experiences as using relevant, up-to-date pages retrieved through Search. Its systems can also use query fan-out—generating related searches to gather information for a complex question. That makes complete, useful coverage valuable; it does not mean you need a separate page for every possible related query.
What should you do to improve visibility in AI answers?
Start with the user’s actual question, then make the answer useful on its own—not merely easy for a system to extract. Google’s current guidance emphasizes unique, helpful, reliable, people-first content, organized clearly and supported by relevant images or video where they add value.

- Cover the real information need. Address the main question and the important context a reader needs to act on the answer. Add specific, distinctive information rather than producing near-identical pages for small wording variations.
- Organize for people. Use descriptive titles and headings, concise explanations, and a logical page structure. Include relevant images or video when they help explain the subject; do not add media simply to satisfy a supposed AI requirement.
- Make important content accessible. Ensure pages are publicly available and crawlable, with important information presented in a way Search can access. Follow Google’s relevant guidance for links, images, video, structured data, and JavaScript.
- Review whether pages are eligible. Google says a page needs to be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet in Search to be eligible for its generative AI features. Eligibility is not a guarantee: Google says meeting requirements and policies does not mean it will crawl, index, or serve a page.
- Measure the outcome. Use Google Search Console’s Generative AI performance report to monitor visibility in Google’s generative AI features, as Google recommends. Evaluate visibility separately from visits, and visits separately from business results.
Do you need special schema, content chunking, or llms.txt?
No special structured data is required for Google AI Overviews or AI Mode. Google says there is no special schema.org markup to add for its generative AI features. Structured data may still be useful for conventional Search features when it accurately describes the page and follows the relevant feature guidance.

Treat these claims cautiously when they are pitched as requirements or guaranteed ranking tactics. Focus instead on content quality, technical accessibility, and the relevant Search guidance.

How strong is the evidence that AEO tactics work?
Different kinds of evidence answer different questions. Google’s documentation states what Google recommends for its own Search features; observational studies can identify patterns in their samples but cannot establish that a particular change causes citations or applies across every engine and topic.
What one cross-engine study found
The 2025 study “AI Answer Engine Citation Behavior: An Empirical Analysis of the GEO16 Framework” examined 1,702 citations from 70 product-intent prompts across Brave Summary, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity, and audited 1,100 unique URLs. It reported an association between overall page quality and citations, and identified metadata and freshness, semantic HTML, and structured data among the pillars most strongly associated with citations in its corpus. The sample focused on English-language B2B SaaS pages. It does not show that changing one element causes a citation or that the findings generalize to other subjects and platforms.
Why traffic claims need context
A 2026 working paper by Mehrzad Khosravi and a coauthor, “Impact of AI Search Summaries on Website Traffic: Evidence from Google AI Overviews and Wikipedia,” used Wikipedia’s multilingual structure and staggered geographic rollout in its analysis. It reported reductions of 5.45% and 4.82% in English Wikipedia external-search traffic in the comparisons it measured. Those estimates apply to the paper’s English Wikipedia sample and study design; they are not a forecast for every publisher.
Google’s own 2025 account said overall traffic to sites was relatively stable in its assessment, while traffic shifted between sites. Google also said users continue to click when they want to explore further and characterized those clicks as more valuable. That is a company-published assessment, not an independent causal study, and it does not rule out losses for individual publishers or negate the narrower Wikipedia findings.

Can an SEO tool tell you whether Google will cite your page?
No third-party SEO tool has access to Google’s internal ranking or AI systems, according to Google. Tools can support audits, reporting, or external observation of answer-engine visibility, but their estimates are not privileged insight into Google’s systems and cannot promise a citation. Keep Google Search Console measurements distinct from estimates gathered by monitoring other AI products.
