In Paul McNally’s review for The Escapist, updated 24 September 2026, its most compelling use is a flight-simulator cockpit: cut panels with switch holes and display openings, plus labels and layered acrylic. That potential comes with a premium reported UK starting price of £2,249, space and extraction demands, laser hazards, and a software workflow the reviewer says still needs polish.
What the Bambu Lab R1 is—and who it suits
The R1 is a standalone CO₂ laser cutter and engraver. Its appeal is the move from decorating a hobby room to fabricating repeatable parts for projects in it. A cockpit panel, for example, can be designed digitally, positioned over photographed material, cut, revised, and made again. The reviewer describes using the machine for games-room projects while building a flight-simulator cockpit.

That makes the R1 most relevant to a maker who expects to cut materials and build useful objects, and who can provide the necessary workspace and extraction. If your main interest is occasional surface engraving, a machine of this scale and price may be more capability than you need.
Projects the review describes
McNally’s examples include signs, arcade decorations, logos, display stands, wall art, coasters, and labels, as well as cockpit components. The value is not just the variety of objects: digital designs can be adjusted and reproduced, which is useful when a project needs several matching panels or a revised version.

| Processing area with optional Conveyor | 600 × 3,000 mm |
| Maximum movement speed | 1,000 mm/s |
| Maximum acceleration | 20,000 mm/s² |
| Short-focus lens spot | 0.11 mm |
| Reported cutting capacity | Up to 15 mm black walnut plywood with the supplied short-focus lens; up to 18 mm with optional medium- or long-focus lenses; and up to 20 mm acrylic |
| Positioning and motion accuracy | Standard positioning accuracy under 0.2 mm; under 0.1 mm absolute motion accuracy across 600 mm with the optional Vision Encoder |
| Dimensions and weight | 940 × 560 × 200 mm; 33.5 kg |
| Connectivity and workflow features | Wi-Fi and USB, Bambu Suite software, automatic focus and laser alignment, and dual-camera positioning |
The review says the CO₂ laser can cut clear acrylic, unlike common blue diode lasers, and lists wood, acrylic, leather, fabric, paper, EVA foam, and shell among materials it can cut or engrave. It also says glass, ceramic, and coated metal can be engraved, while bare metal is outside the R1’s territory. Treat these as review-reported capabilities, not a substitute for checking a current materials chart and the relevant material’s safety requirements.

How the work area and lenses affect a project
Standard bed or Conveyor
The standard 600 × 300 mm work area is suited to pieces that fit within that footprint. The optional Conveyor is reported to extend the processing area to 600 × 3,000 mm, a more relevant configuration for longer work. That added length is useful only if the project needs it and the room can accommodate the machine and the material-handling workflow.

Short-focus or optional lens
The supplied short-focus lens is reported to produce a 0.11 mm spot and cut black walnut plywood up to 15 mm. The review attributes an 18 mm maximum in that material to optional medium- or long-focus lenses. These are stated capability figures, not a promise that every material, design, or setup will cut cleanly at those thicknesses.

Price, accessories, and the real configuration
McNally’s review reported a UK starting price of £2,249, including the short-focus lens. That is a review-era regional figure, not a verified current listing; price, bundles, stock, and accessory availability may differ.
The reviewer names a Riser Base, Conveyor, Rotary Attachment, Vision Encoder, alternative lenses, E1 Pro Air Purifier, and automatic fire-extinguishing system as optional accessories. The review does not establish their current prices or availability. Rather than treating every add-on as necessary, match the configuration to the jobs you intend to do:

- Compatible with Bambu lab A1 series, P1 series and X1 series 3D printers
- Essential Filament Management: Designed to reliably cut filament and prevent jams in your Bamboo Lab 3D printer, ensuring smooth operation and uninterrupted printing
- Address Cutting Issues: Replace this blade if experiencing filament cutting problems, AMS retraction failures, or when the blade becomes dull through regular use (typically after 5,000-7,000 cuts)
- Proactive Maintenance Recommended: Maintain optimal cutting performance by replacing the cutter every 10-15 spools of filament used; a sharp blade ensures clean cuts and prevents operational issues
- Installation support: For detailed installation steps, please scan the QR code on the box, enter the Bambu Lab Wiki and search for "filament cutter replacement"; if you need further help, please contact customer service
- Consider the Conveyor if your planned pieces exceed the standard bed length, and account for the extra room the workflow needs.
- Consider an alternative lens only if the material thickness or cutting work justifies it; the review describes the supplied lens as suited to fine detail and cites thicker cutting with optional lenses.
- Assess the Vision Encoder against a real need for the higher motion-accuracy figure reported with that accessory.
- Include extraction and other required safety provisions in the total setup cost, rather than budgeting for the machine alone.
Software and day-to-day workflow
The review describes a workflow built around photographed material, dual-camera positioning, automatic laser alignment, and automatic focus. That can help place artwork where it belongs and revise a digital design without starting the whole project over. The R1 also supports Wi-Fi and USB and uses Bambu Suite.
McNally’s assessment is positive overall but says Bambu Suite needs to mature, with gaps in presets and workflow polish. For a buyer who needs a highly flexible or refined software process, that is an important qualification: the hardware’s automation does not remove the need to learn and check the software workflow.

Workspace and laser safety are part of the purchase
A laser cutter is not a printer to leave running unattended. The review describes smoke, particles, and fire risk, and says the machine requires extraction hardware; it also names the optional E1 Pro Air Purifier. Before buying, confirm the current manual’s requirements for ventilation, materials, supervision, and installation in your location.
The review describes the standard enclosed configuration as Class 1, with lid-open protection, flame detection, and an emergency stop. It says opening the enclosure with certain accessories changes the configuration to Class 4 and requires appropriate CO₂-laser eye protection and greater precautions. These are the review’s descriptions, not standalone safety instructions. Verify the classification and required controls for the exact configuration you plan to use against Bambu Lab’s current official safety documentation. The review also warns against processing vinyl; consult the manufacturer’s current materials guidance rather than assuming a material is safe because it can be cut.
Verdict: a serious maker-space tool, not a casual engraver
The R1’s strongest case is for a maker with repeatable fabrication needs—such as panels, cutouts, signs, or layered project parts—who has the room, extraction, and budget to run a CO₂ laser safely. Its reported work area, camera-assisted positioning, and cutting capabilities make the cockpit example persuasive. The counterweight is a costly base machine whose final configuration can grow with accessories, plus a software experience the reviewer says still needs refinement.

For an occasional engraving hobby, the R1 is difficult to justify on the evidence in this review. For a well-equipped home workshop where cutting capability unlocks projects that would otherwise be impractical, it could be the centerpiece the room needs. McNally’s review is the basis for these product and safety descriptions; confirm current specifications, price, accessories, and safety requirements before committing.
