SEO remains a foundation for visibility as search adds AI-generated answers and more searches end without a visit to a website. For 2027 planning, focus on three things: make important pages crawlable and eligible to appear in Search, publish original material that genuinely helps a defined audience, and measure visibility alongside visits and business outcomes. No tactic can guarantee rankings or inclusion in an AI answer.
Is SEO still relevant as search adds AI answers?
Yes. Google says its AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on its Search index and foundational Search systems. A page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a Search snippet to qualify as a supporting link in those features. That is an eligibility condition, not a promise that Google will crawl, index, rank, or show the page.

Google’s May 2026 guidance treats optimization for generative Search as part of SEO: continue established practices rather than chasing supposed AI-specific ranking hacks. Google says no additional technical requirements or special schema are needed for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Google’s guidance on AI features in Search explains eligibility and reporting, while its Search Essentials sets out baseline technical and policy requirements.

What does zero-click search mean for visibility?
A zero-click search is one that ends without the user clicking through to a website. That behavior makes clicks an incomplete measure of how often people encounter a brand or answer in search, but a zero-click estimate does not show that SEO has stopped creating value.
Clickstream studies offer useful signals, not a census or directly comparable trend line. SparkToro’s 2024 study, using clickstream panel data provided by Datos, estimated that 58.5% of U.S. Google searches and 59.7% of EU Google searches ended without a click. SparkToro’s 2026 estimate, based on Similarweb clickstream data, put the U.S. figure at 68% for January through April 2026. The panels and methods differ, so the figures should not be spliced into a precise year-over-year increase. See SparkToro’s 2024 study and its 2026 study for their respective scopes.

Other studies also need their own context. Semrush examined more than 200,000 keywords from January through October 2025 and found higher zero-click rates among keywords that triggered AI Overviews. Semrush cautioned that informational intent may help explain the association, so it does not establish that AI Overviews caused the difference; its study also reported a decline in the rate during its observation window. Semrush’s analysis describes its findings and caveats. Ahrefs estimated a 34.5% click reduction associated with AI summaries in its 2025 research; that is an Ahrefs estimate, not a universal effect for every query or site. Ahrefs’ study provides its own methodology and scope.

What should SEO teams prioritize for 2027?
1. Keep important pages discoverable and eligible
Check that key URLs can be crawled, return successfully, expose indexable text, and connect to relevant pages through useful internal links. Use Search Console and URL Inspection to diagnose crawling, indexing, and Search visibility issues. Google’s AI features guidance and Search Essentials are the appropriate reference points; a technical checklist cannot guarantee inclusion in an AI feature.

2. Make original usefulness the editorial standard
Build pages around a real audience need, with original expertise, useful analysis, and firsthand evidence when available. Be clear about what you know and do not claim tests or experience you have not conducted. Google permits AI assistance for research or structure, but warns that producing many pages without adding value may violate its scaled content abuse policy. Its guidance on generative AI content explains the distinction.
Google Search Relations’ John Mueller put the priority plainly in a May 21, 2025 post: “Focus on your visitors and provide them with unique, satisfying content.” Read the Google Search Central post.
3. Make pages clear to readers and search systems
Use descriptive titles and headings, readable text, and internal links that help visitors understand where to go next. Add images or video when they contribute useful information, not as decoration for an algorithm. If you use structured data, it should accurately describe visible page content and follow Google’s guidelines. Google says special schema and new machine-readable files are not required for AI Overviews or AI Mode; its AI Search guidance also cautions against unnecessary AI text files, artificial content “chunking,” and inauthentic mentions presented as optimization tactics.

Labels such as “answer engine optimization” and “generative engine optimization” do not, by themselves, establish that a tactic works. Google’s AI features guidance treats these experiences as part of Search optimization, and its third-party advice page warns that outside claims can misrepresent Google’s guidance or ranking systems. Before adopting a tactic, check it against official documentation and a measurable user or business need.

5. Diversify discovery based on audience evidence
Changing search behavior is a reason to understand how your audience finds and evaluates information, not to assume that one alternative channel will replace Search. Use first-party analytics and customer research to identify relevant discovery channels and decide where investment makes sense. When citing external clickstream research, state its publisher, year, geography, panel, and method so readers can judge what it does and does not establish.

Separate exposure from outcomes. Search impressions and clicks can show whether a page is appearing and attracting visits; they do not, on their own, show whether those visits matter to the organization.
Google says links from AI features are included in Search Console performance reporting. As of August 31, 2026, Google had completed the worldwide rollout of dedicated Search Generative AI performance reports. Pair Search visibility data with the outcomes that fit your site, such as qualified visits, engagement, subscriptions, signups, sales, or successful information lookups. The Google Search Central announcement describes the report rollout.

- Visibility: Track impressions and clicks in Search Console, including generative AI reporting where available in your account.
- Visit quality: Use your analytics and product data to assess engagement and whether visitors complete relevant tasks.
- Business impact: Connect organic discovery to outcomes such as leads, sales, subscriptions, or other goals your organization has defined.
Google has said that clicks from AI Overview results have been higher quality in its observations, but it has not published a universal uplift figure in the cited guidance. Treat that as a qualitative observation, not a forecast for your site. A rise in impressions, a mention in an answer, or a click is not a substitute for evidence about your own audience and outcomes.
