For a new full-page screenshot workflow, Playwright is usually easier to pick up: its page screenshot API has a direct fullPage: true option. Selenium can also capture full pages, but the official examples reviewed are tied to particular drivers and language bindings, especially Firefox. The recommendation is based on how the APIs are documented—not a hands-on usability test. If your project already uses Selenium with a driver that supports full-page capture, staying with it may be simpler overall.
What “full-page” means in each API
A normal screenshot often shows only the visible browser viewport. A full-page screenshot extends the image to include content below the fold. In Playwright, that behavior is an explicit option on page.screenshot(); the documented default is false.

Selenium’s general screenshot documentation describes a best-effort screenshot that may cover the entire page, a window, a visible frame, or a display. That description does not establish a consistent full-page API across every browser driver and language binding. The reviewed concrete full-page examples are Firefox-specific.

Playwright: the direct full-page call
After navigating to the target page, use:

Make repeat captures more useful
The screenshot API also documents controls for animation behavior, masks, scale, output path and image quality. Choose options to match the purpose of the capture: for example, animation handling can help reduce motion-related differences, while masks can obscure selected page content. Those controls do not make a page’s underlying state deterministic. The content must still be in the state you intend to capture.
For visual testing, decide what should happen to animations and dynamic content, and use the same page state and capture settings across runs. A screenshot records rendered appearance; it is not a substitute for checking the DOM or accessibility structure. Playwright’s MCP screenshot guidance distinguishes visual verification from structural snapshots.

Selenium: full-page capture depends on the driver
Python with Firefox
The Selenium Python Firefox WebDriver API documents methods including save_full_page_screenshot(filename) and get_full_page_screenshot_as_png(). For example, after creating a Firefox driver and navigating to a page, save the full-page image with:

Java with Firefox
Selenium’s Java HasFullPageScreenshot interface documents getFullPageScreenshotAs(...) and lists FirefoxDriver as an implementing class. The interface is marked beta, so treat it as a driver-specific option rather than a universal Selenium capability. See the Selenium Java interface documentation.

Common issues and checks
- The image stops at the viewport: In Playwright, confirm that the screenshot call includes
fullPage: true. In Selenium, verify that you are calling a full-page method supported by your particular driver and binding, not only the general screenshot API. - A Selenium full-page method is missing: Check the API for the exact language binding and browser driver in use. The cited Selenium full-page examples concern Firefox; they do not establish support for every browser combination.
- Captures differ between runs: Check whether animations or dynamic page content changed and whether your capture settings handle them as intended. Screenshot options can help with repeatability, but do not guarantee identical rendered state.
- You need to inspect structure, not appearance: Use DOM or accessibility inspection for that job. A screenshot shows rendered pixels, not the page’s semantic structure.
