Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

The warning is specific to the HFS v2 line; Rejetto says HFS v3 has not been affected by those issues. For a replacement, choose HFS v3 for a lightweight browser-based server, Nextcloud for managed sharing links and collaboration, or an SFTP workflow for authenticated transfers.
Start by identifying which HFS version you have
Rejetto’s warning concerns HFS v2.3–2.4. The project describes a vulnerability that could let an attacker control the computer and says version 2 has no official fix. Treat an installation on that release line as unsafe to expose to untrusted users, and plan a migration rather than assuming a firewall or password makes the unfixed software safe.

Do not apply that statement indiscriminately to HFS v3. Rejetto says v3 has not been affected by the identified v2 issues. That is the project’s statement about those issues, not an independent security audit or a guarantee that every v3 setup is safe.

Compare the practical alternatives
| Option | Best fit | Relevant capabilities | What to manage |
|---|---|---|---|
| HFS v3 | A lightweight server that exposes selected local files through a browser | HTTPS, accounts, resumable transfers, bandwidth throttling, plugins, and support for several operating systems, according to the HFS project repository | Review configuration defaults and limit which files are exposed. The repository says localhost admin access does not require a login by default. |
| Nextcloud | Managed public links, internal permissions, or collaboration and federation | Public-link passwords and expiry dates; adjustable rights on internal shares; federation with Nextcloud and ownCloud instances | Keep the installation on a supported major version and apply its maintenance releases. |
| SFTP workflow | Authenticated file transfer or access to an existing SFTP server | Password and public-key authentication; Nextcloud can also mount a remote SFTP directory | Decide whether a file-transfer client or command-line workflow meets users’ needs; an SFTP storage backend is not itself a public-link interface. |
| ownCloud | An organization evaluating another self-hosted sharing platform | Official security advisories and processes are available for its products | Evaluate the exact product line and version against current advisories; advisories are version-specific. |
Choose by how people need to receive files
Choose HFS v3 for a simple browser-facing server
HFS v3 is the closest fit if your main requirement is to make selected files available from a lightweight server rather than introduce a broader collaboration platform. Its listed capabilities include HTTPS and user accounts. Before making it reachable beyond the local machine, review its configuration, restrict exposed directories, and consider the project’s documented default that localhost administration does not require a login.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Choose Nextcloud when sharing controls matter
Nextcloud’s documented controls cover two common cases: password-protected, expiring public links for people outside the installation, and adjustable share rights for internal users. It also documents federation with Nextcloud and ownCloud instances. These features help manage sharing, but they do not by themselves establish that a deployment is secure; access policy and maintenance still matter.
Choose SFTP when transfer authentication is the priority
SFTP is a better match when each recipient can use an authenticated transfer workflow, or when files already live on an SFTP server. Nextcloud’s SFTP backend documentation describes password and public-key authentication and mounting a remote directory; the Nextcloud 35 Administration Manual identifies port 22 as the default SFTP port. That backend is a way to connect storage, not a substitute for Nextcloud’s public-link sharing interface.

Evaluate ownCloud by product and release
ownCloud’s official security materials list advisories for particular versions of its Classic and Infinite Scale products. Check the current advisory entries for the specific product and release you intend to deploy. The available information does not support a blanket claim that ownCloud is either secure or insecure.
Plan for maintenance, not just initial setup
Self-hosted software remains the operator’s responsibility after installation. Nextcloud’s Administration Manual says each major release receives maintenance releases for one year; it also explains that end-of-life releases stop receiving maintenance and security corrections. Confirm the support status of the release you plan to run and keep up with its maintenance releases.

- Use only releases that are still supported by their project.
- Limit access to the files and administrative interfaces users actually need.
- Use link passwords, expiry dates, or authenticated transfers where appropriate, while treating them as access controls rather than a replacement for updates and sound deployment.
- Recheck current release and security information when selecting or upgrading a version, especially for version-specific advisories.
A straightforward migration decision
- Check the installed release. If it is HFS v2.3–2.4, treat it as an unfixed risk and plan to move away from it.
- Define the sharing workflow. Use HFS v3 when a lightweight browser server is the goal, Nextcloud when link controls or collaboration are needed, or SFTP when authenticated transfer is sufficient.
- Review the target release before deployment. Check the project’s current security information and support status for the exact product and version.
- Restrict access and keep it maintained. Configure exposed files and user rights deliberately, then apply supported maintenance releases.
