1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA working email API does not tell you which part of your SaaS sent a message, what the provider accepted, or what the recipient’s mail server reported. Before adding another API, trace those as separate questions: what did the application submit? and what happened after submission?
What “sent” means—and what it does not
Email systems expose several stages that are easy to mistake for one another. A successful request means a provider accepted the request; it does not, by itself, prove the recipient’s mail server received the message.

Amazon SES describes its “Send” event as confirmation that the request succeeded and SES will attempt delivery. SES records “Delivery” separately, alongside events such as bounce, complaint, rejection, and delay. SES also counts a send when account-level or global suppression prevents delivery. These statuses answer different operational questions; a request record is not a recipient-level outcome.

Map every path that can send mail
Start with an inventory, not a provider shortlist. Trace possible routes across the application and its surrounding systems so a message sent outside the main API integration does not disappear from the investigation.
- Application code and framework integrations, including each sending identity and API credential.
- Scheduled jobs, background workers, and other automated workflows.
- Vendors or other services that send on the product’s behalf.
- SMTP credentials and direct SMTP connections, as well as API-based sending.
- Domains, providers, and environments associated with each route.
For each route, record its owner, credential or identity, sending domain, and the logs that can confirm activity. This is an audit checklist, not an assumption that every SaaS uses every route.
Join application records to provider events
Start with the request trail
Compare application logs with the provider’s request or event logs. Mailgun documents an analytics logs API for querying and filtering customer event logs. Its documentation does not establish a retention duration or that raw message content is always included, so check those capabilities for the specific records you need. Mailgun Logs API
Check logging coverage before trusting an empty result
In Amazon SES, CloudTrail records supported API activity, but SES data events are disabled by default, do not appear in CloudTrail Event history, and may incur additional charges. SES SMTP-interface activity is not logged to CloudTrail events. AWS recommends current SES APIs for comprehensive activity logging; CloudTrail alone is not a complete record of SES traffic. SES event publishing is a separate route for sending events to destinations such as CloudWatch, Data Firehose, SNS, or EventBridge. It requires a configuration set and for the message to be associated with that set. A missing event can therefore reflect coverage or configuration, rather than proof that no message was sent. Amazon SES: Event publishing
Correlate across systems
Give messages stable identifiers that let you connect a product action to a provider event. SES supports name-value message tags, including automatic tags for caller IAM identity, sending domain, outgoing IP, source IP, and TLS version. Use application tags to distinguish workflow, template, tenant, or environment where appropriate.
Azure Communication Services email logs document correlation IDs mapped to message IDs, plus message-level and recipient-level status records and SMTP status codes. This illustrates why an identifier that crosses application and provider logs is useful: it lets an investigation move from the initiating workflow to the provider’s result. Microsoft notes that the service is undergoing breaking changes and some services are being retired, so verify that the documented logging features apply to the current product offering before relying on them. When you need to see the message itself
Delivery events do not necessarily reveal the exact headers, body, attachments, or raw message source. Confirm that the provider exposes the content you need and that the feature was enabled when the message was sent.

Cloudflare Email Service offers an optional preview for previewable messages. When available, it can show HTML and text bodies, headers, attachments, and raw source. Cloudflare says previews are retained for about seven days and previewability depends on enabling Email preview. Its Activity log filters cover a selected time range between 30 minutes and 30 days, according to documentation last updated July 17, 2026. Cloudflare: Email logs
Those windows answer different needs: the Activity log’s filtering range is not a promise that message content is retained for the same period. If exact content matters during an investigation, verify the available preview and its retention rather than inferring content from delivery status.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical investigation sequence
- List sending routes and identities. Map application paths, jobs, integrations, vendors, API keys, SMTP credentials, domains, providers, and environments.
- Find the application-side request. Record the workflow and any message or correlation identifier, then locate the matching provider request or event record.
- Verify the provider’s logging path. Check whether it covers the interface used, whether logging was enabled, and whether the relevant time period remains queryable.
- Follow the event chain. Distinguish request acceptance from delivery, bounce, complaint, rejection, delay, suppression, and recipient-level status where available.
- Inspect content only if needed. Confirm that the provider exposes a preview or raw message for the relevant messages and that the feature was enabled before they were sent.
- Document gaps with the findings. Note which routes or event types are not covered so an absent record is not treated as conclusive evidence that no send occurred.
Choose visibility by the question you need to answer
These services document different scopes, not a controlled comparison or a universal ranking. Define the evidence you need, then verify the provider’s coverage for your actual sending paths.
- Request provenance: Can you identify the API caller, source IP, SMTP session, or other origin?
- Outcome detail: Are send, delivery, bounce, complaint, rejection, delay, and per-recipient statuses available?
- Content visibility: Can you inspect headers, body, attachments, or raw RFC 5322 source—and for how long?
- Correlation: Can you connect an application workflow to provider message IDs, correlation IDs, or tags?
- Coverage requirements: Is logging on by default, does it require configuration, or does it omit a sending interface?
- Retention and cost: How long are the relevant records available, and are there additional charges?
The right setup is the one that can answer the specific operational question for every sending route you rely on. A replacement API cannot fill a visibility gap unless its logs capture the paths, identifiers, events, and—when necessary—content your investigation requires.
