The Philips Baristina makes fresh-bean espresso with little technique: it grinds, tamps and brews after you swipe its portafilter handle. You still have to empty and rinse the portafilter, and you cannot adjust the grind or steam milk on the base model. Reviewers disagree on how good the coffee tastes, so it is best understood as a convenience-first machine—not a shortcut to barista-style control.
How the Philips Baristina works
Philips describes the process as, “Just swipe the handle. Baristina automatically grinds, tamps and brews your coffee.” In practice, you fill the hopper with whole beans and the water tank, slide the portafilter into the grinding position, choose espresso or lungo, and optionally select an intensity boost. The machine then moves the handle beneath the brew group and makes the drink. The U.S. BAR301/00R0 product page lists a 16-bar pump. Philips’ product page

Automation stops short of cleanup: you remove the portafilter, knock out the coffee puck and rinse the basket. TechRadar describes the basket as pressurized, integrated into the handle and non-removable. Grind size is fixed, so you cannot dial in extraction as you would with a more hands-on espresso setup. What the coffee tastes like depends on the beans—and the reviewer
There is no clear consensus in the hands-on reviews. TechRadar’s tester reported consistently well-extracted coffee with their usual freshly roasted beans and a thick crema, while noting that the fixed grind is the main limitation: if extraction is off, changing beans is one of the few adjustments available. - FRESH IS BEST: Freshly ground beans give you the greatest coffee aroma.
- TAKE YOUR BEST SHOT: Espresso. Lungo. Extra intense. Your call.
Tom’s Guide’s Erin Bashford was less impressed. In her tests with artisan Ethiopian beans and a generic dark roast, she found the espresso average; she favored cheaper, darker beans for this machine and criticized its small pressurized basket and limited milk-texture options. That is her test result, not a universal verdict on every bean or palate. Tom’s Guide’s review
Ideal Home Digital Editor Rebecca Knight tested the machine for two months in London with Kiss the Hippo George Street Blend and unfiltered water. She reported smooth espresso and lungo with crema, and five coffees that were consistently good. Those results describe her setup and use, rather than guaranteeing the same outcome with other beans or water. Ideal Home’s review

Drinks, milk and control: what you can and cannot change
The reviewed machine has two drink buttons: espresso and lungo. It also offers an intensity boost and programmable drink volume, as reported by Ideal Home. There is no grind-size adjustment, and the base model has no steam wand or built-in milk-frothing system. Philips sells a frother bundle in some markets, so check the exact model and included accessories where you live. Ideal Home’s review TechRadar’s review
That makes the Baristina a better fit for straight espresso and lungo than for experimenting with extraction or making textured-milk drinks. If latte-art microfoam and hands-on dialing-in are priorities, a manual machine with a separate grinder offers more room to adjust. TechRadar names the De’Longhi Dedica Duo as one alternative for people willing to take that more involved approach. TechRadar’s review

Speed, size and everyday cleanup
Ideal Home measured less than 60 seconds from grind to brew once the machine was warm, and observed five drinks made in six minutes. Both are results from that reviewer’s test, not a guaranteed serving time for every routine. The reservoir holds 1.2 liters (47 ounces), according to TechRadar’s specifications. Ideal Home lists a 72 dB noise level and measured a 78.9 dB peak while grinding. The listing and measurement belong to that review, not a universal Philips noise specification. Ideal Home’s review

The main daily chore is the used puck: remove the portafilter, empty it and rinse the basket. The basket’s integration into the handle means it is not a removable component you can swap for a different style of basket, according to TechRadar. TechRadar’s review
Is the Philips Baristina right for me?
- Consider it if you are moving on from capsules and want to use whole beans without taking on a traditional espresso workflow, or if speed and a compact routine matter more than adjusting every shot.
- Look elsewhere if you want adjustable grind and extraction, an unpressurized basket, hands-on espresso practice, or built-in milk steaming.
- Check your exact bundle if milk drinks matter; a frother is sold with some configurations, but the base model does not include a built-in milk system.
For another practical reference, Philips’ U.S. product page showed 4.1 out of 5 from 113 customer reviews when accessed on October 7, 2026. That customer rating and review count can change and are not a controlled test. Philips’ product page
