Neither ScreenshotOne nor Selenium supplies the recurring schedule in the documented capture workflow. You need a separate scheduler—such as the one in your CI or hosting environment—to launch each run. ScreenshotOne is a managed capture API; Selenium is a browser automation framework you operate. Choose ScreenshotOne for API-driven captures with documented rendering controls and less browser infrastructure to manage. Choose Selenium when you need scripted browser interaction, control over the browser environment, or a cross-browser test setup.
What the comparison means for a scheduled capture
A recurring webpage capture has three separate parts: a trigger, a capture process, and somewhere to deliver or store the result. The trigger starts the run at the desired interval. ScreenshotOne or Selenium performs the capture. Your application or workflow handles output delivery, retries, and any missed or overlapping runs.

The official documentation reviewed for both products describes capture and automation capabilities, but does not establish a built-in recurring scheduler. ScreenshotOne’s asynchronous requests and webhooks handle request completion and result delivery; they do not schedule recurring captures. Selenium WebDriver and Grid likewise do not provide the recurring trigger in the documented workflow.

ScreenshotOne accepts a URL, HTML, or Markdown as input and can return images, PDF, HTML, or Markdown, depending on the request. Its options include viewport sizing and device emulation, full-page or element capture, selectors, custom scripts and styles, wait conditions, and timeouts. Device settings represent emulation, not use of a physical device. See the ScreenshotOne API documentation.

Request and scheduling flow
- Set up a scheduler in your existing deployment environment to start the capture program at the desired interval.
- Have that program send an authenticated HTTPS request to ScreenshotOne for each target URL. The API supports an access key as a GET parameter, a POST JSON field, or an
X-Access-Keyheader. Use HTTPS: the vendor warns that HTTP does not encrypt access keys, authorization headers, cookies, or other sensitive data in transit. - Save or forward the returned file to your chosen destination. For asynchronous captures, configure your application to handle completion; a webhook can report the result, but your application still arranges the recurring run and any retry policy.
For larger HTML or Markdown inputs, ScreenshotOne recommends POST JSON rather than putting the content in a URL. For multiple URLs, its bulk endpoint wraps regular capture endpoints. The documentation says bulk requests share the same one-minute request bucket as ordinary requests, and that processing is lazy unless execute=true is selected. Submitting a bulk request alone therefore does not mean every screenshot has already rendered; account for execution and result handling in the workflow.
Documented timing limits
ScreenshotOne’s current options documentation lists a 60-second default request timeout, with a 90-second maximum, and a 30-second default and maximum navigation timeout. The delay option is normally limited to 30 seconds. A longer delay requires a timeout greater than 300 seconds and is allowed only for asynchronous requests. These are vendor-documented limits, not guarantees that a particular site will finish loading within them.

Selenium: capture with a browser you control
Selenium WebDriver uses language bindings and browser-specific implementations to control a browser. Its installation documentation describes setting up the language binding, browser, and driver; Selenium Manager can help manage drivers. WebDriver can capture the current browsing context or a selected element, and its examples show saving screenshot data to a local file. See the Selenium documentation and the WebDriver screenshot examples.

Request and scheduling flow
- Set up the language binding and browser environment your capture program needs. Use Selenium Manager where appropriate to help manage browser drivers.
- Write a WebDriver script that opens the target page, performs any required browser actions, waits for the page state you need, and saves a screenshot.
- Configure a separate scheduler to start that script at the desired interval. Decide how the job handles failures, overlapping runs, and storage or delivery of the screenshot.
If you need remote execution or distribution across machines, Selenium Grid routes WebDriver scripts to browser instances. The Selenium documentation describes Grid as useful for parallel work across machines, browser types, browser versions, and operating systems. This flexibility comes with deployment and security responsibilities: Selenium warns that Grid must be protected with appropriate firewall permissions because exposure can let third parties access internal applications or run binaries.

Which approach fits your capture job?
| Need or constraint | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Standard recurring URL captures with common viewport, full-page, or output-format controls | ScreenshotOne | A managed API handles the rendering side; the scheduler and result workflow remain yours. |
| Multi-step interaction before taking the screenshot | Selenium is the more direct fit | WebDriver scripts can control browser actions. ScreenshotOne documents injected scripts and capture options, but validate any complex interaction requirement against its current capabilities. |
| Control over browser versions or execution environment | Selenium | You operate the browser environment, locally or through Grid. |
| Distributed runs or cross-browser coverage | Selenium Grid | Grid routes scripts across configured remote instances; capacity depends on your deployment. |
| Less browser infrastructure to operate | ScreenshotOne | The service exposes capture through an API instead of requiring you to operate the browser stack. |
| Recurring trigger, secrets, retries, overlap handling, and output destination | Either, with separate orchestration | Those are responsibilities of the scheduled job and its surrounding application or workflow. |
These are capability-based choices, not results of a head-to-head test. The available documentation does not establish comparative pricing, speed, or reliability under a shared workload. If those factors determine the decision, pilot both approaches against your own pages, schedule, output needs, and failure conditions rather than inferring a winner from feature descriptions.
Operations, reliability, and cost considerations
- Scheduler behavior: Define what happens when a run is missed, a prior run is still active, or the capture fails. Neither capture choice removes the need to plan those cases.
- Secrets: Keep API keys and browser credentials out of public code and logs. For ScreenshotOne, use HTTPS to protect the key and other sensitive request data in transit.
- Concurrency: ScreenshotOne’s documented bulk wrapper shares the one-minute request bucket with ordinary requests. For Selenium Grid, available parallelism depends on the nodes and capacity you configure.
- Reliability claims: ScreenshotOne’s homepage displayed a vendor-reported 99.957% uptime over the prior 30 days when viewed on October 3, 2026. This is a rolling-period vendor claim, not an independent measurement or a comparison with Selenium.
- Version changes: Selenium’s downloads page listed version 4.49.0, released September 9, 2026, as the stable release at the time the sources were reviewed. Check the current downloads page when pinning a version.
- Pricing: The documented material does not establish a comparable total cost for ScreenshotOne and Selenium. Include service charges, compute, storage, maintenance, and the staff time to operate browsers when estimating your workload-specific cost.
Or skip the browser setup: use ScreenshotNeo
If you want a managed screenshot API rather than operating a browser stack, ScreenshotNeo is an alternative to try first: it removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed; and an MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. It includes 1,000 screenshots per month free with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. The recurring schedule still needs to come from your own scheduler.
One GET request can return a screenshot. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
