How to Loop MP4 Files on YouTube Live Without Pre-Converting Them

Use OBS Media Source to loop a single MP4 or VLC Video for a playlist. The file need not be pre-converted, but OBS still encodes the live output for YouTube.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To loop one local MP4 on YouTube Live without first converting the file, add it to OBS Studio as a Media Source and enable Loop. OBS plays the file in the scene, but the outgoing broadcast still has to be encoded using settings YouTube accepts. “Without re-encoding” here means no separate pre-stream conversion—not bit-for-bit pass-through to YouTube.

Loop one MP4 in OBS

  1. Create or select a scene: In OBS Studio, choose an existing scene or create one for the broadcast.
  2. Add the file: In the Sources panel, select + > Media Source. Give the source a name, then choose the local MP4 file. OBS lists MP4 among its supported video formats.
  3. Enable looping: Turn on Loop in the Media Source properties. OBS will replay the file when playback completes.
  4. Check picture and sound: Confirm the video appears in the preview, and that its audio is present in the OBS mixer. Adjust the scene layout or audio level if needed.
  5. Connect OBS to YouTube Live: In YouTube Studio, open the live control room and set up a stream. In OBS, configure the YouTube service and use the stream key from YouTube. Treat the key like a password; do not share or publish it.
  6. Start and verify the broadcast: Start streaming from OBS, then check YouTube Live Control Room for the incoming picture, audio, and stream health before presenting the stream to viewers.

OBS’s documentation establishes that Media Source can play supported media and loop it; it does not guarantee every MP4 will decode smoothly on every computer or OBS build. If playback stutters or fails, see the troubleshooting section below.

Loop a playlist of MP4 files

For several files, use OBS’s VLC Video source rather than adding one Media Source per file if you want playlist controls. OBS documents Loop Playlist and Shuffle Playlist for this source.

  1. Install VLC media player. OBS requires VLC for the VLC Video source; if you use 64-bit OBS, OBS specifies that VLC must also be 64-bit.
  2. In OBS, add a source with + > VLC Video, then add the MP4 files to its playlist.
  3. Leave Loop Playlist enabled to repeat the list after the final file. Enable Shuffle Playlist only if you want the playback order randomized.
  4. Preview the playlist and check its audio in the mixer before streaming.
Need OBS source What it does Dependency
Repeat one local MP4 Media Source Loop replays the file when playback finishes. No VLC dependency is stated for Media Source.
Cycle through several files VLC Video Playlist controls include Loop Playlist and Shuffle Playlist. VLC must be installed; VLC and OBS architectures must match for 64-bit OBS.

What “without re-encoding” means for a live stream

There are two different operations that are easy to conflate:

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Pre-conversion: Converting or exporting the MP4 before loading it into OBS. The workflow above does not require a separate conversion when the file plays correctly.
  • Live encoding: Creating the encoded video and audio stream that OBS sends to YouTube. This still happens; YouTube’s live ingest specifications require compatible encoder output.

Do not assume OBS passes the MP4’s original compressed data straight through to YouTube. Media Source plays video inside an OBS scene, while YouTube’s ingest requirements describe the encoded live output. YouTube also transcodes live streams into viewer formats; that downstream processing is separate from whether you converted the source file beforehand.

OBS output settings YouTube expects

For a conventional OBS broadcast, use RTMPS, YouTube’s recommended secure extension to RTMP. YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and support for up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. The appropriate video bitrate varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so choose it from YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions table rather than treating one bitrate as universal.

  • Keyframes: Set the encoder’s keyframe interval to two seconds where the setting is expressed in seconds. Do not exceed four seconds.
  • Rate control: Use CBR for RTMP/RTMPS output, as listed in YouTube’s guidance.
  • Video codec and frame rate: Use a codec supported by the chosen ingest workflow and a frame rate no higher than 60 fps under the cited RTMP/RTMPS settings.
  • Stereo audio: YouTube lists 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps for stereo.
  • 5.1 audio: YouTube lists 48 kHz and 384 kbps; over RTMP/RTMPS, its guidance limits 5.1 support to AAC.

Before relying on a long or important broadcast, test with representative video motion and audio, then inspect stream health in YouTube Live Control Room. A still image or silent opening may not reveal issues that appear once the MP4 reaches a more demanding section.

Why RTMPS is the practical choice—and when HLS is not

RTMPS is the straightforward choice for the usual OBS-to-YouTube workflow: YouTube recommends it, and it encrypts the RTMP connection. The available latency mode depends on configuration; using RTMPS alone does not guarantee a particular latency.

HLS and DASH are other YouTube ingest protocols, but neither is a shortcut for pointing YouTube at a looping MP4. They use segment-based workflows and generally have higher latency than RTMP-family ingest. HLS has particularly specific requirements: muxed audio and video in M2TS segments, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, HTTPS, and a changing media playlist with valid sequence and segment rules. Google recommends HLS segments of one to four seconds and says they must not exceed five seconds. That makes HLS unsuitable as a simple “upload an MP4 and loop it” alternative to OBS.

Troubleshooting playback and stream issues

  • The MP4 does not appear or play: Confirm the file path is correct and that the file opens locally. MP4 is a container, and support for the container does not guarantee every codec combination will decode on every operating system or OBS build. If it still fails, inspect the file’s video and audio codecs and test a compatible export; conversion is a fallback, not a requirement of the basic loop setup.
  • The video plays but the stream has no sound: Check that the Media Source is not muted, its audio is reaching the OBS mixer, and the stream’s audio output is configured. Confirm sound in a private or otherwise appropriate test broadcast before relying on it.
  • The playlist source is missing or unavailable: Install VLC and verify its architecture matches OBS. OBS specifically requires 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS.
  • The live control room shows no incoming stream: Confirm OBS is connected to the intended YouTube service and that the stream key matches the active stream. If you exposed the key, replace it in YouTube before streaming again.
  • YouTube reports poor stream health: Check that the encoder is using a supported codec, CBR, an appropriate bitrate for the chosen resolution and frame rate, and a keyframe interval within YouTube’s guidance. Test with representative media and monitor the control room’s health indicators.
  • The stream ends when a file finishes: For one file, verify Loop is enabled in Media Source properties. For multiple files, check Loop Playlist on the VLC Video source.

Copyright and YouTube live eligibility

Having the technical ability to loop a video does not grant permission to broadcast its contents. Use media you own or are licensed to stream, including music and other material embedded in the MP4. YouTube may identify copyrighted material or restrict a live broadcast. A loop also does not by itself establish that a channel or video complies with YouTube’s monetization policies; repetitive or reused material can raise separate policy questions. Review YouTube’s current rules for the content and channel before running a long-term stream.
