Selenium Screenshot Is Blank After Switching to a New Window: Fix

A blank screenshot after opening a new tab usually calls for checking WebDriver’s selected handle and whether the target page is ready—not assuming the visible tab is active to Selenium.

If a Selenium screenshot is blank after a new tab or window opens, explicitly switch WebDriver to the new window handle, then wait for the target page to be ready before capturing. The browser showing the new tab in front does not mean WebDriver has selected it. If the handle and page are correct but the image is still blank, check which screenshot API you use and reproduce with the exact browser and driver versions.

Why a screenshot can be blank after switching windows

Selenium sends commands to the session’s current top-level browsing context. A new tab may appear visually in front while WebDriver remains attached to the original one. Selenium’s documentation explains that when a click opens a new window, WebDriver does not know which window the operating system considers active; your code must select a window handle.

Switching handles is necessary, but it does not guarantee that the new page has finished rendering. A capture made during navigation or before the expected content appears can still be blank or incomplete. Diagnose context selection and page readiness first; do not assume every blank image has the same cause.

Fix it: wait for the new handle, switch, and wait for the page

This Python pattern records the original handle, waits for a second window, switches to the new handle, waits for an expected title, and then saves a screenshot:

from selenium.webdriver.support.ui import WebDriverWait
from selenium.webdriver.support import expected_conditions as EC

original = driver.current_window_handle
# Perform the action that opens the new tab/window.

wait = WebDriverWait(driver, 10)
wait.until(EC.number_of_windows_to_be(2))
new_handle = (set(driver.window_handles) - {original}).pop()
driver.switch_to.window(new_handle)

# Replace this with a condition specific to the target page.
wait.until(lambda d: d.title == "Expected page title")
assert driver.current_window_handle == new_handle
assert driver.save_screenshot("target.png")

The 10-second wait is an example, not a guarantee. Choose a timeout appropriate for the application and use a readiness condition that proves the content you need is present. A title can be sufficient for some pages; for others, wait for a known element or another application-specific signal. Selenium’s documented window example likewise waits for the second window and an expected title: Working with windows and tabs.

For a site that opens more than one window

If the action can open several tabs or windows, do not assume there will be exactly two. Record the original handle, wait until the handle set changes, then identify the new handle or handles and select the one associated with the target page. A title, URL, or known element can help distinguish the intended context.

If you close the new window

After closing a window, switch to a handle that is still open before sending more commands. Otherwise, WebDriver remains pointed at a closed page and may raise No Such Window Exception.

Check the active context and document before capturing

Immediately before taking the screenshot, inspect the current handle, URL, title, and a known page element. These checks help separate a wrong-window or premature-capture problem from a problem in the screenshot route:

  • If the handle is not the one you intended, correct the handle selection.
  • If the URL, title, or expected element is missing, wait for navigation or the application’s content to become ready.
  • If those checks identify the expected page but the file is blank, investigate the screenshot API and the browser/driver environment rather than adding arbitrary delays.

The Python API describes save_screenshot as saving the current window to a PNG and returning False on an I/O error. Check that return value and confirm the output path exists; a successful file write alone does not prove the image contains the expected page.

Know which screenshot API your code calls

The ordinary WebDriver screenshot operation captures the session’s current browsing context. The W3C WebDriver screenshot endpoint is GET /session/{session id}/screenshot; its algorithm checks that the current top-level browsing context remains open and returns no such window if it has closed. See the WebDriver screenshot specification.

A DevTools Protocol call such as Page.captureScreenshot is a different capture route. SeleniumHQ issue #12529, opened August 10, 2023, reports a case where a DevTools screenshot after switching to a popup returned the main window instead. That report is specific to the reported DevTools path. It does not establish that regular WebDriver screenshot methods have the same defect or that the behavior persists in current versions. Read the issue report and reproduce using the same API that fails in your code.

Use WebDriver BiDi only if the browser supports it

WebDriver BiDi defines browsingContext.captureScreenshot, which takes an explicit context ID and returns Base64 image data. Its default capture area is the visible viewport; setting the document origin can capture the full scrollable document. Support depends on the browser and active session, and an unsupported implementation can return unsupported operation. Check the MDN BiDi screenshot reference and your browser’s support before treating BiDi as a workaround.

Troubleshoot a blank or wrong-tab capture

What you observe What to check Next step
The new tab is visible, but the screenshot shows the old page current_window_handle immediately before capture Wait for the new handle and call switch_to.window(new_handle).
The new tab is selected, but its screenshot is empty or incomplete Target URL, title, and a known page element Wait for an application-specific readiness condition before capturing.
The page checks look right, but a DevTools screenshot shows another window Whether the code uses Page.captureScreenshot rather than WebDriver’s screenshot method Reproduce with the same DevTools path; do not generalize the historical issue report to other APIs.
BiDi capture fails with an unsupported-operation error Browser and active-session support for browsingContext.captureScreenshot Use a supported capture route or investigate the ordinary WebDriver path.
Commands fail after a tab was closed Whether WebDriver is still on the closed handle Switch to an open handle before continuing.
The file is absent or cannot be written The screenshot method’s return value and the destination path Check for an I/O error and use a writable path.

Build a minimal reproduction if the basic checks pass

If the intended handle is selected and the expected page content is present, reduce the case to the action that opens the window and the exact capture call. Record these details alongside the result:

  • Selenium language binding and version
  • Browser and driver versions
  • Headless or headed execution
  • Local or remote browser session
  • Whether capture uses a WebDriver method, DevTools, or BiDi
  • Current handle, URL, title, and expected-element check immediately before capture

These details matter because the same symptom does not identify a universal cause. Selenium’s Python API documentation currently identifies version 4.50.0 and documents handle properties and screenshot methods in terms of the current window; other language bindings have their own APIs. Record the versions you actually run rather than assuming behavior from a different binding or release. Selenium Python API documentation.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is to retrieve a screenshot of a public page rather than debug an existing Selenium session, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API. It is not a replacement for switching contexts in Selenium. It can be useful when you need a screenshot without managing a browser session yourself.

cURL (see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation):

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, with response headers indicating the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Frequently Asked Questions

Does switching to a new Selenium window automatically select it?

No. Wait for its handle and explicitly switch to it; visual focus in the browser does not select WebDriver’s context.

Does a successful screenshot call prove the right page was captured?

No. Confirm the current handle and target page content as well as whether the image file was written.
