Why Selenium captures the wrong tab
Selenium identifies top-level browser windows and tabs through window handles. It does not infer which tab you meant to use from the browser’s visible or operating-system focus. As the Selenium project’s window guide explains, a link may focus a newly opened tab on screen while WebDriver still needs to be told which window to control.

The screenshot call acts on the driver’s current page context. If your script has not switched to the intended handle, it can capture the original tab—or another selected context—instead.

For a test that opens exactly one new tab, use this sequence in Python. Replace the example click with the action in your test, and adjust the expected window count if other windows are already open.

- Save the current handle before the action that opens the tab.
- Trigger the action and wait until the new handle is available.
- Find the handle that differs from the saved handle and switch to it.
- Verify the selected handle and, if useful, check the URL or title.
- Capture only after those checks succeed.

Selenium’s official example uses the same core pattern: wait for the expected window count, identify the handle other than the original, switch, and assert the current handle.
If more than one tab can open
Do not assume that exactly one handle will differ from the original. Save the full set before the action, wait for the expected increase, then compare the current set with the saved set:

driver.save_screenshot("target.png")When multiple new tabs are possible, identify the intended page by a reliable property such as its URL or title rather than relying on set order. If the page loads asynchronously, wait for that property before capturing.
Close or restore tabs without losing the session context
If the test should leave the new tab open, simply switch back to a still-open saved handle when finished. If it should close the tab, close it while selected, then switch to a handle that remains open. Otherwise the driver can be left pointing at a closed window and raise a No Such Window error on the next command.

Use a page or window screenshot when the desired output is the full current page context. If you need only one component—such as a chart, dialog, or product card—use Selenium’s element screenshot API instead of capturing the entire page and cropping it afterward. Both page/window and element capture are documented in Selenium’s browser interaction documentation.
Changing the capture scope does not select a different tab: first switch to the correct top-level window, then capture either the page or the element within that page. Rendering details can vary with browser, driver, binding, and execution mode; there is no single pixel-identical result guaranteed across all environments.

Troubleshooting the wrong-tab screenshot
