For Nintendo 3DS-family systems, choose an SDHC or microSDHC card no larger than 32 GB; Nintendo does not consider SDXC or microSDXC cards compatible. Original 3DS, 3DS XL and 2DS models take full-size SD cards, while New Nintendo 3DS, New Nintendo 3DS XL and New Nintendo 2DS XL models take microSD cards. Match both the card type and physical size to your exact console.
Which card should you use for your 3DS?
Nintendo’s official compatibility guidance supports SDHC cards from 4 GB through 32 GB for original 3DS-family consoles, and microSDHC cards in the same capacity range for New 3DS-family consoles. Standard SD or microSD cards up to 2 GB are also listed as compatible. Nintendo says SDXC and microSDXC cards are not considered compatible.

| Console | Physical card size | Listed compatible capacities | Adapter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo 3DS XL, Nintendo 2DS | Full-size SD | Standard SD up to 2 GB; SDHC 4–32 GB | MiniSD or microSD requires an SD adapter, according to Nintendo. |
| New Nintendo 3DS, New Nintendo 3DS XL, New Nintendo 2DS XL | microSD | Standard microSD up to 2 GB; microSDHC 4–32 GB | No adapter for a microSD card. |
These compatibility ranges come from Nintendo’s SD and microSD compatibility page. A 32 GB SDHC card is the largest listed SDHC option for an original model; choose a 32 GB microSDHC card for a New model.

Why SDHC and SDXC are different
SDHC and SDXC are capacity standards, not simply different names for the same card. The SD Association defines SDHC as more than 2 GB through 32 GB and associates it with FAT32. SDXC covers more than 32 GB through 2 TB and uses exFAT, according to its capacity reference.

- Great choice for compact to mid-range point-and-shoot cameras
- Quick transfer speeds up to 140MB/s (Up to 140MB/s read speed engineered with proprietary technology to reach speeds beyond UHS-I 104MB/s, requires compatible devices capable of reaching such speeds. Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 128GB to store tons of pictures (1GB=1,000,000,000 bytes. Actual user storage less.)
- Exceptional video recording performance with UHS Speed Class 1 (U1) Class 10 rating for Full HD video (1080p) (UHS Speed Class 1 (U1) designates a performance option designed to support real time video recording with UHS enabled host devices. See consumers speed page on SanDisk site. Full HD (1920x1080) video support may vary based upon host device, file attributes, and other factors. Visit the SanDisk Video Knowledge Base for more information.)
- Compatible with SanDisk SD UHS-I card reader (sold separately)
That distinction explains why a larger SDXC card is not an officially supported substitute for an SDHC card in these consoles: Nintendo explicitly says SDXC and microSDXC are not considered compatible. The Nintendo guidance does not endorse reformatting an SDXC card as a workaround, so it should not be presented as a supported option.
What 3DS storage can hold
Nintendo says SD or microSD storage can hold photos taken on the system, music and downloaded software other than DSiWare. The data that can be saved varies by software title. Its support page gives potential-use examples of up to 300 software titles, 180 sound files, 3,000 photos and 3,000 music files; those are stated possibilities, not a promise that every card or collection will fit those totals. See Nintendo’s explanation of SD-card uses.

Check these details before buying
- Identify whether the console is an original model or a New model; the physical card size differs.
- Choose SDHC for a full-size SD slot or microSDHC for a microSD slot, staying within 4–32 GB.
- If using microSD in an original 3DS, 3DS XL or 2DS, Nintendo’s guidance requires an SD adapter.
- Do not choose SDXC or microSDXC as the officially compatible option. Nintendo’s compatibility page does not list a supported speed-class advantage, so speed claims should not outweigh card type and capacity.
