SEO Before Launch: What Developers Should Check on a New Website

SEO belongs in development: verify that search engines can discover and understand priority pages, and remove launch-time indexing mistakes without expecting guaranteed rankings.

Developers should account for SEO before launch because architecture, URLs, rendered content, links, and indexing controls determine whether search engines can find and understand a site. That makes SEO part of technical readiness—not a promise of rankings. Google explains that Search moves through crawling, indexing, and serving, and says it does not guarantee that a page will be crawled, indexed, or served even if it follows its guidance. Google Search Central explains how Search works.

What does SEO have to do with development?

Search visibility depends in part on implementation choices made while a site is being built. A page must be discoverable, accessible to a crawler, and understandable enough to be considered for indexing. Developers influence those conditions through navigation, routing, JavaScript rendering, HTTP responses, canonical signals, and robots directives.

Google’s process has three broad stages: it discovers URLs, crawls pages, then indexes and serves content when appropriate. A page can be missed or excluded at any stage; launch readiness improves the conditions for discovery and indexing but cannot guarantee search traffic or a particular position.

What technical SEO checks should you perform before launching?

Make important pages reachable through links

Check that every important page can be reached from another discoverable page using a standard link, such as <a href="/services/">Services</a>. Do not rely only on buttons, event handlers, or script-driven interactions for discovery. A sitemap can also help Google learn about URLs, but it complements rather than replaces internal links. Google’s developer guide covers crawlable links and discoverability.

Check what JavaScript-rendered pages expose

Google can render JavaScript, but test representative pages to confirm that essential text, links, and images appear after rendering. Give each distinct page or meaningful application screen its own URL; do not make a URL fragment the only way to identify different content. Verify that the rendered version contains the information users and crawlers need, rather than assuming the initial HTML tells the full story.

Remove accidental access and indexing blocks

Review robots.txt, meta robots directives, and HTTP authentication in both staging and production. A public page intended for search should not remain behind a login, carry an accidental noindex, or be blocked from crawling by a staging rule.

These controls are not interchangeable. robots.txt can prevent crawling, while a crawler needs access to a page to see its noindex directive. If a page must stay out of public Search, allow crawling and use noindex, or restrict access with authentication. Google states that “A robots.txt is not a mechanism for keeping a web page out of Google.” See the developer guide for the distinction.

Verify response status and indexable content

Confirm that intended public pages return HTTP 200 and provide meaningful, accessible content. A page returning an error or requiring access a crawler cannot obtain cannot serve its intended content in search results. Check important templates as well as individual high-priority URLs; a shared routing or deployment issue can affect many pages at once.

Make URL and canonical signals consistent

Choose stable, descriptive URLs that make sense to the audience. Use consistent casing, hyphens between words where appropriate, and avoid unnecessary query parameters. Check that HTTP and HTTPS versions, hostnames, trailing slashes, redirects, sitemap URLs, and rel="canonical" annotations point consistently toward the preferred version. Canonical annotations are signals rather than commands: Google selects a canonical based on the signals it finds and what it considers useful. See Google’s URL structure guidance and canonicalization documentation.

Publish a sitemap of intended URLs

Generate a valid sitemap containing absolute URLs for pages you want considered for Search. Publish it at the site root when practical, and submit it in Search Console if useful. Keep internal links in place: sitemap submission is a discovery hint, not a guarantee of crawling, indexing, or ranking. Google’s sitemap documentation specifies a maximum of 50 MB uncompressed or 50,000 URLs per sitemap file; split larger sets and use a sitemap index if needed. See Google’s sitemap guidance and its crawling and indexing FAQ.

Check performance and plan to monitor

Use PageSpeed Insights to diagnose an individual page and review the Core Web Vitals report in Search Console for site-wide field information. These tools can reveal performance and user-experience issues; neither a particular score nor passing a diagnostic guarantees a search position. After launch, monitor indexing reports and investigate real errors rather than treating a perfect lab score as the goal. Google’s SEO maintenance guidance describes ongoing monitoring.

How do you validate the site before and after launch?

  1. Before launch: Crawl or review representative routes and confirm that priority pages have stable, distinct URLs, crawlable links, rendered content, and expected HTTP 200 responses.
  2. Check staging controls: Review robots directives, authentication, and any site-wide noindex settings. Record which controls are intentional, then verify that public production pages will not inherit them by mistake.
  3. Check URL signals: Compare redirects, canonical annotations, and sitemap entries for the preferred HTTPS, hostname, path casing, and trailing-slash format.
  4. At launch: Confirm that production is accessible to crawlers, publish the sitemap, and use Search Console’s URL Inspection tool and indexing reports to check important pages. The exact report status is diagnostic, not a promise of inclusion.
  5. After launch: Monitor indexing and site-wide performance information, investigate errors, and test affected URLs after fixes. Google does not predict when or whether a URL will be crawled or indexed, so do not promise immediate visibility.

For Google’s general technical requirements, see the technical requirements documentation. Search Console URL Inspection and indexing reports are described in the developer guide.
