To stream a playlist with subtitles burned into the picture, use FFmpeg’s subtitles filter to render the timed text onto each video frame, then encode and send the result to YouTube Live over RTMPS. Prepare a playlist file, check that your FFmpeg build includes libass, and test the full setup with a short unlisted stream before relying on it live.
What “burned-in subtitles” means
Burned-in subtitles are pixels in the video image: viewers see the text whenever those frames play, and they cannot switch it off or select a different caption track. FFmpeg’s official filter documentation describes the subtitles filter as drawing subtitles on top of input video using the libass library: FFmpeg subtitles filter documentation.

This is different from YouTube live captions, which are delivered separately as captions embedded in the video using EIA 608/CEA 708 or through a supported caption-software workflow. If viewers need selectable captions, use YouTube’s caption-ingestion setup rather than relying on burned-in text: YouTube Help: Use automatic captioning.

Make sure FFmpeg has the subtitles filter
The subtitles filter requires an FFmpeg build configured with --enable-libass, plus libavcodec and libavformat support for converting the subtitle file to ASS. Check the installed build before composing the full command:

Create the concat list
Put the media files in the order you want them to play, then create a UTF-8 text file such as playlist.txt with one file line per item:
file 'part1.mp4'
file 'part2.mp4'
file 'part3.mp4'
Use the concat demuxer with its safe mode disabled when the list contains paths or filenames that require it. For a simple list of local files, keep the list and files in the same directory and use relative paths. The concat demuxer reads the files sequentially, but its timestamp adjustments can create gaps when stream lengths differ; it also expects compatible stream layouts and codecs. Review the official guidance before using a playlist with mixed formats: FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.

Probe each file to check its video and audio streams, dimensions, frame rate, duration and codecs. A typical check is ffprobe -hide_banner -show_streams -show_format part1.mp4. Resolve mismatched formats or missing audio deliberately rather than assuming that a playlist will behave like one uniform file.
Check subtitle timing and encoding
For subtitles stored separately, place the subtitle file alongside the playlist and confirm that its timestamps match the media. UTF-8 SRT is a straightforward starting point. The filter also provides a charenc option for non-UTF-8 subtitle input, fontsdir for locating fonts, original_size for font scaling when the aspect ratio has changed, and a subtitle-stream index when selecting a subtitle track from a media file.
Check the local filter help for exact option syntax. If a subtitle file contains several languages or tracks, select the intended track explicitly rather than assuming the first one is correct.

Build an FFmpeg command for YouTube Live
Example: SRT subtitles, H.264 video and AAC audio
This is a template, not a universal command: replace the file names, output resolution, frame rate, bitrate, server URL and stream key with values for your files and YouTube Live Control Room. It assumes the playlist files have compatible streams and that the subtitle file is an external SRT covering the same timeline as the concatenated video.
ffmpeg -re -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt
-vf "subtitles=filename=sub.srt:force_style='FontName=Arial,FontSize=28,Outline=1,Shadow=0'"
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 14M -maxrate 14M -bufsize 28M
-r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0 -pix_fmt yuv420p
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "YOUR_RTMPS_SERVER_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
The example uses 1080p at 30 fps and a 14 Mbps H.264 video bitrate, which YouTube Help lists as its recommended bitrate for that resolution and frame rate on the encoder settings page accessed in 2026. The command’s -g 60 at 30 fps sets a two-second GOP/keyframe interval. Set the bitrate and keyframe interval to match YouTube’s current recommendations for your chosen resolution, frame rate and codec; do not treat these values as a guarantee of quality. The filter’s force_style overrides selected subtitle styles, but fonts and punctuation can render differently across systems.

The concat input and subtitle timestamps need to share a usable timeline. Separate SRT timestamps do not automatically restart for every file in a concatenated playlist. If each clip has its own subtitle file, prepare a combined subtitle track with adjusted timestamps or process each clip with its own subtitles before concatenation. Confirm the result locally before streaming.
Put in your YouTube connection details
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or open the stream.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream into the FFmpeg output destination. Do not publish the key or share it in screenshots; anyone with it may be able to send video to your stream.
- Prefer an RTMPS server URL for encrypted transport when supported by your FFmpeg build and YouTube’s ingest settings. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and supports H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and up to 60 fps. The example above uses H.264 and AAC.
- Run FFmpeg and wait for the preview in Live Control Room. Check stream health and confirm that both picture and audio arrive. For a scheduled stream, you may also need to click Go live in Live Control Room.
- When finished, stop FFmpeg and end the stream in Live Control Room as appropriate. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.
Choose resolution, bitrate and keyframes
YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe frequency, and says not to exceed four seconds. It also advises testing with representative sound and motion, monitoring stream health, and checking upload speed. These are YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingest bitrates for the listed modes, on its encoder settings page accessed in 2026:

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Looping the playlist reliably
The command above plays the concat list once and exits when it reaches the end. Do not treat FFmpeg’s video loop filter as a playlist-loop switch: the documented example repeats a frame, not a sequence of files. To repeat a playlist, choose a playlist-level repeat strategy appropriate to your input and installed FFmpeg version, then test its end-of-file behavior with the exact media and subtitles. In every approach, check for timestamp discontinuities, audio gaps and subtitle offsets at the transition from the last item back to the first.

- Run the command locally for several minutes and inspect the output for correct subtitle placement, font rendering, audio/video sync and transitions between files.
- Do a short private or unlisted test stream using the intended resolution, frame rate, audio and representative motion. YouTube specifically advises testing before a live stream.
- Watch Live Control Room’s preview and stream-health indicators; a command that runs without errors does not establish that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
- Keep the stream key private, and confirm that your connection can sustain the chosen bitrate before scheduling a longer broadcast.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
No such filter: subtitles or a libass-related error |
The installed FFmpeg build lacks the required subtitles/libass support. | Check ffmpeg -filters and install or build a version that includes libass and the needed subtitle conversion support. |
| Subtitle file not found or filter parsing error | Path, quoting or special characters in the filename are being interpreted by the shell or filter parser. | Use a simple path without special characters for the first test, quote the filter correctly for your operating system, and consult ffmpeg -h filter=subtitles. |
| Text appears in the wrong language or not at all | Wrong subtitle stream selected, subtitle encoding unsupported, or timestamps do not match the concatenated timeline. | Check the subtitle track and timestamps, use charenc when needed, and confirm whether each clip needs its own adjusted subtitle timing. |
| Gaps, freezes or audio changes at playlist boundaries | Concat inputs have incompatible streams or differing lengths that cause timestamp adjustments. | Probe all files, standardize their stream layouts where necessary, and test the full transition sequence; consult the concat demuxer documentation. |
| YouTube preview never appears or stream health is poor | Incorrect server URL or key, unsupported output settings, insufficient upload capacity, or encoder connection trouble. | Re-copy the stream details from Live Control Room, use a supported codec and ingest mode, lower the output mode if necessary, and monitor stream health during a test. |
| Stream reaches YouTube but remains scheduled | The scheduled broadcast may require a separate confirmation in Live Control Room. | Check the preview and then click Go live when the interface presents that control. |
Copyright, captions and YouTube policy
Burning text into a video does not establish that you have the rights to stream the video, music or subtitles. Use media and subtitle material you are authorized to broadcast, and review YouTube’s policies before scheduling a stream. Repeated or minimally changed material may also raise monetization-policy questions; the ability to stream a file is not a guarantee of monetization eligibility.
If you require a caption track viewers can control, set up YouTube’s separate live-caption pathway. For embedded captions, YouTube says to enable Closed captions in stream setup and configure the encoder for EIA 608/CEA 708; its document says it currently supports one caption track. Its HTTP caption workflow uses a separate caption-ingestion URL and describes a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay. YouTube also says each stream entry point can have one caption feed only. See YouTube’s live-caption instructions.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube playlist rather than a local FFmpeg workflow, StreamNeo keeps uploaded videos looping from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It streams what you upload, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it also automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or its plans; the service streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
