Secure OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect: A Safer Integration Checklist

A practical OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect security guide covering PKCE, redirect URIs, transaction protections, issuer mix-up, and ID Token validation.

Secure an OAuth 2.0 integration by using the authorization code flow with transaction-specific PKCE, matching redirect URIs exactly, and validating every OpenID Connect (OIDC) ID Token before relying on its claims. OAuth 2.0 handles authorization; OIDC adds an identity layer for verifying end-user authentication. Calling the process “OAuth login” can obscure that distinction: OIDC is requested with the openid scope and returns an ID Token.

OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect do different jobs

OAuth 2.0 is an authorization framework. It lets a client obtain access to a protected resource under defined conditions. By itself, it does not define a standard authentication protocol for a client to establish who a user is.

OpenID Connect builds an identity layer on OAuth 2.0. A client requests OIDC by including the openid scope; the authentication result includes an ID Token whose claims the client must validate under OpenID Connect Core 1.0. An access token and an ID Token are not interchangeable:

  • ID Token: evidence of an authentication event and end-user identity for the client.
  • Access token: authorization to access a resource. Do not infer identity from it unless the applicable provider and resource contract explicitly defines that use.

Choose safeguards for your client architecture

The core OAuth protections apply across client types, but browser and native applications have additional architectural considerations. RFC 9700, the IETF’s OAuth 2.0 Security Best Current Practice, was published in January 2025. Browser-based deployments should also consult RFC 10017, the IETF guidance published in August 2026 specifically for browser OAuth threats and practices.

Client type Core integration considerations Architecture-specific point
Browser application Authorization code flow, PKCE, exact redirect matching, and OIDC validation when requesting authentication. Use RFC 10017’s browser-specific threat guidance. Token handling depends on whether tokens are held by a backend, in the browser runtime, or in another design; no universal storage choice is established here.
Native application Authorization code flow with PKCE and exact redirect matching. Native redirects have a narrow localhost-port exception to exact matching. Native redirect and external user-agent considerations should be addressed in the app’s design.
Confidential server-side client Authorization code flow with PKCE is recommended, even though the client can authenticate itself at the token endpoint. Document the configured issuer, provider endpoints, client authentication, and token handling for the deployment.

Implement the authorization flow with transaction-bound checks

  1. Configure a trusted issuer

Start with an authorization server or OpenID Provider issuer that your application has configured and trusts. Do not use a user-controlled issuer or endpoint as the basis for discovery. Authorization Server Metadata can help deployments improve security, including by detecting PKCE support. Record the provider’s expected issuer and endpoints as deployment configuration.

  2. Create fresh protection values for each request

For every authorization transaction, generate a new PKCE verifier and derive an S256 code challenge. RFC 9700 identifies S256 as the challenge method that currently prevents disclosure of the verifier in the authorization request. Keep the verifier for the corresponding code exchange; do not reuse it across transactions.

When using OIDC, include a new transaction-specific nonce and later check the returned claim against it. Use a one-time state value securely bound to the user agent when needed for CSRF protection or application state. Never use constant or reusable values. RFC 9700 permits relying on PKCE for CSRF protection only after confirming that the authorization server supports PKCE; otherwise, use state or nonce as appropriate.

  3. Register and enforce the complete redirect URI

Register the complete callback URI and require exact string matching when processing authorization requests. RFC 9700 states that authorization servers must use exact matching, except for port numbers in localhost redirect URIs for native apps. Do not accept a URI merely because it shares a prefix or host suffix with a registered value, and do not use wildcards or loose patterns.

A callback or follow-on endpoint must not redirect a browser to an arbitrary destination supplied in a request parameter. Open redirects can help an attacker exfiltrate authorization codes or tokens, or mislead a user.

  4. Redeem the code using the original verifier

Send the authorization code to the configured token endpoint with the PKCE verifier from that same transaction and the expected redirect URI. The authorization server must enforce a challenge that was sent with the authorization request and must not accept an unpaired verifier if no challenge was sent. Public clients are required to use PKCE; RFC 9700 recommends it for confidential clients as well.

  5. Validate the ID Token before using its claims

Apply OpenID Connect Core 1.0 validation appropriate to the flow and token delivery path. At a minimum, check that the iss value exactly matches the expected issuer and that aud contains your registered client ID. Treat any additional audiences as trusted only if they are expected. If there are multiple audiences, check for azp; if it is present, verify that it equals your client ID.

Verify the signature and applicable time-related claims, including expiry, using the specification’s rules for the flow. If you sent a nonce, confirm that the returned value matches the transaction’s nonce. Reject a token that fails validation and stop any operation that depends on its claims. Decoding a JWT only reveals its contents; it does not establish its issuer, audience, signature validity, freshness, or nonce.

Handle multiple authorization servers explicitly

If one client can use more than one authorization server, protect against authorization-server mix-up. Process the authorization response’s iss value using the issuer-identification approach in RFC 9207, or use an alternative issuer value in an ID Token or a JWT-secured authorization response (JARM). If issuer signaling is unavailable, distinct redirect URIs for different authorization servers are an alternative. Do not let a generic callback silently decide which server to trust based only on untrusted response data.

Check these failure-prone details before release

  • PKCE downgrade or omission: Confirm that the server supports PKCE and enforces the challenge-verifier pair. A verifier alone is not a substitute for a challenge in the authorization request.
  • Transaction value reuse: Ensure each authorization request gets fresh PKCE and, when used, state and nonce values bound to that transaction and user agent.
  • Loose callback routing: Test that unregistered redirect URIs, partial matches, wildcard matches, and arbitrary post-callback destinations are rejected.
  • Unvalidated identity claims: Ensure the application does not act on claims until issuer, audience, signature, applicable time claims, and nonce have been checked.
  • Ambiguous issuer selection: If multiple authorization servers are configured, verify that the response is tied to the expected issuer using an explicit mix-up defense.

What to document for the deployment

Keep a deployment record of the trusted issuer and configured endpoints, redirect URIs, PKCE support and enforcement, client authentication method where applicable, signing keys and rotation process, accepted signing algorithms, and the ID Token validation rules. Also document how the chosen architecture handles tokens and what happens when validation fails. These choices are specific to the provider, client type, and deployment; the standards do not establish a universally best provider or one token-storage design for every application.
