Bose QuietComfort 2nd Gen: The better value for most buyers

For most buyers choosing between these two generations, the Bose QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen) look like the better value; the QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) are not redundant if you need their longer battery life, aptX Adaptive or more premium design. The standard model shares Bose Immersive Audio modes and key everyday features, while costing less at launch. That launch-price gap is historical, though, not a guarantee of what either pair costs now.

Which models are being compared?

This comparison is between the Bose QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen), announced in August 2026, and the QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen), announced in September 2025. They are not the older original QuietComfort or first-generation Ultra models. Bose’s announcement of the Ultra 2nd Gen establishes its identity and timing, but is not independent evidence of performance.

How much did each model cost at launch?

Model US launch price UK launch price Australia launch price
QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen) $359 £299 AU$549.99, reported as about AU$550 by What Hi-Fi
QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) $450 £450 AU$700

These are reported launch prices, not current offers. In the US, the initial difference was $91; in the UK it was £151, and in Australia about AU$150 using the rounded standard-model price. Check current prices in your region before deciding: retailer discounts can change the value equation.

Sources: TechRadar’s September 19, 2026 report lists the standard model at $359 / £299 / AU$549.99; What Hi-Fi’s comparison rounds that Australian price to AU$550 and gives Ultra 2 launch prices.

What do you get for the extra money?

Battery life

Battery life is the clearest functional advantage for Ultra 2. What Hi-Fi lists it at up to 30 hours with ANC on, 45 hours with ANC off and 23 hours using Immersive modes. The standard model is listed at 24 hours with ANC on and 18 hours with Immersive modes. TechRadar also reports 24 hours for the standard pair with ANC on. These are listed durations, not a promise that every listener will get the same runtime.

Wireless audio and connectivity

The standard model supports Bluetooth 5.4, AAC and SBC codecs, multipoint connections and Google Fast Pair. Ultra 2 adds aptX Adaptive, which is relevant only if your playback device supports it; What Hi-Fi describes compatible-source wireless streaming up to 24-bit/96kHz. Both support multipoint and Bose app control. The standard model also shares Bose Immersive Audio modes, so spatial audio alone does not require buying Ultra 2.

What Hi-Fi notes that the usefulness of Immersive Audio varies by mode. Treat the feature as a listening option to try, rather than a guaranteed improvement for every track or listener.

Materials and controls

Both pairs fold for storage. Ultra 2 has a polished-metal design and a capacitive touch strip; the standard model uses tactile buttons and, according to What Hi-Fi, comes in a wider range of finishes. If you prefer physical buttons or care more about color choice than premium trim, the standard model may suit you better. If materials and touch controls matter, Ultra 2 retains a tangible distinction.

Is the QuietComfort 2nd Gen good enough for noise cancellation and sound?

Published assessments support the standard model as a serious alternative, but they are not all the same kind of evidence. RTINGS’ September 1, 2026 roundup update describes the standard model’s ANC as comparable to Ultra 2’s. What Hi-Fi calls Ultra 2’s ANC excellent, while its comparison page says it had not yet tested the standard QuietComfort 2nd Gen and could not make a definitive value judgment pending testing.

TechRadar reviewer Tom Bedford says he used the standard pair for several weeks, including on flights, trains and in cities. He praised comfort, sound and spatial audio, while criticizing battery life, build feel and limited EQ options. His verdict was that they “sound great and feel comfortable to wear, but there are a few rough edges which you wouldn’t expect from cans of this price.” Those are his review impressions, not a controlled direct comparison with Ultra 2.

RTINGS’ assessment and TechRadar’s hands-on review make the standard pair plausible for buyers prioritizing comfort, ANC, sound and price. They do not establish that it beats Ultra 2 in every situation, or that the two have identical noise cancellation.

Which Bose headphones should you choose?

Choose QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen) if

  • You want Bose Immersive Audio modes and everyday features without paying extra for Ultra’s premium design.
  • You prefer tactile buttons, or want the broader finish range described by What Hi-Fi.
  • You can recharge more often and the listed 24-hour ANC-on runtime is sufficient for your use.
  • You find the standard model meaningfully cheaper than Ultra 2 at the prices available to you now.

Choose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) if

  • You value the longer listed battery life, especially the 45-hour figure with ANC off.
  • You have a compatible source and want aptX Adaptive support.
  • You prefer its polished-metal finish and capacitive touch strip.
  • The current price difference is small enough that those advantages are worth paying for.

What the comparison can—and cannot—establish

The evidence points to a standard model that carries over several important conveniences and spatial-audio features, with Ultra 2 retaining specific advantages in battery, codec support and finish. But the available reviews do not amount to a controlled head-to-head test: TechRadar reports hands-on use of the standard pair, What Hi-Fi disclosed that it had not yet tested that model, and RTINGS offers an ANC comparison in a roundup. Read the performance claims in that context.
