Meta says people can use Threads without a profile to browse content and search for accounts. Meta also says that people using Threads this way cannot create posts or interact with content. That is the most official material establishes. It does not show that every post appears in a signed-out search, how many results appear or how they are ordered, or whether the page looks the same in every country and browser.
The title uses the word “scraping,” but this article covers what a signed-out visitor can see, not automated collection. Automated access to a platform raises separate questions about its terms, which the Threads documentation cited here does not address.

What Meta documents about profile-free use
Meta’s description of using Threads without a profile is the only official statement that directly covers signed-out use. It lists the following:
- Browsing content. Meta says profile-free users can browse Threads content.
- Searching for accounts. Meta says profile-free users can search for accounts. This is account search, not a statement about keyword search of posts.
- Sharing and reporting. Meta says profile-free users can share content by copying a link or using platform sharing, and can report Threads content.
- Limits. Meta says profile-free users cannot create a post or interact with content.
This description appears in Meta’s Newsroom post “Introducing Threads: A New Way to Share With Text,” in a December 2023 statement. Meta framed it in the context of profile-free use in the EU. Nothing in the cited material extends that eligibility to other regions, so readers outside the EU should not assume the same experience applies to them.

What the later feature announcements do and do not establish
Several later Meta announcements describe Threads search and web features. They are easy to conflate with signed-out behavior, but each one has a narrower scope.
| Meta source and date | What it says | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| “Introducing Threads: A New Way to Share With Text,” September 7, 2023 update | Keyword search was rolling out on mobile and web in English and Spanish, with Argentina, India, Mexico, the UK, and the US given as examples. | Current availability in each country, and not stated: whether keyword search works without a login. |
| “Introducing Threads: A New Way to Share With Text,” December 2023 statement | Profile-free use in the EU allows browsing, account search, sharing, and reporting, but not posting or interacting. | Eligibility outside the EU, and not stated: what a signed-out results page displays. |
| “New Features for the Threads Web Experience,” April 2025 | Threads web users can add columns for favorite searches, profiles, tags, saved and liked posts, activity, and insights, and can use custom feeds. | A list of signed-out search-page elements. Not stated: whether any of these columns is available without a login. |
| “It’s Now Easier to See More Fediverse Content on Threads,” June 2025 | Users can search for fediverse profiles, for example by entering a federated handle and finding a matching profile. | Whether logged-out visitors see federated results. Not stated. |
The most recent Meta material cited here is dated June 2025. It does not confirm how the signed-out page behaves in October 2026.

What official sources leave open
None of the cited Meta material answers the following questions about a signed-out search:
- Whether results include full posts, excerpts, replies, or only account matches.
- How many results appear, and how they are ranked.
- Whether results vary by country, browser, session, or query.
- When a login prompt appears, and after how many searches or clicks.
- Whether the layout stays the same over time.
Any answer to these questions would describe one observed page under specific conditions, not a fixed rule.

Checking the signed-out page yourself
A manual check produces a dated snapshot for one set of conditions. It is not a complete map of what Threads shows. Use the following steps:
- Confirm there is no active session. Sign out of any Threads or Instagram account in the browser, or open a private browsing window. Confirm you are not logged in before you search.
- Record the conditions. Note the date and time, your country and region, the browser and its version, and whether you are on the web or the mobile app.
- Run a fixed set of queries. Use the same three searches each time: one account name, one plain keyword, and one hashtag-style topic.
- Log what appears for each query. Note whether a results list appears, which result types are shown (accounts, posts, tags), whether post text is visible in full, and whether a login prompt appears and at which step.
- Repeat in a second browser. Run the same queries again on a different browser or device, then compare the logs.
- Save dated screenshots. Keep the images with their timestamps so the result can be compared with later checks.
Treat the outcome as a snapshot for that date and location. A different country, browser, or day can produce a different page.

Why automated collection needs a separate check
Meta’s descriptions cover what a person can do in a profile-free session. They do not state whether automated requests for pages are permitted. A page that displays content to a browser is not the same as permission to collect that content in bulk. Before writing code that requests Threads pages, read the platform’s current terms and check whether it publishes an access option for the data you need.
