Sudden many new floaters, new flashes, a dark curtain or shadow, or a sudden change in vision needs urgent attention. Contact an ophthalmologist or other eye-care professional immediately; if you cannot reach one—especially with a curtain, shadow, or sudden vision loss—go to an emergency room. A retinal tear or detachment can threaten sight, and symptoms cannot tell you for certain what is happening.
When should I go to the doctor for floaters and flashes?
Act immediately if you notice a sudden burst of new floaters, new flashes of light, a curtain or shadow in your vision, or a sudden change in sight. The National Eye Institute says to contact an eye doctor or go to an emergency room right away when retinal detachment symptoms occur. The American Academy of Ophthalmology advises calling an ophthalmologist immediately for sudden flashes, many new floaters, or a peripheral shadow.

If symptoms are new and persistent but do not include those urgent warning signs, contact an eye-care professional promptly for advice. The official guidance does not set one universal appointment interval for every isolated first-time symptom. Do not wait for vision to worsen when a warning sign is present.

A dark curtain or shadow over part of your field of vision can be a warning of retinal detachment. A sudden increase in floaters, flashes, or a sudden drop in vision can also signal a retinal tear or detachment. The National Eye Institute states: “Retinal detachment is a medical emergency.” National Eye Institute: Retinal Detachment.
#1 Best Overall
- ORIGINAL STRENGTH: Provides temporary relief for mild, occasional dry eye symptoms
- FAST ACTING: Instantly lubricates and moisturizes
- EASY TO USE: Apply 1-2 drops in the affected eye(s) as needed
- SOOTHING: Safe to use as often as needed
- VALUE SIZE: Two convenient multidose bottles
These symptoms do not prove that the retina is detached, but only an eye examination can assess the cause. If a curtain or shadow, sudden vision loss, or a substantial burst of new floaters or flashes occurs and an eye doctor is unavailable, seek emergency care.
Why am I suddenly seeing floaters?
Floaters may look like dark spots, threads, squiggles, or cobwebs that drift across your vision. They often occur when small strands in the clear gel inside the eye, called the vitreous, cast shadows on the retina. With age, the vitreous can change and pull away from the retina; this may cause floaters and flashes in peripheral vision. Sometimes a tear occurs during that change, which is why a sudden onset or increase should be assessed rather than assumed harmless.

Are flashes of light in my vision serious?
Flashes can occur as the vitreous pulls on the retina, and they may accompany a retinal tear. Some people also experience patterned flashes—such as jagged lines or heat-wave-like shapes—with migraine, sometimes without a headache. The appearance of a flash alone cannot safely rule out a retinal problem, particularly if it is new, occurs with new floaters, or comes with a shadow or vision change.

What happens during an eye examination?
An eye-care professional may put drops in your eyes to widen the pupils and examine the retina. A dilated eye exam allows the clinician to look for a retinal tear or detachment; the National Eye Institute describes it as a way to identify these problems early. A symptom checklist, phone camera, or online image cannot replace this examination.
Who has a higher risk of retinal problems?
Risk factors described by the National Eye Institute and the American Academy of Ophthalmology include:

- FAST ACTING: Instantly moisturizes and lubricates
- RELIABLE PROTECTION: Active ingredients provide lasting lubrication for dry eyes

- Marked nearsightedness.
- Previous retinal detachment in either eye, or a family history of retinal detachment.
- Prior eye surgery, including cataract surgery, or serious eye injury.
- Diabetic retinopathy; diabetes is also associated with increased risk of floaters.
- Some other eye conditions or circumstances, including weak areas of the retina and certain glaucoma medications.
This is not an exhaustive list. Having one or more risk factors does not establish the cause of a symptom, and having none does not make sudden warning signs safe to ignore.

What is the difference between stable floaters and warning symptoms?
| What you notice | How to respond |
|---|---|
| Floaters that have been present and remain stable | They are commonly related to vitreous changes, but seek professional advice if they change or you are concerned. |
| A sudden burst or many new floaters, especially with flashes | Contact an ophthalmologist immediately for urgent assessment. |
| A dark curtain or shadow, or sudden vision loss | Seek immediate ophthalmology or emergency care. |
| Patterned flashes that could resemble migraine | Do not use the pattern alone to rule out a retinal cause; new or changing symptoms need professional assessment. |
These patterns can help you describe what has changed, but they cannot diagnose the cause.
