Selenium 4 Alpha 6 was a historical prerelease announced on June 1, 2020; the official downloads archive dates its artifacts to May 28, 2020. Its headline changes were Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP) remoting across Grid, an early GraphQL foundation, and improved Node configuration through TOML. Python and Ruby notes add narrower language-specific details. Alpha 6 is not the version to install for new work: Selenium’s downloads page listed 4.49.0 as stable in September 2026. Selenium’s announcement and downloads page distinguish the release-era news from current setup guidance.
What Alpha 6 changed
The release announcement emphasized infrastructure and configuration changes more than new end-user WebDriver commands. The main distinctions are what the project described as available in the alpha, and how mature each item was.

| Area | What was announced | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| CDP and Grid | “Full remoting of the CDP protocol across the Grid” | CDP communication could be remoted across Selenium Grid. The announcement did not report a speed gain or benchmark. |
| GraphQL | A “skeleton” of GraphQL support | Early infrastructure, not a complete management interface. The announcement said fleshing it out and adding a user interface for the endpoint remained future work. |
| Node configuration | Improved configuration options, especially for Nodes, via TOML | A configuration-format improvement; the announcement did not enumerate settings or describe migration steps. |
| Python binding | Abstract Base Classes added to WebElement and WebDriver | A Python-specific changelog change, not a claim about every language binding. |
| Ruby binding | Experimental Chrome DevTools Protocol support | A contributor described this as experimental support in selenium-webdriver 4.0.0.alpha6. |
The announcement also mentioned general improvements and fixes, using the informal phrase “A bajillion improvements & fixes.” It did not itemize that phrase or provide a count.
What the CDP change meant for WebDriver testing
CDP is Chrome’s DevTools Protocol. Selenium’s Alpha 6 announcement singled out remoting CDP across Grid, making it the release’s clearest Grid-related highlight. The announcement does not specify which workflows were enabled, provide setup instructions, or claim that tests became faster. Treat it as a release-era capability note, not a performance promise or a description of current Grid behavior.

How mature were GraphQL and language-specific changes?
GraphQL was an early foundation
The announcement called GraphQL support a skeleton and noted that more work—including a user interface for its endpoint—was still to come. It should not be read as a finished Grid administration experience.
Python changes were specific to Python
The Selenium Python changelog records an Abstract Base Class added to WebElement and WebDriver for Alpha 6. It also records two Alpha 6 Post 2 corrections: one to abstract-base-class usage and another to the release build step. These entries do not establish equivalent changes in other bindings. See the Python changelog.

Ruby’s CDP support was explicitly experimental
A Ruby-binding contributor described experimental Chrome DevTools Protocol support in selenium-webdriver 4.0.0.alpha6. That statement is about the Ruby alpha package and should not be generalized to all Selenium languages.

The dates differ because the official announcement and artifact listing record different events. Selenium published its announcement on June 1, 2020; its downloads archive lists Alpha 6 artifacts with a May 28, 2020 release date. The archive names the Selenium HTML Runner JAR, Java ZIP, and Selenium Server JAR. Use the relevant date for the relevant context rather than treating them as a single timestamp.

Should you install Alpha 6 now?
No, not for a new project. Alpha 6 was a prerelease in Selenium 4’s development cycle. The Selenium downloads page listed Selenium 4.49.0 as stable in September 2026; check that official page when installing because the stable version changes. Do not follow archived Alpha 6 artifact links as current installation advice.
Capture a page while testing a website
A WebDriver test can navigate a browser and validate behavior; a screenshot API is a separate option when you need an image or PDF artifact from a URL. If you are automating a browser yourself, use the Selenium documentation and the setup appropriate to your language and installed browser. Alpha 6’s release notes are not a current installation guide.

ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; this cURL example saves a WebP screenshot:

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. It accepts and removes cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be disabled. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. AI agents can use its MCP server tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
