Neither checkout type is always faster, and the available evidence does not establish a reliability winner. A one-store study in Poland found longer average transactions at self-checkout, while Target later reported that total checkout transaction times improved after it introduced express self-checkout and changed how shoppers used its lanes. Those findings measure different things. For your trip, compare the actual queue, your basket and the likelihood you will need help.
Which checkout is faster?
It depends on what “faster” includes. Your total checkout time combines waiting in line with scanning, bagging, payment and any interruption that requires staff assistance. A short self-checkout queue may look quick, but a slow scan or delayed intervention can change the result; a staffed lane may move a larger basket more smoothly, but its queue may be longer.

What a direct comparison found
A 2020 study by Jin Kyung Kwak analyzed checkout data from one retail store in Poland. Average self-checkout transactions took longer than staffed transactions even though customers at self-checkout bought fewer items. The study reported significantly longer per-item scanning time and a longer fixed checkout component at self-checkout, with transaction duration increasing as item count rose. The abstract does not report the sample size or effect sizes, and a single store cannot establish how every retailer performs. Read the study abstract.

Target said it introduced self-checkout limited to 10 items or fewer at most of its nearly 2,000 US stores in March 2024. In a May 5, 2025 update, the retailer reported nearly 8% improvement in total transaction times across both self-checkout and traditional staffed lanes after the change. It also reported a five-point improvement in checkout wait-time NPS and a three-point improvement in interaction, and said a greater share of guests were using staffed lanes. These are Target’s own before-and-after operational results; they do not isolate which lane type became faster or establish that the change caused the improvement. See Target’s update.

What shoppers mean when they say self-checkout is faster
In a survey commissioned by NCR Voyix, 77% of US shoppers who preferred self-checkout said speed was a reason; 36% cited shorter lines and 43% preferred bagging their own items. The blind online survey included 1,044 American consumers in November 2024 and reported a margin of error of plus or minus 3%. These are stated preferences, not stopwatch comparisons of equivalent shopping trips. Read NCR Voyix’s report.
Which checkout is more reliable?
“Reliable” can mean avoiding scanning or payment errors, completing checkout without an intervention, or getting help quickly when something goes wrong. The sources available document self-checkout errors but do not provide equivalent failure rates for staffed lanes, so they cannot show which type is more reliable overall.

A University of Leicester summary of the ECR Retail Loss Self-Checkout Loss Report 2026 describes several self-checkout problems: missed scans, product look-up errors, awkward items, difficult barcodes and unfamiliar interfaces. The study involved 39 retailers with combined annual turnover of €1 trillion, according to the university. Its summary reports missed scans in 1% to 4.8% of self-checkout transactions and product look-up errors in 0.18% to 0.2%. These figures describe self-checkout, not a comparison with staffed lanes. The summary also notes that retailers struggle to tell whether non-scans are deliberate or accidental. Read the University of Leicester summary.

The same summary reports that prompts to check or rescan items led customers to self-correct in more than 80% of cases. It also describes retailer-reported results for particular interventions: one retailer had 28% fewer walkaways after installing exit gates; personal display monitors reduced losses by 12%; and missed-scan identification technology reduced losses by 9%. These are specific findings about interventions, not evidence that every store offers them or that self-checkout outperforms staffed checkout.

How to choose a lane for your basket
Use the conditions in front of you rather than assuming one lane type is always best. These practical suggestions apply the findings above; they are not measured rules for every store.
- Small, straightforward basket and a short queue: Self-checkout may be convenient if items scan easily and you are comfortable bagging them.
- Large basket: Consider a staffed lane, particularly if scanning and bagging many items yourself would take time.
- Produce, awkward items or hard-to-scan barcodes: A staffed lane may avoid repeated look-ups or the need to request assistance.
- Age check, payment issue or another likely intervention: Prefer a lane where staff can help readily, or check whether an attendant is available near self-checkout.
- You value doing the scanning and bagging yourself: Self-checkout may suit your preference even when it is not demonstrably quicker.
Queue length matters for both options. A nearly empty staffed lane can beat a busy self-checkout area; a short self-checkout queue can be attractive when the staffed lanes are backed up. If an attendant is occupied helping another customer, that wait is part of your total checkout time too.

What the evidence does—and does not—settle
The speed evidence spans different settings and measures: a direct comparison from one Polish store in 2020, Target’s retailer-reported change across both lane types in the United States, and a US survey of shopper preferences. The reliability evidence documents self-checkout errors but does not supply a comparable staffed-lane denominator. A 2021 study based on a UK field survey of 313 shoppers and an Australian online panel of 474 found that perceived staffed-checkout quality had a stronger positive impact on overall store quality, satisfaction and loyalty than perceived self-checkout quality; those are perception outcomes, not speed or technical-reliability tests. Read the 2021 study abstract.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsResults may vary with store layout, staffing, queue volume, basket size, payment or age-check needs, and machine design. The evidence supports a conditional choice—not a universal ranking of self-checkout and staffed checkout.
