To harden an Arch Linux cloud server with UFW, first verify your SSH port, trusted management addresses, IPv4 and IPv6 exposure, and recovery route. Add and check the SSH allowance before enabling the firewall, then test a second connection. Fail2ban can add temporary bans for repeated log-detected activity, but it is a secondary control—not a replacement for a sound firewall policy or secure SSH authentication.
What UFW and Fail2ban each do
UFW is a host firewall interface for managing netfilter rules. It applies default policies and explicit rules for services and traffic. Fail2ban monitors logs for repeated suspicious behavior and can ask a firewall action to block source addresses temporarily. They address different problems and are not interchangeable.

Inventory SSH access and recovery before changing rules
Before enabling UFW remotely, write down the SSH daemon’s actual listening port and the source CIDRs you trust for administration. Check which public IPv4 and IPv6 addresses are exposed, and identify an out-of-band console or other recovery route. Provider-side filtering is a separate layer from the host firewall.
- Keep an existing administrative SSH session open while applying changes.
- Plan to test a fresh second SSH connection before closing the original session.
- Check the provider’s current documentation for its firewall or security-group behavior; it varies by provider.
Install UFW and set a minimal inbound policy
ArchWiki’s UFW guidance describes installing the ufw package and enabling ufw.service. It advises against simultaneously enabling iptables.service and the corresponding IPv6 service as competing managers. Use the service and firewall setup appropriate to the host, and understand interactions before enabling another rule manager.

The UFW manual describes installed defaults of deny incoming, deny routed traffic, and allow outgoing, while UFW itself remains disabled until enabled. Local changes can alter those defaults, so inspect the host rather than assuming its policy.
- Check the actual SSH listener. Determine the port used by sshd. If it is not the standard SSH port, create a rule for that exact port instead of assuming the SSH application profile matches.
- Allow only required inbound services. Make the SSH allowance and any other needed service rules before enabling UFW. Where appropriate, UFW’s
limitrule can rate-limit repeated connection attempts; use the correct port when SSH is nonstandard. - Enable the firewall only after reviewing the rules. Keep your current session open and make a second fresh SSH connection to test access.
For example, a standard-port SSH allowance can be expressed as ufw allow 22/tcp; replace 22 with the verified listener port when necessary. Do not copy a standard-port example without checking the server. UFW supports dry-run syntax as well as direction, protocol, port, source, destination, and comments; use those options to express and review rules precisely.

Review UFW rules and verify access
Rule order matters: UFW applies the first matching rule, so specific rules should come before general ones. Its status report shows the firewall state and UFW-managed user rules, but does not include every rule from /etc/ufw. Use ufw show raw when you need to inspect the broader underlying ruleset.

- Confirm the intended SSH port and other required services appear in the effective rules.
- Test a new SSH connection from an allowed management source before ending the original session.
- Check provider-side filtering separately; a working host rule does not establish that the provider permits the traffic.
ArchWiki cautions administrators to take particular care when enabling UFW on a remote system because existing connections may be lost. Treat remote firewall changes as changes requiring a recovery plan, not as harmless toggles.

Add Fail2ban only when its extra control is useful
Fail2ban can help when relevant authentication events are logged and you want repeated attempts to trigger temporary source-address bans. It depends on a running daemon and usable logs. ArchWiki notes that it often adds little for SSH configured for public-key authentication only, so prioritize secure authentication and limiting SSH exposure where feasible.
Use a local jail configuration
ArchWiki’s setup uses the fail2ban package and fail2ban.service. Put local settings in /etc/fail2ban/jail.local or a file under /etc/fail2ban/jail.d/, rather than editing the package’s jail.conf. The SSH jail is disabled in ArchWiki’s example, so explicitly enable it if you choose to use it.

Match the jail’s log backend to where SSH events actually land. ArchWiki shows a systemd backend example and notes that LogLevel VERBOSE may be needed for password failures to be logged fully. Any retry limit, find window, ban duration, and trusted-address list shown in configuration examples are starting examples, not universal settings; choose values appropriate to your access pattern and logs. Add only genuinely trusted addresses to ignoreip.

If UFW manages host firewall rules, configure the Fail2ban jail to use its UFW action; ArchWiki identifies banaction = ufw as an option. The upstream UFW action states that UFW must already be enabled. Check that the action exists in the installed Fail2ban package and inspect the effective jail configuration, since action defaults can differ by installed version.

Check service and jail status with:
fail2ban-client status
fail2ban-client status sshdBefore relying on bans, verify an intentional test ban and unban through Fail2ban status and the firewall rules. Do not assume that an enabled jail is operating correctly merely because the service started.

IPv4 and IPv6
The UFW manual says IPv6 is enabled by default. Check rules and exposure for both address families: allowing or blocking a service over IPv4 does not by itself establish the policy for an exposed IPv6 listener. ArchWiki notes IPv6 support in Fail2ban since version 0.10 and says firewall configuration must also be adapted for IPv6.
Docker and netfilter rule ownership
ArchWiki warns that Docker in standard mode writes its own iptables rules and ignores UFW rules. As a result, a UFW default-deny policy does not necessarily control ports published by containers. A Docker host needs a separate review of packet paths and rule ordering. More generally, avoid enabling multiple services that independently manage netfilter rules without understanding how their policies interact.
Keep temporary bans from becoming an access risk
Fail2ban’s decisions depend on a daemon and successful logging. ArchWiki also warns that an attacker who knows an administrator’s address may spoof packets in a way that causes that address to be banned. Keep an independent recovery route, and make sure every address in ignoreip is genuinely trusted. For SSH, disabling password logins in favor of key authentication and restricting access to trusted locations where feasible are stronger baseline measures than relying on bans alone.
