What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Yes—if you use a compatible Windows PC and do not need a custom boot setup, keep Secure Boot enabled. It helps stop untrusted software from loading before Windows starts. It is a focused startup safeguard, not a malware scanner or a guarantee that everything on the PC is safe.
What Secure Boot protects
Secure Boot is a UEFI firmware feature. Before handing control to the operating system, the firmware checks boot software against its Secure Boot trust policy. Microsoft describes it as helping prevent malicious software from loading when a Windows PC starts (Microsoft Support: Windows 11 and Secure Boot).

This matters because malicious code that runs before the operating system can interfere with startup and may be harder to detect. Secure Boot restricts which boot components can run; it does not inspect every file or application after Windows is running.
Where its protection ends
Secure Boot establishes trust at the firmware-to-bootloader stage. Windows Trusted Boot continues the startup checks after the bootloader begins, verifying the Windows kernel and other startup components (Microsoft Learn: Secure the Windows boot process). Neither feature should be treated as a substitute for broader operating-system security, updates, or careful handling of software.

How to check whether it is on
Use Windows System Information
- Open Start, type
System Information, and open the app (the executable isMsinfo32.exe). - In System Summary, find Secure Boot State. It reports whether the feature is on, off, or unsupported in the current configuration.
Use PowerShell for a technical check
Microsoft documents the Confirm-SecureBootUEFI and Get-SecureBootUEFI cmdlets for checking Secure Boot status and configuration. These are intended for UEFI systems; a Legacy BIOS/CSM configuration may not support the check (Microsoft Learn: Secure Boot key creation and management guidance).
How to open the Secure Boot setting
Windows can restart directly into your PC’s firmware interface. The exact labels for the Secure Boot control vary by manufacturer, so follow the computer maker’s instructions before changing anything.

- Open Settings > System > Recovery.
- Under Advanced startup, select Restart now.
- Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > UEFI Firmware Settings > Restart.
- In the firmware interface, locate Secure Boot and check its current state. Change it only if you understand the implications and have the manufacturer’s guidance for your model.
If UEFI Firmware Settings is missing, consult the manufacturer’s documentation for another way into firmware settings. Microsoft’s route and upgrade guidance are documented in its Windows 11 and Secure Boot article.
Why Secure Boot may be unavailable
A PC booting in Legacy BIOS or Compatibility Support Module (CSM) mode may not offer Secure Boot in its current setup. Microsoft says UEFI should be the first or only boot mode for Secure Boot. Switching modes is not a harmless universal fix: an operating system installed in Legacy mode may depend on that configuration. Check your manufacturer’s instructions and your installation setup before changing the boot mode.

When to leave it on, customize it, or turn it off
| Choice | What it means | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|
| Leave enabled | Firmware continues to enforce its configured trust policy, helping block boot components that are not trusted. | Typical Windows use on a compatible UEFI PC, with no requirement for a different bootloader. |
| Configure a narrower or custom trust set | A trusted signature or firmware trust-database configuration may allow a non-Microsoft or custom bootloader to run while retaining policy checks. | When the intended operating system or bootloader requires a specific trust configuration and the device supports it. |
| Disable | Boot software outside the Secure Boot trust policy may be allowed; the bootkit protection from Secure Boot is removed. | Only when a necessary boot setup cannot be made to work through supported trust configuration and the device’s instructions support the change. |
Microsoft’s boot-process guidance describes using a certified bootloader, adding a custom bootloader signature to UEFI’s trust database, or disabling Secure Boot for non-Microsoft bootloaders (Microsoft Learn: Secure the Windows boot process). Linux support depends on the distribution and the firmware; do not assume every installation will boot unchanged with Secure Boot enabled.
Before altering a working setup, check whether the change is supported for your device and intended operating systems, and how to recover if the PC stops booting. There is no single safe configuration for every custom dual-boot or bootloader arrangement.

Secure Boot and Windows 11 eligibility
Microsoft distinguishes Secure Boot capability from enabled status in its Windows 11 upgrade guidance: the stated requirement for a Windows 10 PC is that it be Secure Boot capable, with UEFI/BIOS enabled; Microsoft recommends enabling Secure Boot for better security. A PC’s upgrade eligibility therefore does not, by itself, tell you that Secure Boot is currently on. Check the device’s status in Windows rather than inferring it from eligibility.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSecure Boot certificate updates in 2026
Microsoft says Secure Boot certificates issued in 2011 begin expiring in June 2026, and that supported Windows versions receive updates automatically. Its guidance also describes updated certificate configuration for Windows 11 version 25H2 and later OEM devices. The update path depends on Windows version, firmware, and manufacturer support; consult Microsoft’s current Secure Boot certificate expiration and CA updates guidance and your PC maker’s information for your specific model.
