A commander of the Tigray Peace Forces (TPF), an armed group aligned with Ethiopia’s federal government, said on October 2, 2026, that TPLF forces had been wiped out and the TPF was close to controlling all of Tigray. Al Jazeera reported that it could not immediately verify the claim. The report does not establish who controls every locality or that Mekelle has been captured.

Who controls Tigray now?

The October 2 report does not establish full TPF control of Tigray. It presents competing statements and accounts amid renewed fighting, rather than independently verified territorial boundaries. The near-total-control statement is the TPF commander’s claim, not a confirmed change in control.

What did the TPF claim, and has it been verified?

The TPF commander said TPLF forces had been wiped out and that his group was close to gaining full control of the region. Al Jazeera said it could not immediately verify the assertion. The report therefore does not confirm that TPLF forces have been eliminated or that the TPF controls the whole region.

Is Mekelle under government control?

The report does not say that Mekelle was captured. Residents told Reuters on Friday that federal forces were closing on the regional capital. That account indicates an advance toward the city, not confirmed control of it.

What is the TPLF’s response?

TPLF chairperson Debretsion Gebremichael acknowledged that federal forces had occupied some parts of Tigray and said his forces would counter-attack “in due course.” This is the TPLF chairperson’s account and response; it does not independently verify the extent of federal control.

How did the fighting resume?

Al Jazeera reported that fighting resumed in September between Ethiopian federal forces, including the TPF, and an opposition alliance led by the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF). Seven armed and political groups announced the alliance on September 20, 2026. The report said the alliance’s stated goal was to remove Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s administration and establish an inclusive transitional government.

The report also said the African Union had reported the previous month that Tigrayan forces seized airports in Mekelle, Axum and Shire and detained federal personnel, disrupting civilian air services. These developments are relayed through Al Jazeera’s account; they do not settle current control of the airports or the wider region.

What are the effects on civilians and neighbouring regions?

Al Jazeera described electricity cuts, internet blackouts and a lack of communications in Tigray. It reported that some civilians had begun fleeing toward neighbouring Amhara and Afar, fearing the fighting could reach major urban centres. The report also described worsening humanitarian conditions and said aid agencies, including the United Nations, were relocating some operations to newly secured areas to maintain a minimum level of humanitarian access. The report does not independently establish the full extent of these conditions or movements.

According to Al Jazeera Arabic Ethiopia Bureau Chief Mohammed Taha Tawakel, Tigray is home to between six and seven million people. The report attributes that range to Tawakel and does not identify an underlying demographic source, so it should be treated as his reported estimate rather than an independently verified population figure.

What is the regional diplomatic backdrop?

Ethiopian military officials accused Eritrea, Egypt and Sudan of supporting the Tigrayan-led alliance, according to Al Jazeera. Eritrea and Egypt denied accusations that they backed efforts to destabilise Ethiopia. The accusations are not proof of foreign support. The African Union called for “maximum restraint” and urged the three countries to “refrain from actions or statements that could further escalate tensions and undermine regional peace.”

What is confirmed by the October 2 report?

  • The TPF commander claimed his forces were close to full control; Al Jazeera said it could not immediately verify the claim.
  • Residents told Reuters that federal forces were advancing toward Mekelle, while the TPLF chairperson acknowledged federal forces had occupied some areas and said his forces would counter-attack.
  • The report described fighting extending beyond Tigray into neighbouring Amhara and Afar, along with communications disruption and civilian flight.
  • It reported diplomatic allegations and denials, not established evidence that Eritrea, Egypt or Sudan supported the alliance.

These details come from Al Jazeera’s October 2, 2026 report, “Ethiopian gov’t-aligned group claims close to full control of Tigray region.”
