Selenium Scrolling Screenshot Misses the Bottom: How to Fix It

When a Selenium screenshot stops at the viewport, choose a supported full-document method—or load scroll-triggered content and validate a scroll-and-stitch capture.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a Selenium screenshot cuts off the bottom of a page, first check which screenshot method you are calling. Ordinary WebDriver screenshots capture the current window or viewport; they are not necessarily full-document captures. Use a browser-specific full-page method where available, or WebDriver BiDi’s document-origin capture if your browser and driver support it. If content appears only after scrolling, load it before capture and consider capturing and stitching successive views.

Check whether your screenshot is a viewport or a full document

Selenium’s common screenshot methods save an image of the current window. That is different from capturing the entire scrollable document, so changing scroll position alone does not necessarily make a single screenshot include the whole page. Selenium’s API documentation describes the common WebDriver screenshot methods as current-window screenshots: Selenium common WebDriver API. Selenium’s windows-and-tabs guide also covers the current browsing context: Working with windows and tabs.

Identify the browser, Selenium language binding, browser and driver versions, and exact method in your script. Then choose a full-document capture supported by that combination, or use a scrolling strategy for content that must first be rendered.

Use Firefox’s full-document screenshot method with Selenium Python

The Firefox Python WebDriver API documents get_full_page_screenshot_as_file() and save_full_page_screenshot() as saving a full-document screenshot to a PNG file. Try the first method like this:

from selenium import webdriver

with webdriver.Firefox() as driver:
    driver.get("https://example.com")
    saved = driver.get_full_page_screenshot_as_file("/full/path/screenshot.png")
    if not saved:
        raise RuntimeError("Selenium did not report a successful screenshot save")

Use a full output path ending in .png and check the method’s boolean return value. The API describes save_full_page_screenshot() as an alternative full-document method; see the Selenium Firefox WebDriver API documentation for the current binding details. This is a Firefox Python solution, not a guarantee that the same method is available in every browser or language binding.

Use WebDriver BiDi document capture when supported

WebDriver BiDi’s browsingContext.captureScreenshot command supports an origin choice. The default is viewport; setting origin to document captures the scrollable document beyond the viewport. Check that the browser and driver in your session expose the command before relying on it. The command’s options are described in MDN’s WebDriver BiDi captureScreenshot reference.

Conceptually, the request needs the document origin rather than the default viewport origin:

This illustrates the command and the important option; it is not a complete Selenium client call. The exact way to enable BiDi and issue the command depends on your binding and driver. Confirm support in the documentation for the actual browser/driver combination and inspect the returned image rather than assuming that a session has enabled the feature.

Load scroll-triggered content before taking the screenshot

A full-document capture cannot include content that the page has not rendered yet. Lazy images, infinite-scroll results, and other scroll-triggered elements may appear only after the page is scrolled. In that case, scroll in measured increments, wait for the expected content to load, then capture successive views and stitch them together if necessary.

Scroll-and-stitch is a technique to implement and validate in your Selenium stack, not a universal Selenium full-page API. WebdriverIO describes scrolling screenshots as useful for lazy-loaded content and complex layouts; its documentation is a reference for the technique, not proof of native Selenium behavior: WebdriverIO method options.

Designed and made in Taiwan.
  1. Identify a measurable target, such as the expected final item or a page element whose presence indicates that more content has loaded.
  2. Scroll the relevant document or inner container by a controlled distance, leaving enough overlap between successive captures to avoid gaps.
  3. Wait for the target content or loading state to change before continuing. A fixed delay can be insufficient on slow or variable pages.
  4. Capture each segment and stitch the images, checking the result for overlap, missing strips, and duplicate content.
  5. Repeat until the intended final content is visible, and verify the resulting image against the page.

Fixed headers and sticky elements can appear in multiple segments; nested scroll containers may need to be scrolled instead of the document; and page height can change while content loads. These cases need page-specific handling. Do not assume that a generic scroll script or stitch will work without inspecting its output.

Choose the capture method that matches the page

Approach Best fit Checks and trade-offs
Firefox Python full-document API Firefox projects using Selenium Python Use the documented full-document method; check the Selenium API available to your installation, PNG path, and boolean return value.
WebDriver BiDi with document origin A browser, driver, and session that expose the BiDi screenshot command Request document, not the default viewport; verify support in your environment.
Manual scroll-and-stitch Pages that reveal content as the user scrolls or need controlled loading between segments Requires handling overlap, sticky elements, nested scrollers, and changing page height. Validate your Selenium implementation.
Ordinary WebDriver screenshot A current-window or viewport image It is not, by itself, a full-document capture method.

Diagnose content that is still missing

  • Check the scroll structure. In browser developer tools or your script, inspect document.documentElement.scrollHeight, the suspected element’s scrollHeight, and computed overflow styles. These are debugging clues for finding the page or element that actually scrolls, not a Selenium API guarantee.
  • Check lazy content. Compare the page before and after scrolling. If the missing elements do not exist or have not loaded before capture, scroll and wait for them rather than only changing the screenshot method.
  • Check horizontal overflow. Inspect whether the document or a container scrolls horizontally. A geckodriver issue opened July 4, 2019 recorded one case where horizontal overflow coincided with a full-page capture returning only the viewport. It is a historical report of one configuration, not evidence of a universal current Firefox limitation: geckodriver issue #1580.
  • Check the output itself. Compare the image dimensions and bottom edge with the page’s final visible content. Reproduce the issue on a minimal page where possible. Extremely tall pages and unusual layouts may expose capture limits or stitching problems; verify the result instead of inferring completeness from a successful save.

Common failures and practical fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to try
The image ends at the viewport boundary An ordinary current-window screenshot method was used. Switch to a browser-specific full-document API or BiDi document-origin capture where supported.
The bottom is captured, but lazy items are absent The page had not loaded those items before capture. Scroll the page or relevant container, wait for the items, and then capture; use validated segment stitching if needed.
The Firefox save call reports failure The output path may be invalid or the file could not be written. Use an existing writable directory and a full path ending in .png; check the boolean return value.
BiDi capture still shows only the viewport The command may have used its default origin, or the session may not support the feature. Set origin to document and confirm support in the browser and driver.
The stitched image has gaps or duplicated strips Scroll increments, overlap, page movement, or sticky elements were not accounted for. Use smaller measured scroll steps, wait for layout changes to settle, and inspect each segment’s overlap before stitching.
Only one section remains clipped The section may be inside a nested scroll container or horizontal overflow may affect the layout. Inspect the element’s scroll height and overflow behavior; target the actual scrolling container and validate the result.

Or skip the browser setup

Frequently Asked Questions

Does scrolling the page make Selenium’s ordinary screenshot full-page?

No. Scrolling changes what is visible in the current window; an ordinary screenshot still captures the current window rather than necessarily the entire document.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is scroll-and-stitch built into Selenium?

The documented scroll-and-stitch example here comes from WebdriverIO. A Selenium implementation needs to be built for your stack and checked against the page’s layout.
