For YouTube Live, use the highest resolution your encoder and stable upload connection can sustain at YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrate—with bandwidth left over. For many creators, 720p or 1080p is the practical balance. Choose 4K when extra detail matters and your entire capture-to-upload chain can handle it; choose SD when bandwidth or reliability is the constraint. Resolution alone does not guarantee a sharp, uninterrupted stream, and viewers may watch a YouTube-transcoded version at a different resolution.
What SD, HD and 4K mean for a live stream
Resolution describes the number of pixels in the video frame. SD commonly refers to 480p; HD generally means 720p or 1080p; and 4K live streaming is 2160p. These labels do not specify frame rate: 1080p30 and 1080p60 have the same pixel dimensions but different motion smoothness and bitrate needs.

For a successful stream, resolution works together with frame rate, codec, encoder capability, bitrate and available upload bandwidth. YouTube receives the encoder’s stream and transcodes it into multiple playback formats, so viewers on different devices and connections can have different resolution options. The incoming resolution is not a promise that every viewer will see that resolution. YouTube’s live encoder settings list recommended ingest settings.

Which resolution should you choose?
| Resolution | When it fits | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| SD, such as 480p | Your upload capacity is limited, or keeping bandwidth use modest is the priority. | Less visible detail, especially on larger displays. Select an appropriate frame rate and bitrate from YouTube’s current guidance. |
| HD, 720p or 1080p | You want a balance of detail, motion and connection requirements. | Requirements vary substantially: 1080p60 needs more bitrate than 720p30. Choose frame rate as well as resolution. |
| 4K, 2160p | Fine detail is important and your source, encoder, network and YouTube settings all support the intended format. | It requires considerably more upload bandwidth than HD at YouTube’s recommended H.264 settings. YouTube does not offer its low-latency option at 2160p. |
Do not choose 4K simply because it is the largest number available. A stable 1080p stream is generally more useful than a higher-resolution stream that drops frames or disconnects. For fast movement, consider whether 60 fps is worth the extra bitrate; for a mostly static scene, 30 fps may meet your needs at a lower rate.

YouTube Live bitrate recommendations for H.264
The figures below are YouTube’s recommended live ingest bitrates for H.264, not upload-video recommendations or guarantees of stream quality. YouTube’s table gives different figures for other codecs, so do not apply these H.264 numbers to AV1 or H.265. Guidance accessed October 3, 2026; check YouTube’s current encoder settings before configuring a stream, since platform recommendations can change.
| Resolution and frame rate | YouTube recommended H.264 ingest bitrate |
|---|---|
| 480p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| 2160p at 30 fps | 42 Mbps |
| 2160p at 60 fps | 50 Mbps |
Codec choice changes the comparison. For example, YouTube lists 42 Mbps for 2160p30 H.264 versus 30 Mbps for 2160p30 AV1/H.265, and 10 Mbps for 1080p30 H.264 versus 10 Mbps for 1080p30 AV1/H.265. Use the row for your actual codec, resolution and frame rate in the platform’s current table.

How much upload speed do you need?
Compare the stream’s outbound bitrate with your upload capacity—not your download speed. YouTube recommends 20% upload bandwidth headroom beyond the combined bitrate of the primary and backup streams. That headroom helps account for network variation and other devices sharing the connection. If other people or services use the same network, their traffic can affect the capacity available to your stream. See YouTube’s streaming tips for its bandwidth guidance.
Recommended Free Tools
- Find the recommended ingest bitrate for your codec, resolution and frame rate in YouTube’s current settings table.
- If you send a backup stream, add its bitrate to the primary stream bitrate.
- Allow at least 20% additional upload bandwidth beyond that combined total, as YouTube recommends.
- Test the connection during the hours and on the network you will use for the event. If the upload is inconsistent, reduce resolution or frame rate and test again.
A speed test is a snapshot, not a guarantee that your connection will sustain the same rate throughout a live event. Leave capacity for network fluctuations and shared use rather than setting the encoder bitrate equal to the best upload result you have seen.

Settings and checks before you go live
YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a keyframe interval of two seconds (not exceeding four seconds), frame rates up to 60 fps, and Rec. 709 for SDR. Confirm that your encoder is configured for the stream you intend to send, then test before the event. YouTube’s instruction is direct: “Make sure that you test before you start your live stream.” Use representative movement and audio, and monitor stream health while live. Details are in YouTube’s encoder settings and streaming tips.
- Test motion: Include the kind of movement your actual stream will contain; a static test screen will not reveal every motion or encoding issue.
- Check audio: Confirm the audio is present and appropriately synchronized during the test.
- Watch stream health: Monitor the encoder and YouTube’s live interface for dropped frames, connection problems or other warnings.
- Check the whole path: For an HDMI source captured on a computer, verify that the source, capture device, host port, selected resolution and frame rate, HDR requirements and streaming software are compatible. A capture card is only relevant to workflows that need to bring an HDMI source into the computer; it is not a universal requirement for streaming in 4K.
As one specific example, Elgato lists its Game Capture 4K X with recording and passthrough up to 4K144 and compatibility with streaming software including OBS. That is a vendor specification for that product, not evidence that every 4K setup needs this card. Check the compatibility details for your own equipment before purchasing.

Does 4K live streaming cause more lag?
For YouTube, 2160p/4K uses normal latency optimized for quality; YouTube says its low-latency option is unavailable at that resolution. If interaction speed matters more than fine detail, choose a supported resolution and latency setting that fits the event rather than assuming 4K can use low latency. See YouTube’s live streaming guidance for current options.
Common resolution and stream problems
| Symptom | What to check | Practical adjustment |
|---|---|---|
| Stream drops frames or disconnects | Whether sustained upload capacity is sufficient for the primary and backup bitrates plus headroom, and whether the network is shared. | Test under representative network conditions; lower resolution, frame rate or bitrate according to YouTube’s current guidance. |
| Stream looks soft despite a high resolution setting | Whether the encoder bitrate suits the selected resolution, frame rate and codec; whether the source itself contains the expected detail. | Use the correct row in YouTube’s codec-specific ingest table and test with representative content. |
| Viewers cannot select the incoming resolution | YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple playback formats, and available choices can vary by viewer and device. | Check the stream’s playback options rather than assuming the ingest resolution will be available to every viewer. |
| 4K has too much delay for an interactive event | YouTube’s 2160p option uses normal latency optimized for quality, not its low-latency option. | Consider HD or another resolution compatible with the latency needs of the event. |
| HDMI source cannot be captured at the intended format | Source output, capture hardware, computer port, HDR and software support. | Confirm the complete compatibility chain before purchasing or selecting a capture resolution. |
Copyright and reused content still matter
Resolution does not determine whether content is permitted on YouTube. Before streaming, make sure you have the rights needed for the video, music and other material you use, and review YouTube’s applicable policies. Repeatedly looping a recording does not itself establish that you have permission to broadcast it or that it meets platform rules. Review the copyright safety checklist before using prerecorded material.
