The MOMENTUM 4 Wireless was Sennheiser’s 2022 answer to a four-year gap between over-ear Momentum generations. It brought adaptive noise cancellation, Transparency Mode and sound-personalization features, but those launch claims alone cannot prove it was “worth the wait.” Sennheiser now lists the MOMENTUM 5 Wireless as its successor, so the useful answer today is both historical and practical: the MOMENTUM 4 marked a feature-focused return, while current buyers should compare it with the newer model and their local prices.
What did Sennheiser announce in 2022?
Sennheiser announced the MOMENTUM 4 Wireless on August 9, 2022, and said it would go on sale globally on August 23. The European launch MSRP was €349.90, a historical price rather than a guide to what the headphones cost now. Sennheiser’s launch announcement positioned the model around adaptive noise cancellation, comfort, Transparency Mode, EQ and sound personalization.

Those are manufacturer descriptions, not independent measurements of sound, noise cancellation or comfort. The launch’s “worth the wait” case was therefore a feature proposition: listeners could tune playback, hear their surroundings through Transparency Mode and use noise cancellation. Whether those features worked especially well in practice is a separate question that specifications cannot settle.
What is different about the current successor?
Sennheiser’s current MOMENTUM 5 Wireless page lists a 42 mm dynamic driver, hybrid adaptive active noise cancellation, Bluetooth 5.4, Dolby Atmos and Transparency Mode. It also claims up to 57 hours of Bluetooth music playback with ANC enabled, based on testing with an iPhone at mid volume. That is a manufacturer-stated maximum under a specific condition, not a guarantee of runtime for every phone, volume or listening pattern. See Sennheiser’s MOMENTUM 5 specifications.

Does an exchangeable MOMENTUM 5 battery mean you can replace it yourself?
Sennheiser describes the MOMENTUM 5’s 700 mAh battery as exchangeable. That establishes the manufacturer’s battery description, but not the availability or compatibility of a replacement part, its repair cost, or whether replacement is a straightforward do-it-yourself job. Confirm those details with Sennheiser or an authorized service provider before buying on the assumption that a battery repair will be easy.

So, were the MOMENTUM 4 headphones worth the wait?
As a product announcement, the MOMENTUM 4 represented a substantial feature-focused update after the long gap: Sennheiser highlighted adaptive ANC, comfort, Transparency Mode, EQ and sound personalization. But “worth the wait” is a judgment about how those features perform and what the headphones cost, not a conclusion established by the launch announcement. The arrival of the MOMENTUM 5 also changes the present-day question: compare both generations at the prices and with the warranty available where you live, and rely on independent listening and comfort tests for the qualities the specifications cannot prove.
