Second Livestock was a proposed virtual-reality world for chickens, not a tested animal-welfare technology. Its creator, Austin Stewart, described it as a design project meant to prompt discussion about how people house farm animals. A 2017 account said putting the headsets on chickens would still require university committee approval; it reported no animal trial or evidence that the idea improved welfare.
What was Second Livestock?
Second Livestock was a concept by Austin Stewart, whom Futurism identified as the project’s founder and an associate professor at Iowa State University’s College of Design. Stewart said the project was intended “to get people to have a conversation about animal husbandry.” He also likened the animals’ confinement to human life in enclosed spaces: “We live in boxes, just like the chickens we eat.” Futurism’s May 16, 2017 coverage linked its interview with Stewart to Vox.

The proposal imagined chickens wearing VR headgear while physically confined. The virtual setting was described as an open landscape with simulated food and water and no predators; Futurism characterized it as a multiplayer, game-like environment without AI bots. Those details describe the imagined experience, not a system observed in use.

Was the chicken VR headset tested?
No animal test is reported in the 2017 account. Futurism said putting headgear on chickens remained an idea and would require approval from committees at Stewart’s university. The article does not say that chickens wore the system, accepted the virtual world, or experienced a welfare benefit. It also does not establish whether a trial or commercial version came later.

Could virtual reality make confined chickens happier?
The available account does not answer that question. It provides no measured welfare outcomes, named study, or comparison between chickens using VR and chickens kept under other conditions. A virtual view of open space is not evidence that an animal experiences more physical space or can perform the behaviors enabled by it.
Stewart raised the uncertainty himself: “Will animals actually accept a virtual world as readily as we do, or is there some level of intelligence or imagination that needs to happen where we can suspend disbelief more readily than a chicken can?” His answer was: “I don’t know.”

What did Stewart say about free-range chickens?
Futurism quoted Stewart saying research suggested free-range chickens could show signs of stress and suffer injuries such as broken bones or legs. The article does not identify the underlying research, describe its methods, or give figures. These claims should therefore be understood as Stewart’s remarks in that interview, not as independently established comparative findings from the article.

A meaningful assessment would need to go beyond whether chickens could wear a headset. It would have to examine physical housing and space, opportunities for natural behavior, and clear measures of stress and injury. Any animal study would also need appropriate ethical review. The 2017 coverage supplies no results on those questions, so it cannot show that virtual scenery compensates for physical confinement or is a humane alternative.
