No—not for Google Search. Google says its AI Overviews and AI Mode use core Search ranking and quality systems, and that optimizing for those features is still SEO. Keep the technical and content fundamentals; do not abandon them for a separate set of AI-only tricks. New search interfaces can still affect which sources people see and whether they click through. Google’s guidance does not establish how every independent AI answer engine selects sources.
Why traditional SEO still matters in Google’s AI search
Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode retrieve relevant pages from the Search index using its core ranking and quality systems. The process can include retrieval-augmented generation and query fan-out, in which the system explores related searches to find useful material. Google’s own conclusion is direct: “From Google Search’s perspective, optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO.” Its guide was updated July 10, 2026. That does not mean the search experience is unchanged. A generative answer may present sources differently from a conventional results page, and being visible in Search is not the same as earning a referral visit. The practical distinction is between maintaining the work that helps a page qualify and serve readers, and measuring how a changed interface affects discovery and traffic.

What to prioritize instead of AI-only SEO tactics
Make pages useful and distinctive
Google recommends helpful, reliable, people-first content that contributes something beyond a generic restatement. Original experience, a distinct point of view, clear organization, and relevant high-quality images or video can make a page more useful to readers. The goal is not to write for a presumed AI preference; it is to make the page worth finding and using.

Keep the established technical baseline
Google’s Search Essentials baseline includes using words readers use in prominent places, making links crawlable, and following relevant guidance for images, video, structured data, and JavaScript. The generative AI guide adds that content must be crawlable and the page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a Search snippet to be considered for generative features.
Eligibility is not a promise: Google says meeting requirements and policies does not guarantee that it will crawl, index, or serve a page. Technical fixes can remove barriers, but they cannot guarantee inclusion.
Rank #2
Do not mistake optional or unsupported tactics for requirements
Google says its generative Search features do not require an llms.txt file, tiny content chunks, AI-only rewrites, or special structured data. It also says there is no ideal page length for these features. Structured data may still be useful as part of an overall SEO strategy, including for rich results, but it is not a special generative-search prerequisite. Google’s guidance

How to decide whether an AI-search practice is worth doing
| Question | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Does the platform document it? | Prefer practices supported by that platform’s official guidance. Google explicitly says established SEO remains relevant to its generative Search features. |
| Does it improve reader value or technical access? | Prioritize distinct, helpful content and crawlability over changes made only to satisfy an assumed AI preference. |
| Is the claim platform-specific? | Treat Google’s guidance as guidance for Google Search; verify other answer engines independently. |
| Are you measuring visibility or visits? | Track discovery separately from referral traffic. A page’s appearance in an AI feature does not by itself tell you whether users clicked through. |
What the available evidence says about clicks
Google’s VP and Head of Search, Liz Reid, wrote on August 6, 2025, that Google’s total organic click volume to websites was relatively stable year over year and that average click quality had increased in Google’s data. She also noted that traffic shifts among sites and that some quick-answer searches may end without a click. The post does not provide a numeric estimate of click changes, so these are Google’s aggregate claims rather than a quantified independent measure. Reid wrote: “We continue to send billions of clicks to the web every day and are committed to prioritizing the web in our AI experiences in Search.” Google’s August 6, 2025 post
A different kind of evidence comes from a preregistered field experiment reported on arXiv on August 18, 2026. Wang, Gleason, Bart, Wilson, and Metaxa studied 1,100 participants using Google Search. They reported that hiding AI Overviews and AI Mode increased click-through to publishers, while an AI Mode-only experience reduced click-through and eroded measured user experience and trust. This is one experiment, not a universal estimate across queries, websites, or AI platforms. Its results are not directly interchangeable with Google’s year-over-year aggregate reporting because the methods and measures differ. The study abstract
The two findings answer different questions: Google describes its aggregate traffic data, while the experiment compares specific search experiences under study conditions. Neither makes referral traffic a reliable proxy for visibility, nor does either show that traditional SEO should be replaced.

Google points site owners to the Search Console generative AI performance report for measuring discovery through its AI Search and Discover features. Interpret discovery metrics alongside referral traffic: a source may receive exposure without a corresponding click.
