Scrivus is presented as a desktop writing app for long-form fiction that keeps a project in a local .scrivus folder instead of requiring an account or cloud service. Its author describes a rich-text editor and binder for organizing chapters, scenes, notes, and folders, with worldbuilding alongside manuscript drafting. Some additional features—including Word import and EPUB export—are reported by a secondary overview and should be treated as reported capabilities, not independently verified ones.
What is Scrivus?
Scrivus is a novel-writing and worldbuilding application. In a June 3, 2026 announcement, its author framed it as a local-first app for long-form fiction and described a writing area paired with a binder for organizing manuscript and supporting material. That makes its central idea a single workspace for drafting and keeping story elements arranged, rather than a general-purpose text editor.

The author describes the project as a .scrivus folder on the writer’s machine, with no account required. This is a statement about the intended storage model; it does not, by itself, establish how the app behaves offline, how projects are backed up, or how portable they are between systems.

Drafting and binder
The author describes a rich-text editor for writing and a binder that can contain chapters, scenes, notes, and folders. The structure is intended to let a writer arrange a manuscript and keep related materials near it. The announcement does not establish details such as editor compatibility, formatting fidelity, or how the binder’s contents are represented internally beyond the project-folder description.
Planning, worldbuilding, and revision
A September 30, 2026 LinuxLinks overview reports a broader feature set: focus mode, writing goals and sprints, outline and pacing views, a freeform planning canvas, a Lore Book for characters and places, and an Atlas for story maps. It also describes draft comparison and a revision workspace with anchored comments and resolved discussions. These are features reported by that overview, not independently confirmed here for a particular release.
Is Scrivus free, and where are projects stored?
The author’s June 3, 2026 announcement says Scrivus is free, has no subscription, and is open source under the MIT license. The author also says: “Your project lives in a .scrivus folder on your machine and stays there.” These are author-stated terms and storage claims; the current repository license and current pricing were not independently checked.

Keeping a project in a local folder can give the writer direct access to the project files, but local storage is not the same as a backup. The available descriptions do not establish automatic backup, recovery, synchronization, or long-term compatibility arrangements. Writers with valuable work should confirm how the current app handles those needs before relying on it as their only copy.
