For a new Python workflow where full-page screenshots are the main requirement, start with Playwright. Its screenshot API has an explicit full_page=True option. Selenium is still a sensible choice when your team already maintains Selenium suites, but its standard Python WebDriver screenshot methods capture the current window; full-document capture depends on using a browser-specific or BiDi API.
This is a recommendation about this particular task, not proof that one framework is faster or more reliable overall. The available official documentation does not establish an India-specific technical difference.

How the full-page screenshot APIs differ
| Approach | Full-page method | Important scope |
|---|---|---|
| Playwright for Python | page.screenshot(path="screenshot.png", full_page=True) |
The documented option captures the full scrollable page. The API also supports returning screenshot bytes. Playwright screenshot documentation |
| Selenium standard Python WebDriver | driver.save_screenshot("./image.png") |
Standard screenshot methods capture the current window; do not assume they capture the full document. Selenium WebDriver Python API · Selenium windows and tabs documentation |
| Selenium Firefox WebDriver | Methods include save_full_page_screenshot and get_full_page_screenshot_as_png. |
These are documented in Selenium’s Firefox Python API. Do not generalize this Firefox-specific interface to every Selenium browser. Selenium Firefox Python API |
| Selenium BiDi browsing-context API | capture_screenshot accepts origin="viewport" or origin="document". |
Check support in the exact browser and runtime your team will use; the API documentation does not establish support for every combination. Selenium BiDi browsing-context API |
Choose based on your team’s situation
Starting a new Python screenshot workflow
Choose Playwright when the main requirement is to capture the whole scrollable page. The full-page behavior is a direct, documented argument to the page screenshot call, with both synchronous and asynchronous Python examples in the documentation.
Keeping an established Selenium test suite
Keeping Selenium can be the practical choice if it fits your existing suite and team practices. First confirm that the specific browser/API path you plan to use provides document-level capture. The standard WebDriver screenshot call alone is a current-window capture.
Using Selenium with Firefox
If your required browser is Firefox, Selenium’s Firefox Python API documents full-document screenshot methods. Use those methods deliberately rather than assuming equivalent methods exist in other Selenium drivers.
Considering Selenium BiDi
The BiDi browsing-context API exposes a document-versus-viewport origin choice. Before making it part of a maintained workflow, validate the exact Selenium package, browser, and runtime combination your environment supports.
Capture a full-page screenshot with Playwright in Python
Install Playwright for Python, install the browser you intend to test, then use the synchronous API below. It navigates to a page, writes a full-page PNG, and closes the browser.

Install the Python package:
python -m pip install playwright -
Install a supported browser:
python -m playwright install chromium -
Save this as
full_page.pyand runpython full_page.py https://example.com:import sys from pathlib import Path from playwright.sync_api import sync_playwright url = sys.argv[1] if len(sys.argv) > 1 else "https://example.com" with sync_playwright() as p: browser = p.chromium.launch() page = browser.new_page() page.goto(url, wait_until="networkidle") page.screenshot(path="screenshot.png", full_page=True) browser.close() print(f"Saved full-page screenshot to {Path('screenshot.png').resolve()}")
The essential full-page setting is full_page=True. The chosen networkidle wait is an example, not a guarantee that every site has finished its visual work: pages with ongoing requests or delayed content may need a different wait condition or a site-specific readiness check.
Async version and screenshot bytes
For an asynchronous Python application, Playwright documents the same full-page argument on the async page API. The screenshot call can return bytes instead of writing to a file:
import asyncio
from playwright.async_api import async_playwright
async def main():
async with async_playwright() as p:
browser = await p.chromium.launch()
page = await browser.new_page()
await page.goto("https://example.com", wait_until="networkidle")
image_bytes = await page.screenshot(full_page=True)
with open("screenshot.png", "wb") as image_file:
image_file.write(image_bytes)
await browser.close()
asyncio.run(main())
Returning bytes is useful when the next step stores, encodes, or compares an image without first reading it back from disk. See the Playwright screenshot documentation for the API details.
Rank #4
Use Selenium where its capture path fits
For Selenium’s standard Python WebDriver API, a minimal screenshot call is:
driver.save_screenshot("./image.png")
That call captures the current window, not necessarily the full document. If you need a full-page result, select a documented route for your browser: Selenium’s Firefox-specific full-document methods, or the BiDi browsing-context screenshot API with document origin where the required browser/runtime supports it. Confirm the method and behavior against your pinned Selenium package and browser rather than silently substituting a viewport screenshot.

- Capture scope: Is the required output the visible viewport or the entire scrollable document?
- Browser coverage: Which browser and driver combinations are required, and do they support the full-document API you plan to maintain?
- Existing investment: Does the team already operate Selenium infrastructure and tests that make staying with Selenium preferable to a framework change?
- Maintainable API path: Can your pinned Python package and browser versions run the selected screenshot method reliably in your CI environment?
There is no documented basis here for a numerical speed comparison, a general reliability winner, or a claim that Indian teams need a different technical choice. Decide on the tested browser/API combination and the cost of changing an existing suite, not an assumed framework-wide ranking.

Troubleshooting common capture problems
The image contains only the visible window
With Playwright, check that the screenshot call includes full_page=True. With Selenium’s standard Python WebDriver methods, a current-window image is the documented behavior; use a supported full-document method for your browser instead.
A Selenium full-page method is missing
Check which driver/API you are using. The named full-document methods are documented by Selenium’s Firefox API, not established as general methods for every Selenium browser. For BiDi document capture, verify support for your particular browser and runtime.
The page is captured before content appears
A navigation wait does not necessarily mean every site-specific visual element is ready. Wait for the relevant element or a known page-ready condition before taking the screenshot. Avoid assuming one wait mode suits every application.
The screenshot is unexpectedly large or awkward to inspect
A full-page image can be much taller than a viewport image because it includes the scrollable document. If your downstream test compares images, keep viewport, browser, and page state consistent between runs; otherwise differences may reflect changed capture conditions rather than the feature under test.
Or skip the browser setup
For a direct screenshot request instead of managing a browser locally, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It accepts a URL and can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. The one-request cURL example below saves a WebP screenshot; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and setup.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
- It accepts cookie/consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off.
- Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing; response headers report the page verdict and whether the request was billed.
- Its MCP server provides
take_screenshot,get_page_info, andcapture_pdftools for AI agents and MCP clients. - The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
