To test a WooCommerce store, use a staging copy for payment tests and consequential updates, run a realistic customer checkout with the payment gateway in test mode, then inspect orders, emails, integrations, and scheduled actions. Before updating, make a current backup of both the database and wp-content. WooCommerce’s guidance is explicit: “Important: To avoid unintended complications with test payments on your live site, perform testing exclusively on a staging site.”
How do I test my WooCommerce store without disrupting live orders?
Work through the same path a shopper takes, but do it on a separate staging site wherever payment testing or a consequential update is involved. Test payments are operational events: they may send normal emails, appear in analytics, and reach extensions or external services that do not know they are tests.
- Create a staging copy. Use your host’s staging feature or restore a backup to a separate WordPress installation. Restrict access if appropriate, and check whether the copy is still connected to live payment credentials, email delivery, shipping services, or other integrations.
- Back up before updating. WooCommerce identifies both the database and
wp-contentas parts of the store data. The folder contains themes, extensions, and uploads; the database contains products, orders, posts, pages, and settings. Make sure the backup covers both. - Write down the store-specific checks. Include the products, shipping methods, taxes, payment methods, emails, and extensions customers actually use.
- Run test transactions in the gateway’s test mode. Do not use live customer cards or place real orders with the intention of refunding them.
- Inspect the customer experience and the back end. Verify the confirmation page, order record, transaction details, messages, and integration behavior.
- Remove test orders when finished. This helps prevent accidental fulfillment and keeps analytics and order records from being confused by test activity.
WooCommerce’s update and testing instructions are in Testing orders and How to update WooCommerce.
What should I include in a WooCommerce test plan?
Start with one normal product and a typical customer journey, then add cases for the store’s actual configuration. A useful checklist is:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Product: title, price, variations, images, stock status, and any product-specific options display correctly.
- Cart: add, remove, and update quantities; confirm discounts, shipping estimates, tax, and totals are right.
- Checkout: required fields, address handling, validation, payment choices, and mobile layout behave as expected.
- Payment: a successful test payment completes; where the gateway supports it, also test a decline or other relevant failure and note what the shopper sees.
- Confirmation: the shopper reaches the order-received page and sees the expected details.
- Order handling: the order appears under WooCommerce > Orders with an appropriate status, and stock behavior matches the store’s configuration.
- Messages and connected services: check customer and store emails, shipping or fulfillment tools, accounting, marketing, and any other integrations the order can trigger.
A failed-payment scenario is not a universal WooCommerce requirement, but it is a practical way to learn how a particular gateway and store handle a customer’s unsuccessful attempt.
How do I place a test order in WooCommerce?
WooPayments test mode
For a connected WooPayments account, enable test mode in the store’s payment settings, then add a product to the cart and complete checkout with WooPayments’ current test card details. The documentation’s example for a US Visa test card is 4242 4242 4242 4242, with any future expiry date and any three-digit CVC. These are test credentials, not a real payment card; follow the current instructions for your account country and test scenario.
- Enable test mode in WooPayments settings.
- Visit the staging storefront as a shopper, add a product, and complete checkout using the provider’s test data.
- Confirm that the order-received page appears.
- Check WooCommerce > Orders for the order and Payments > Transactions for its transaction details.
WooPayments says test mode does not charge transaction fees. Its documentation also warns that a live transaction later refunded does not have its transaction fee refunded. See Testing WooPayments for current test data and instructions. The documentation notes that US generic test cards used with a non-US account country may show additional test fees, so check the regional guidance rather than assuming every test behaves identically.

WooPayments dedicated test account
WooPayments also documents a separate test-account option. It can run test transactions without requiring personal or business details, but it is not available to merchants in Singapore or the UAE according to the documentation, and the site must connect to WordPress.com. If a test account is upgraded to a live account, the test account is deleted. Existing test orders remain in WooCommerce Orders, but the old transaction data does not remain under Payments > Transactions. Check WooPayments: Test Accounts for current eligibility and transition details before choosing this route.
WooCommerce Stripe extension
Enable test mode in the Stripe payment settings for the WooCommerce extension, then use Stripe’s test card data and scenarios in checkout. Stripe’s extension documentation describes test cards for multiple outcomes; select cases that match what you need to verify, such as a successful payment or decline. A successful test should take the shopper to the same order-received page as a normal checkout. Open the order in the dashboard to inspect its linked charge details. Follow the current extension and Stripe instructions because payment settings and test options can change. See Testing the Stripe extension.
What should I inspect after a test order?
Check both what the shopper experiences and what the store records. A test order may look like an ordinary order: WooCommerce does not universally give test orders a special status or appearance. It may also trigger routine customer or store emails, show in analytics, or reach connected extensions and services that treat it as a real order.

- Verify the order’s status, items, totals, tax, shipping, and stock effects.
- Review gateway transaction details and order notes for a clear record of the outcome.
- Confirm which customer and administrator emails were sent and whether their content is correct.
- Check whether connected services received, processed, or counted the order.
- Delete the test order once the checks are complete, unless a specific record must be retained for your own test procedure.
If you need to suppress messages during staging tests, inspect how your mail setup works first. WooCommerce’s documentation mentions an email-disabling plugin but cautions that it may not stop messages sent through an SMTP provider. Disabling an integration during testing can reduce unintended side effects, but it also means that integration itself has not been tested.
How should I test a WooCommerce update?
Test the proposed update set on staging before applying it to production. Include WooCommerce, the theme, and extensions that are part of the planned change; record the versions so you can apply the same set to the live site after checks pass.
Recommended Free Tools
- Take a current backup covering the database and
wp-content. - Apply the intended updates on staging.
- Check the storefront and several product pages, then add a product to the cart.
- Complete an appropriate test order and verify the payment, shipping, tax, email, and extension behavior the store relies on.
- Review the WordPress and WooCommerce admin notices, failed scheduled actions, and extension alerts.
- When staging checks pass, deploy the same tested update set to production and recheck the affected storefront and checkout paths with an appropriate test payment method or a low-risk workflow.
If production behaves differently, investigate on staging before attempting another fix. If checkout is broken, keep it unavailable as appropriate while you assess the problem; restore from backup if necessary.

How do I troubleshoot a failed WooCommerce payment test?
Use the actual gateway response, order notes, and gateway logs to diagnose a failure. WooCommerce’s payment troubleshooting guidance lists several clues, but they are not definitive diagnoses:
- 400 error: the contact URL may be incorrect. Verify the gateway’s configured endpoint and the site URL.
- 200 error: credentials may be incorrect. Confirm that the keys belong to the intended test or live environment and were entered in the matching mode.
- Blank page: a PHP issue is one possible cause. Check server and WordPress logs, then reproduce on staging while isolating recent code or extension changes.
- Order-received page never appears: check gateway logs and WooCommerce order notes to see whether payment failed, the callback was not received, or checkout stopped earlier.
- Email or integration acted on a test order: inspect the receiving service’s test behavior and staging configuration; do not assume every connected service recognizes test mode.
WooCommerce recommends testing in a separate staging environment and using the gateway’s own test or sandbox mode. See Troubleshoot payment errors.
