Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo use Selenium WebDriver for cross-browser testing, write a test around a user-visible workflow, run it locally in one browser, then run the same test with browser-specific options across the browsers and operating systems your product supports. Selenium WebDriver is Selenium’s browser-control interface; browser-specific driver implementations connect it to browsers. For remote machines and parallel sessions, Selenium Grid routes WebDriver commands to browser instances, which clients address with RemoteWebDriver.
This tutorial uses Python for runnable examples. The setup pattern is the same in other bindings, but installation commands and APIs are language-specific. Selenium describes WebDriver as driving a browser natively and identifies it as a W3C Recommendation: Selenium WebDriver documentation.
Choose a cross-browser test matrix before setting up infrastructure
Start with the environments your users rely on and your product claims to support. Cross-browser testing does not mean testing every possible browser, version, and operating-system combination. Choose a small, explicit matrix, then expand it when product support, user impact, or observed defects justify the extra coverage.
| Dimension | What to decide |
|---|---|
| Browser family | Which supported browsers matter to your users, such as Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari. |
| Browser version | Which version or version range you intend to validate. Record the version used for each run. |
| Operating system | Which desktop platforms are relevant to your support commitments and user base. |
| Capabilities | Any browser-specific behavior needed by the feature, such as options, permissions, or device emulation. |
Keep the workflow and assertions comparable across matrix entries: a test should express the same user intent even if browser setup differs. When a result diverges, capture the browser family, version, operating system, and relevant capabilities with the failure. Selenium’s Grid documentation describes browser types, versions, operating systems, and machines as dimensions for distributed testing: Selenium Grid.

Set up a local Python WebDriver session
A local session needs a Selenium language binding, an installed browser, and a matching browser-driver implementation or supported driver-management setup. Selenium’s setup guidance documents browser-specific drivers and Selenium Manager; the Selenium project overview says Selenium Manager is the default management route in current bindings. Follow the current Python setup instructions rather than relying on old, hard-coded driver-download steps: Selenium Manager and WebDriver getting started.
- Install Python and Selenium. In a project virtual environment, run
python -m pip install selenium. - Install the browser you want to test. For example, install Chrome for the Chrome example below. Selenium Manager may manage driver setup, but it does not remove the need to choose and install the target browser.
- Save the test as
test_webdriver.py. The example starts Chrome, navigates to a page, waits for an observable condition, checks the outcome, and closes the session even if an assertion fails. - Run it with
python test_webdriver.py. If browser or driver startup fails, use the troubleshooting section to check the browser installation and compatibility.
from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
from selenium.webdriver.support import expected_conditions as EC
from selenium.webdriver.support.ui import WebDriverWait
def test_title_and_content():
options = webdriver.ChromeOptions()
driver = webdriver.Chrome(options=options)
try:
driver.get("https://www.selenium.dev/")
wait = WebDriverWait(driver, 10)
wait.until(EC.visibility_of_element_located((By.TAG_NAME, "body")))
assert "Selenium" in driver.title
assert driver.find_element(By.TAG_NAME, "body").text.strip()
finally:
driver.quit()
if __name__ == "__main__":
test_title_and_content()
print("Test passed")
The page and assertions above are a minimal demonstration, not a test of your application. Replace the URL and checks with stable outcomes that matter to the user workflow you need to validate.
Build reliable tests around observable behavior
Start and close sessions predictably
Construct the browser’s options, create the driver session, navigate, exercise the page, assert observable results, and always call quit() to close the session. Use a try/finally block or your test framework’s cleanup fixture so a failed assertion does not leave a browser process running.
Wait for a condition, not an arbitrary delay
Pages and applications load asynchronously. Prefer explicit waits for the state your test needs, such as an element becoming visible or a result appearing. A fixed sleep can be too short on a slow run and unnecessarily long on a fast one; it does not establish that the required state is ready. Selenium’s wait guidance is available in the WebDriver documentation.

Keep locators and assertions meaningful
Use selectors that identify the relevant interface element reliably, and assert outcomes the user can observe: a confirmation message, a changed status, or a destination page. Avoid making the test depend on incidental layout details unless layout itself is what you are testing.
Run the same workflow in multiple browsers
Parameterize browser selection while keeping the test’s purpose and assertions stable. Selenium provides browser-specific documentation for Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Safari; the available setup and capabilities are not identical across them. Use the appropriate options class at the setup edge of the test, and consult the relevant browser page when configuring or diagnosing a session: Selenium browser documentation.
For a simple local experiment, select a browser by an environment variable and create its driver accordingly:
import os
from selenium import webdriver
browser = os.environ.get("BROWSER", "chrome").lower()
if browser == "chrome":
options = webdriver.ChromeOptions()
driver = webdriver.Chrome(options=options)
elif browser == "firefox":
options = webdriver.FirefoxOptions()
driver = webdriver.Firefox(options=options)
elif browser == "edge":
options = webdriver.EdgeOptions()
driver = webdriver.Edge(options=options)
else:
raise ValueError(f"Unsupported browser: {browser}")
try:
driver.get("https://www.selenium.dev/")
print(driver.title)
finally:
driver.quit()
Run the script with BROWSER=chrome python run_browser.py, BROWSER=firefox python run_browser.py, or BROWSER=edge python run_browser.py in shells that use this environment-variable syntax. Each selected browser must be installed and usable on that machine. Treat this as a starting point for a test runner, not a complete matrix scheduler.

Compatibility rules can change with browser releases. Selenium’s Chrome documentation specifically says Chrome and ChromeDriver major versions must match. Recheck the current browser-specific instructions when maintaining a setup, especially after browser updates: Selenium Chrome documentation.
When to use Selenium Grid and RemoteWebDriver
Use local sessions while developing and debugging a test. Consider Grid when you need remote machines, different operating systems or browser versions, or parallel sessions to reduce the time spent waiting for a matrix to finish. Grid routes commands from a client to browser instances. Selenium’s getting-started documentation describes Standalone as a single-machine starting point and Hub/Node as a way to combine machines with different systems or browser versions: Grid getting started.
Connect a Python test to a Grid endpoint
A remote session needs the Grid URL and an options instance that names the requested browser. The example below reads the endpoint from an environment variable so it can be set to your Grid deployment’s address:
import os
from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
from selenium.webdriver.support import expected_conditions as EC
from selenium.webdriver.support.ui import WebDriverWait
grid_url = os.environ["SELENIUM_GRID_URL"]
options = webdriver.ChromeOptions()
driver = webdriver.Remote(
command_executor=grid_url,
options=options,
)
try:
driver.get("https://www.selenium.dev/")
WebDriverWait(driver, 10).until(
EC.visibility_of_element_located((By.TAG_NAME, "body"))
)
assert "Selenium" in driver.title
finally:
driver.quit()
Set SELENIUM_GRID_URL to the endpoint exposed by your Grid, for example http://grid-host:4444 if that is the endpoint configured in your environment. The exact URL and available browser capabilities depend on the deployment; the Grid must have a node able to satisfy the requested options. Selenium documents RemoteWebDriver and the requirement to provide browser options at Remote WebDriver.

Size and secure the Grid for your environment
Grid capacity depends on machine resources, browser workload, and the concurrency you request. Start with a modest number of sessions, measure actual runtime and resource use, then adjust nodes and concurrency. Selenium’s capacity examples are illustrative calculations, not a promise that a particular node count will achieve a given speedup: Grid applicability.
Do not expose a Grid endpoint indiscriminately to the public internet. Selenium’s Grid getting-started guidance warns against external exposure; restrict network access to trusted clients and operate the endpoint according to your organization’s security requirements.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose local runs, Grid, or hosted execution
| Approach | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Local WebDriver | Developing tests and reproducing failures on a browser installed on your machine. | Coverage is limited to the browsers and systems available locally. |
| Selenium Grid | Running against remote browser instances, multiple machines or platforms, and parallel sessions. | You operate and size the Grid; capacity varies with the machines and workload. |
| Hosted browser execution | When you need remote environments without operating all browser machines yourself. | Compare current browser/OS coverage, security controls, maintenance effort, and commercial terms directly with the provider; those details are not established here. |
Make the choice using four questions: which browser/version and operating-system combinations are required, whether parallelism materially helps turnaround, how much infrastructure maintenance your team can own, and what control or security constraints apply to test environments.
Troubleshoot common WebDriver failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Browser does not start or the driver cannot be created | The browser is missing, its driver setup failed, or a version compatibility requirement is not met. | Confirm the target browser is installed, read the current Selenium setup and browser-specific documentation, and review Selenium Manager output. For Chrome, confirm Chrome and ChromeDriver major versions match. |
| A test passes in one browser but fails in another | The browser may behave differently, a capability may be missing, or the test may depend on timing or browser-specific setup. | Reproduce with the exact browser/version and OS, record capabilities, and inspect the failing observable condition before changing assertions. |
| Element lookup or assertion fails intermittently | The page state may not be ready when the test queries it. | Wait explicitly for the element or state the assertion depends on. Avoid increasing arbitrary sleeps as a general fix. |
| Remote session cannot be created | The client may be using the wrong Grid endpoint, or Grid may not have a node matching the requested browser options. | Verify the Grid URL is reachable from the test client, confirm the requested browser is available in Grid, and pass the correct options instance. |
| Grid becomes slow or sessions fail under load | Requested concurrency may exceed available CPU, memory, or browser capacity. | Reduce concurrency, observe resource use, and add capacity based on measurements from the actual environment. |
| Grid is reachable from unintended networks | The endpoint may be exposed without sufficient network restriction. | Restrict access to trusted clients and follow Selenium’s Grid security guidance before running it beyond a controlled environment. |
