The clearest current headline is that SparkToro’s analysis of Similarweb clickstream data found that 68% of U.S. Google searches ended without a click during January–April 2026. That is a U.S. search-behavior measure—not a global estimate, a measure of organic click-through rate, or a count of searches that produced no value.
Other widely repeated SEO figures measure different things: clicks, page traffic, keyword search volume, or the presence of an AI feature. They are not interchangeable. The figures below include their dates and known scope; where the available source does not establish a sample or definition, that limitation is stated rather than filled in with an assumption.

How often do Google searches end without a click?
“Zero-click” can mean different things in different studies. SparkToro’s 2026 measure means no click to any destination in the search journey, not simply no click to the website being searched for. Its article also recounts earlier estimates, but those should not be read as a perfectly comparable time series: study methods and samples may differ.

How marketers should use the zero-click figures
Treat the latest figure as evidence about the search experience in the measured U.S. data, not as a forecast of the share of your own impressions that will fail to bring visits. The historic estimates provide context, but differences in study design can affect the apparent change. For a site-level decision, compare your own Search Console impressions and clicks by query, device, country, and search appearance over consistent periods.
#1 Best Overall
A search without an external click is not necessarily a search without an answer: a person may get what they need from the results page. For marketers, this makes visibility, brand recognition, and outcomes beyond a website visit relevant alongside organic sessions. The clickstream statistic alone does not measure those outcomes or establish SEO’s return on investment.
Do AI Overviews reduce organic clicks?
The figures below are estimates reported by Ahrefs and cited in SparkToro’s 2026 article. They indicate an association between AI Overviews and click behavior, not proof that the feature causes the same loss for every site, query, or search result. The precise study window, query sample, and geographic scope are not established in the cited account.

| Figure | Source and period | What it describes |
|---|---|---|
| More than 20% | Ahrefs estimate cited by SparkToro, 2026; underlying study period not stated in the account | Share of searches on which AI Overviews appeared, as reported by SparkToro. Query sample and geography are not stated in the account. |
| Nearly 60% lower click-through rate | Ahrefs estimate cited by SparkToro, 2026; underlying study period not stated in the account | Reported CTR difference associated with an AI Overview being present. The account does not establish that this is a causal effect or a universal result. |
| About one third of one percent | SparkToro, 2026 | Share of searches represented by AI Mode in the data discussed in the article. This is distinct from the share displaying an AI Overview. |
What the AI data does—and does not—tell you
AI Overviews and AI Mode are separate search experiences, so their percentages should not be combined. SparkToro’s account attributes the broader development of no-click searching to Google features that keep people on the platform over time; it does not assign the entire change to AI Mode.
Use the CTR estimate as a reason to inspect exposure, not as a multiplier to apply to a traffic forecast. Check whether your own queries show an AI Overview, then compare impressions, clicks, and position for those queries against a consistent baseline. Segment by query intent and device where your reporting allows it; a single blended CTR can conceal meaningful differences.

What do page traffic and keyword statistics say?
Ahrefs’ 2026 SEO statistics roundup lists these figures, but the available account does not establish the underlying analysis details needed to treat them as universal benchmarks. They describe different populations: pages in one figure and keywords in the other.
| Figure | Source and period | Population and definition |
|---|---|---|
| 96.55% | Ahrefs, 2026 roundup; underlying analysis period not stated here | Share of pages in Ahrefs’ analyzed set reported as receiving zero Google search traffic. The roundup figure does not establish that the set represents all pages on the web; the underlying study’s sample and definition should be checked before broader use. |
| 94.74% | Ahrefs, 2026 roundup; underlying analysis period not stated here | Share of keywords in Ahrefs’ analyzed set reported as having ten or fewer monthly searches. The underlying keyword sample, geography, and search-volume method are not stated here. |
Why these are not measures of SEO failure
A page with no recorded Google search traffic is not necessarily useless, unindexed, or unsuccessful: the figure does not tell you the page’s purpose, its other traffic sources, or whether it serves an existing customer. Likewise, a keyword with low estimated monthly volume may still be valuable for a narrow audience or a high-intent need. Neither percentage describes the expected performance of a particular site.

A roundup can place figures next to one another even when their underlying studies answer unrelated questions. Ahrefs’ 2026 roundup attributes statistics to multiple publishers, including Ahrefs, SparkToro, BrightEdge, StatCounter, Seer Interactive, First Page Sage, and Google. Publication year does not necessarily equal data-collection year.

Before using a number in a forecast, presentation, or strategy document, follow it to its original study and record the measurement period, geography, sample, and definition. If those details are not available, label the number as a secondary-source estimate and avoid treating it as a market-wide fact.

How should marketers apply these statistics?
- Start with the decision. Decide whether you need to estimate search demand, evaluate your own clicks, understand result-page visibility, or benchmark a technical issue. Choose a statistic that measures that outcome rather than one with a similar-sounding label.
- Keep external benchmarks separate from site data. Use published studies for context. Use your own analytics and Search Console reporting to evaluate the queries, pages, countries, and devices relevant to your business.
- Compare like with like. Keep time windows and segments consistent. When the search layout changes, annotate the period and review impressions as well as clicks so a CTR shift is not mistaken for a change in demand.
- State the caveat next to the number. Include source, data period, geography, population, and metric definition wherever known. If a material detail is not stated, say so rather than implying precision.
- Do not turn association into a guarantee. These benchmarks do not promise rankings, traffic, or a fixed effect from an AI feature. Treat them as context for hypotheses that you can test against your own results.
