How to Choose a Cloud Server for 24/7 YouTube Streaming

Choose a cloud server for 24/7 YouTube streaming by distinguishing relay from encoding, estimating transfer, checking regional plan terms, and testing recovery.

Choose a cloud server by first deciding whether it will only relay an already encoded video feed or encode and render the video itself. Then calculate monthly outbound transfer from your bitrate, compare regional plan allowances and overage costs, and test the full streaming path before committing. YouTube’s recommended bitrate does not tell you how many vCPUs an encoder needs; sustained encoding performance depends on the actual content, codec, resolution, and frame rate.

Start by defining what the server must do

A continuous YouTube stream can put very different demands on a server depending on its job. Write down the source and processing path before comparing plans:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Relay an encoded feed: The video is already encoded, and the server forwards it to YouTube. The main concerns are a stable network path, transfer allowance, and a reliable relay process.
  • Encode or render: The server creates or re-encodes the video, combines scenes, or renders graphics. CPU or GPU capacity now matters, and there is no universal vCPU size that guarantees a sustained encode.
  • Receive a live source: If a camera or another live source feeds the server, account for the source connection and any compositing or encoding as well as the outgoing stream.

A static image, a playlist, a composited scene, and a live source are not interchangeable workloads. If encoding is required, benchmark the intended content at the intended settings for long enough to reveal sustained performance, rather than relying on a short setup test.

Choose YouTube-compatible output settings

Set the codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate before estimating server costs. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe frequency, not exceeding four seconds. Its H.264 recommendations include 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. Recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so check YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance for the profile you plan to use.

  • Protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP. Protect the stream key as a credential and do not expose it in public logs, screenshots, or shared configuration.
  • HLS: YouTube supports HLS for certain workflows, including HDR or codecs not supported over RTMP. It has higher latency and requires compliant segments, a rolling playlist, and HTTPS behavior; use it when the workflow needs it and meets YouTube’s requirements.
  • Testing: Test with representative movement and audio, not only a static frame. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health.

YouTube transcodes incoming live streams into different output formats, but that does not remove the need to send a valid, stable ingest feed.

Estimate monthly transfer before choosing a plan

For one continuous feed at a constant bitrate, estimate decimal gigabytes for a 30-day month with:

monthly decimal GB ≈ bitrate in Mbps × 3,600 × 24 × 30 ÷ 8,000

Continuous bitrate Video transfer for 30 days Planning note
6 Mbps 1,944 GB (about 1.94 TB) Calculated from bitrate and month length; excludes protocol overhead and other server traffic.
10 Mbps 3,240 GB (about 3.24 TB) Calculated from bitrate and month length; excludes protocol overhead and other server traffic.

These are calculations, not provider-published quotas. Add margin for protocol overhead, source downloads, software updates, monitoring, and any other workloads on the server. A provider may define billable transfer differently, so compare the estimate with the plan’s exact regional allowance and billing terms.

Compare regional plans on the costs that affect a live feed

Check the plan available in the server’s intended region rather than comparing headline prices alone. The examples below show why transfer accounting, resource class, and location need to be considered together; they do not establish that any plan can sustain a particular encode.

Provider What to check Important qualification
Amazon Lightsail Bundle memory, vCPU, disk, transfer allowance, and current regional price. Inbound and outbound traffic count toward its allowance; excess outbound transfer can be charged. The pricing page showed example Linux/Unix general-purpose bundles from $5/month with 1 TB transfer through $24/month with 4 TB transfer when checked; displayed prices and availability can change.
DigitalOcean Droplets Plan-specific outbound allowance, CPU or GPU catalog, and total recurring cost. Billing documentation says inbound transfer is free, each Droplet plan has an included outbound amount, and additional outbound transfer is billed at $0.01 per GiB. Allowances depend on the plan and pool at team level; confirm applicable terms.
Hetzner Cloud Shared versus dedicated resources, product and location transfer allowance, and service terms. Included traffic varies by product and location. Check the intended region’s current plan details and applicable SLA.

Also include any relevant IP or storage charges in the recurring total. Provider plan values, regions, and billing terms can change; verify them directly before buying.

Check compute, network location, and availability terms

Size compute for measured encoding, not a bitrate table

If the server only relays an encoded feed, do not pay for assumed encoding capacity you will not use. If it renders or encodes, test the actual workload on the candidate resource class. Shared and dedicated CPU plans may behave differently under sustained load; do not infer encoding capability from a plan name or YouTube’s output bitrate recommendation.

Choose a region for the real source and ingest path

Consider where the source, operator, and YouTube ingest connection sit, then test the route you will actually use. A provider’s advertised transfer allowance does not establish the quality or performance of its network path to your source or ingest endpoint.

Read availability terms as terms, not as a broadcast guarantee

Hetzner’s Cloud Server SLA describes a 99.9% monthly availability objective, subject to its definitions and exclusions. That objective is not a promise that a live broadcast will never drop: the encoder process, source, network path, and recovery setup can each fail independently. Check the applicable agreement and configure monitoring and restart behavior for the process you run.

Make the decision with a test before buying long term

  1. Document the workload: Record whether the source is a static image, playlist, composited scene, or live feed, and whether the server relays, encodes, or renders it.
  2. Choose the output profile: Select codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, protocol, and keyframe interval using YouTube’s current guidance.
  3. Calculate transfer: Estimate a 30-day total, then add headroom for overhead and all other traffic the server will generate.
  4. Compare plans in the target region: Check resource type, transfer allowance and excess charges, storage or IP costs, and network route considerations.
  5. Run a representative sustained test: For encoding, test actual content and settings. For relaying, test the full source-to-YouTube path. Confirm the feed remains healthy over time.
  6. Set up recovery and monitoring: Watch the host process and YouTube stream health, and arrange a restart or recovery action for a stopped process or dropped connection.

Troubleshooting a cloud-streaming setup

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
YouTube reports poor or unstable stream health Bitrate or network delivery is inconsistent; the encode may also be overloaded. Check YouTube stream health, host resource use, and the complete network path. Test the configured bitrate under representative movement and audio.
Encoding drops frames or cannot sustain the profile The selected CPU or GPU resource cannot maintain the actual encode workload. Repeat a sustained test with the intended content and settings. Reduce processing demands or select a resource that passes that test; bitrate guidance alone cannot size the server.
The stream stops after a process or connection failure The encoder or relay exited, or the network path was interrupted, without an effective recovery action. Monitor the process and stream status, then configure and test restart or recovery behavior. Verify that a restart reconnects successfully to YouTube.
Transfer use or charges exceed expectations The estimate omitted overhead or other traffic, or the provider counts traffic differently than expected. Review provider usage records and the plan’s regional billing definition. Recalculate with all server traffic and choose an allowance with margin.
Stream fails to connect or authenticate Ingest settings, protocol, or stream key may be incorrect or outdated. Confirm the selected YouTube ingest protocol and current stream configuration. Replace an exposed or compromised key and update the encoder securely.
