Create a relevant image, export it at a wide landscape size, host it at a public URL, and add that URL to your article’s Open Graph metadata. You can do this without paying for a design tool; the image helps describe the story when it is shared, but it cannot guarantee how a social platform—or Google Discover—will display or distribute it.
What a social preview image is
A social preview image is an ordinary image file referenced by metadata on a webpage. It is not a special image format. Open Graph metadata describes the shared page and identifies the image that platforms may use when presenting its link. The protocol’s basic fields are og:title, og:type, og:url and og:image; it recommends an image alt description as well. See the Open Graph protocol.

For a news article, choose a visual that truthfully represents the reporting: a cleared photograph, commissioned illustration or appropriately licensed image. Avoid a logo-only graphic, a misleading image, or a canvas dominated by headline text. Google advises using relevant, high-quality images rather than generic imagery or text-heavy preferred images in its Discover guidance.

Choose dimensions that work for your intended use
For Google Discover, Google recommends an image at least 1200 pixels wide, more than 300,000 total pixels, and framed at 16:9. Its 1280×720 example has 921,600 pixels. A 1200×675 canvas is also 16:9 and exceeds the stated pixel threshold. These are Discover recommendations, not universal requirements or guarantees for every social platform; platforms may crop previews differently.

If you want to be eligible for Google’s large image preview, allow max-image-preview:large in the page’s robots directives, or use AMP. Eligibility is not a promise of a Discover appearance. Google says preview-image selection is automated and can draw on multiple sources, even when a preferred image is specified. See its image guidance.
Make the image free with Canva Free
- Start a custom design. In Canva, create a custom-size design at 1200×675 or 1280×720. Canva’s Free plan lists social content creation, custom dimensions and JPG/PNG export; plan features can change, so check the current Canva pricing page.
- Use a cleared visual. Upload a newsroom-owned or otherwise cleared photograph, or select an asset whose license permits your intended editorial and social use. Canva’s India content license says Free content licenses are issued at no cost on export and permit social media post/profile images and online publications. Pro content has separate conditions; check the terms for the particular asset in the Canva India content license. Do not extract and redistribute a stock asset by itself outside the license’s allowed design use.
- Design for a fast, honest read. Keep the main subject clear and the composition legible when reduced or cropped. If you add words, use a short label rather than reproducing the whole headline across the image. Keep essential content away from the extreme edges, since a platform’s crop may differ from your canvas.
- Export the file. Choose JPG for a photographic image or PNG for graphics where transparency matters. Canva describes JPG as suited to photographs and a small-file-size choice, while PNG supports transparency and is suited to graphics; see its download file types guide.
- Upload it to a public URL. Put the image on your own site or CDN, for example
https://news.example.in/images/story-preview.jpg. The address should load without a login or other access barrier. Use the final public URL in the metadata, not a local file path or a temporary editing link.
Add Open Graph metadata to the article
Place the following tags in the article’s HTML <head>. Replace the example headline, canonical article URL, image URL and alt text with the actual values. Keep the image description factual and concise.

Check the published page and its preview
- Open the public image URL in a browser where you are not signed in; confirm it loads and shows the intended file.
- View the live article’s page source or rendered HTML and verify that the Open Graph tags are in the document head, the article URL is correct, and the image URL matches the exported image.
- Check the article using the preview or debugging tool provided by the social platform where you plan to share it. There is no single cache-refresh procedure established for every platform; if you change the image or metadata, inspect the preview again using that platform’s current tool.
- For Discover, check that your robots directives allow
max-image-preview:largeif you want to enable a large preview. This does not control Google’s eventual image choice or guarantee distribution.
Common problems and fixes
- The preview shows the wrong image: Confirm that
og:imagepoints to the intended, publicly accessible file, then inspect the platform’s current preview tool. A platform may retain an older preview, and Google may select an image automatically from multiple sources. - The preview has no image: Check that the image URL loads without authentication and that the tag is present in the article’s head with a complete URL. Then recheck the share preview; platform behavior and refresh procedures differ.
- The image looks awkwardly cropped: Keep the subject and any essential text within a central safe area, and preview the live link in the target platform. A 16:9 design follows Google’s Discover recommendation but does not prevent other platforms from using a different crop.
- The image is too small for the intended Discover guidance: Export a 16:9 image at least 1200 pixels wide and above 300,000 pixels total, such as 1200×675 or 1280×720.
- You are unsure whether an asset is free to publish: Check the license for that specific asset and the intended use before exporting. Canva’s Free and Pro content do not necessarily have the same terms.
