They organize different things, so they can complement one another: Bot Mode gives agents a recognizable conversational presence, while Kanban records tasks, ownership, and progress.
What Bot Mode is for
Bot Mode is a desktop interface for Hermes profiles, not a separate kind of agent. Each Bot is a profile with a role, model, memory, skills, and avatar. The interface brings named Bots, their ongoing conversations, and routines into one view; the underlying profile configuration and data remain in the established profile structure and are also available through the CLI. The official Hermes Bot Mode guide says the feature is built into the desktop app and on by default.

Choose it when you want to return to the same specialist chat, distinguish several agents, schedule recurring work, or let Bots communicate in group chats. Its organizing unit is the profile and its conversations—not a task record with an assignee and lifecycle.

Hermes Kanban is a multi-profile, multi-project task board. A person or orchestrator profile can create and assign tasks. A dispatcher embedded in the gateway can claim ready work and launch the assigned profile as a worker. Workers receive a dedicated kanban_* toolset to read task context and update task state.

That structure suits work that needs clear ownership, status, dependencies, comments, handoffs, or visibility into blocked and review work. The official Hermes Kanban guide documents hermes kanban init to initialize a board and hermes gateway start to run the gateway-hosted dispatcher.
Dispatcher setup and defaults
The guide documents the gateway dispatcher as enabled by default, with a 60-second dispatch interval. This is a documented configuration default, not a guarantee that every installation is configured identically or a measure of task performance. If a chat profile should orchestrate Kanban, enable the relevant toolset for that profile and platform. Dispatcher-owned workers receive their task lifecycle tools automatically.

How to decide—and when to use both
Choose Bot Mode for an ongoing agent relationship
Start with Bot Mode if the main question is, “Which specialist do I want to talk to, and how do I return to that conversation?” It makes distinct profiles easier to recognize and provides a home for their ongoing chats and routines.
Choose Kanban for work that must be tracked
Start with Kanban if the main question is, “What needs doing, who owns it, and what state is it in?” Its task records and lifecycle are the better fit for a stream of work that must remain visible across projects or handoffs.

Use both when people need specialists and a shared queue
Combining them is useful when a team wants persistent specialist identities for interaction and a board for concrete work. For example, a person can keep returning to a named specialist in Bot Mode while Kanban tracks project tasks, assignments, and review status. This is a practical synthesis of the documented feature scopes; Hermes documentation does not say that enabling one feature automatically configures the other.

Hermes documents slash commands for both the interactive CLI and messaging integrations. Supported messaging platforms can separate administrator and regular-user commands, with access controlled by allowlists and platform configuration. Kanban also requires the appropriate toolset for a profile and platform that should orchestrate work.

Consequently, a command shown in the docs may not be available to every user or in every chat. Hermes lists integrations including Telegram, Discord, and Slack, but command availability and permissions are not necessarily identical across platforms. Check the current Hermes platform documentation and your local configuration before relying on a command from a particular messaging surface.
