Before changing ranking weights, build a repeatable benchmark: representative queries, query-specific relevance judgments, a defined metric, and a comparison of the current and candidate rankings. A better result for one query is not evidence of an overall improvement; it may come with regressions elsewhere.
Start with a representative query set
Collect typical queries from the application and include the meaningful differences in what people are trying to do: query types, intents, and user contexts. For each query, record the information need it represents. A relevance judgment is only meaningful in relation to that need; the same document may be useful for one query and irrelevant for another.

Elastic’s ranking evaluation documentation describes the core ingredients as a document collection, typical requests, and ratings for documents associated with each request. It does not prescribe a universally sufficient number of queries, so choose coverage based on the range and risk of your product’s search tasks rather than an arbitrary count.

Write a rubric that explains what counts as relevant for the user’s task. Use binary labels when the distinction is genuinely clear, such as whether a result answers a specific lookup. Use graded labels when the difference between an excellent, partial, and weak result matters to the experience.

Graded scales express more nuance, but reviewers may interpret scale points differently, and high grades contribute more strongly to graded metrics. Give reviewers concrete examples of each label and have them discuss borderline cases before scoring a large set. That calibration is a practical safeguard, not a substitute for documenting the rubric.
Store each judgment with its query and, where useful, the reason for the label. Do not treat a document’s rating as a universal property detached from the information need.

Version a fixed baseline
Create a versioned set of queries and judged documents, then score both the current ranking and the candidate ranking against that same set. This makes the comparison repeatable: a weight change is being tested against a stable reference rather than a changing collection of examples.
Recommended Free Tools
Review results both in aggregate and by query class. A strong average can conceal a meaningful loss for an important task, while an improvement on the query that prompted the change can hide damage to other types of searches. Elastic’s guidance emphasizes evaluating across a representative suite for precisely this reason.
Choose a metric that matches the user’s task
No single metric answers every relevance question. Choose the one that reflects what a successful search session means, state the cutoff, and document how labels and unjudged results are handled.
| Metric | What it emphasizes | Useful when |
|---|---|---|
| Precision@k | How many of the first k results are judged relevant. It does not distinguish where relevant results appear within that window. | Users need a high share of useful results near the top, and exact ordering among them is less important. |
| Recall@k | How much of the judged relevant set appears among the first k results. | The task is to find as many of the known useful items as possible within a limited result window. |
| MRR | The rank of the first relevant result. | Success largely means finding one satisfactory answer quickly. |
| DCG/NDCG | Graded relevance and result position, giving greater value to highly relevant documents that appear earlier. | Both the quality level and order of results matter. |
| MAP@k | Average precision across relevant results within a cutoff, aggregated across queries. | You want to assess the ranked placement of multiple relevant results across a query set. |
| Coverage@k | How many returned documents within the cutoff have relevance judgments. | You need to understand how much of the evaluated result window is actually covered by judgments. |
Elastic’s metric documentation and the OpenSearch Project’s search quality evaluation documentation describe these measures and their scope. Report the value of k explicitly: Precision@5 and Precision@20 evaluate different windows. Also say what relevance threshold makes a result count as relevant for a metric and how unjudged results are treated; those choices can change the meaning of a score.

Compare rankings and diagnose regressions
- Freeze the inputs: use the same query set, judgments, and evaluation settings for the current and candidate ranking.
- Run both rankings: calculate the chosen metric at the stated cutoff for the full suite.
- Inspect query-level changes: identify which queries improved, declined, or stayed level, then group those changes by task or intent.
- Investigate meaningful losses: inspect the changed results and judgments to determine whether the weight change caused the regression or exposed a gap in the test set.
- Apply a release rule appropriate to the risk: decide in advance what aggregate gain is worthwhile and what regression on a critical query group is unacceptable.
There is no universal release threshold or statistical-significance method established by the cited guidance. Set an operational rule that fits the consequences of errors and the volume and variability of your traffic; do not present a single favorable aggregate score as proof that every relevant task improved.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse behavior and generated labels as supporting evidence
Clicks, purchases, dwell time, and related behavior can help identify potentially useful results, but observed clicks are affected by exposure: users encounter highly ranked results more often. Elastic’s article on evaluating search query relevance with judgment lists discusses result shuffling and click models as possible ways to address position bias.

AI-generated labels can make judgment coverage easier to expand, but they may be biased or inconsistent. Compare them with a smaller, trusted set of human or subject-matter-expert judgments before relying on them. For high-impact ranking decisions, explicit judgments should remain the quality anchor; behavioral and generated labels are supplements that need validation.
Keep the same evaluation when ranking grows more complex
A two-stage system retrieves a candidate set first and then uses a more expensive reranker to reorder a smaller set. Learning to rank is an advanced option for teams with ample training data and a need for customized relevance tuning. Neither approach removes the need to measure whether results serve users’ information needs.
Elastic’s ranking and reranking documentation describes these approaches and the conditions for learning to rank. Preserve the query set, rubric, and baseline judgments as the system changes, so you can compare a reranker or learned model against the same quality reference used for weight tuning.
For teams using Elasticsearch, the official ranking evaluation API provides a way to evaluate judged requests. The Elastic Relevance Studio project describes a workflow for reviewing judgments and benchmarking strategies; check the project page for its current status before adopting it.
