What’s actually slowing this PC down?

You can loop a single music file or a playlist in OBS Studio and send it to YouTube, but clear the rights to every track before configuring the stream. YouTube requires the necessary music rights for live content, and Content ID can interrupt a stream even when you have a license if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel.
1. Clear the music rights before you go live
A remix can involve rights in both the sound recording and the underlying composition. Before using a track, identify the relevant owners and get written permission covering the uses you actually plan: YouTube live streaming, the territories where it will be available, monetization if applicable, and any archived replay. Keep copies of permissions and license terms.

YouTube’s live-stream terms place responsibility on the creator to hold the necessary rights for live content and its territories. A purchase receipt, credit, “free download” label, upload on another platform, or another channel’s use of a song does not by itself establish those rights. YouTube also notes that a “free” label does not prevent Content ID claims. See YouTube’s copyright guidance for music and its livestream terms and conditions.
Ask about Content ID allowlisting
If a rights holder uses Content ID, ask them to allowlist your YouTube channel before testing the licensed tracks. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; a stream can be interrupted even if you say you have permission when the channel is not allowlisted. Follow YouTube’s guidance for licensed content in live streams and confirm the allowlist is active with the rights holder.

Choose a source whose license fits a live broadcast
- YouTube Audio Library: YouTube describes its production music and sound effects as copyright-safe for YouTube videos. Check the selected track’s terms for live and archived use. If a track uses a Creative Commons license, follow the attribution specified for that track. See the Audio Library guidance.
- Creator Music: YouTube’s FAQ says Creator Music does not currently support licensing for live content. Its video-use terms are not permission for this live-stream workflow. See the Creator Music FAQ.
- External “royalty-free” catalogs: Read the specific license and ask the licensor whether it covers live broadcasts, replay archives, monetization, your territories, edits or remixes, and Content ID handling. The label “royalty-free” does not answer those questions on its own. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright and music.
Do not assume a program or catalog’s current availability changes these live-use requirements; check the specific track terms and YouTube’s current live-content guidance.
2. Check that your channel can livestream
YouTube says livestreaming requires a verified channel and no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Check your channel’s current eligibility and complete verification before planning the broadcast. YouTube’s live-streaming help explains the requirements and setup in YouTube Studio.

3. Choose a looping method in OBS
Use Media Source when you want one file to repeat. Use VLC Video when you need a playlist of multiple tracks. A static visual—such as artwork you have permission to use—can accompany the audio; make sure the visual itself is also cleared for the stream.
Recommended Free Tools
Loop one file with Media Source
- Open OBS and select the scene you plan to use, or create a new scene.
- In Sources, select + and choose Media Source. Give it a recognizable name and select OK.
- In the Media Source properties, select the music file using the local file option, then enable Loop. Select OK.
- Add the intended visual to the scene, then arrange and size the sources in the preview. Confirm the music source is not muted and that the audio meter responds during playback.
Loop a playlist with VLC Video
- Install VLC if it is not already installed. For 64-bit OBS, use the matching 64-bit version of VLC.
- In OBS, select Sources > + > VLC Video. Name the source and select OK.
- Add the cleared files to the playlist in the order you want them played. Enable Loop Playlist; enable shuffle only if you want tracks played in a changing order.
- Preview the playlist long enough to check the order, transitions, audio levels, and behavior when the final item ends. Adjust the source or scene if needed.
OBS documents the Loop option for Media Source and looping and shuffle options for VLC Video in its media source guide.

4. Connect OBS to YouTube
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open the Live Control Room. Create or select the stream and check the current event settings.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Select YouTube as the service, then enter or connect the stream URL and stream key shown for the event in YouTube Studio. Exact available fields can depend on the selected OBS connection method.
- Keep the stream key private: anyone who has it may be able to send video to your channel. Do not post it in public, and reset it in YouTube Studio if you believe it has been exposed.
- In OBS, select Start Streaming. Check the preview in YouTube’s Live Control Room before making the event public. Confirm the watch page shows the intended visual and audio.
YouTube’s encoder setup guide covers stream URL, keys, and the Live Control Room. Follow the current values and prompts shown for your account rather than copying a stream key from an old event.
5. Test the whole setup before relying on it
Run OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard and make a short test using the same computer, scene, encoder settings, and network you intend to use. OBS says performance depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; compatible hardware alone does not guarantee that a system can sustain a particular stream. Its Auto-Configuration Wizard and system requirements are useful starting points, not a substitute for testing your actual setup.

YouTube recommends monitoring audio and video quality in its live encoder guidance.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not establish indefinite event support, promise an uninterrupted 24/7 session, or prove that a single event will run continuously. Check the current Live Control Room workflow and account settings before planning a long-running broadcast. If your operational plan uses separate events, communicate any breaks honestly and test how the transition works for your channel.

A local OBS setup also depends on the computer, encoder, power, and network remaining available. Have a person or recovery plan for resolving a frozen source, OBS shutdown, network outage, or YouTube interruption; looping a file only repeats media while OBS is actually sending the stream.
7. Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube interrupts or blocks the stream after a song starts | A Content ID match, missing live-use rights, or a channel that has not been allowlisted by the rights holder | Stop using the track until its live and archive permissions are confirmed. Ask the rights holder to allowlist the channel, then test again. A license claim alone does not ensure Content ID will let the stream continue. |
| The stream has no music | The media source is stopped, muted, pointed at the wrong file, or routed incorrectly | Check the source properties and OBS audio mixer, confirm the meter moves during playback, and listen to the YouTube preview. |
| A playlist stops at the last track or plays in an unexpected order | Playlist looping is off, shuffle is enabled, or the playlist entries are not in the intended order | Review VLC Video’s playlist, disable shuffle if order matters, enable Loop Playlist, and test through the end of the list. |
| VLC Video is unavailable or will not load media | VLC may not be installed or may not match OBS’s architecture | Install VLC and, when using 64-bit OBS, install the matching 64-bit version. Reopen OBS and test the source again. |
| OBS reports dropped frames or YouTube reports poor stream health | The encoder, resolution, frame rate, scene load, or network may exceed what the setup can sustain | Run OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard, reduce demanding settings if appropriate, and test again on the intended computer and connection. Use the system and encoder guidance from OBS and YouTube. |
| The wrong video appears on your channel | The stream key may be incorrect, reused from another event, or exposed | Compare OBS’s stream settings with the current key in YouTube Studio. If the key may have leaked, reset it in Studio before streaming again. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a YouTube channel that keeps replaying uploaded music without leaving a home computer on, StreamNeo is an alternative to running OBS locally. It plays uploaded videos on YouTube; it does not stream from a camera. You still need the rights to every track and visual, and the same copyright and Content ID rules apply.
- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded content from the cloud.
Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. The service is for YouTube streams only.
