You can use VLC to play a radio playlist, but a playlist in VLC is not by itself a YouTube Live broadcast. YouTube needs a compatible live audio/video output sent through a supported ingest protocol. The available documentation does not confirm a current, reliable VLC-only RTMPS workflow, so do not assume that VLC’s general streaming options will connect directly to YouTube. Use VLC as the playlist source only if you can route its output into a compatible encoder, then verify the stream in YouTube Live Control Room.
What you need to stream a radio playlist
There are two separate stages: VLC reads and plays the playlist; an encoder creates and sends a live stream to YouTube. VideoLAN says, “VLC is able to stream all that it can read,” and describes VLC’s ability to act as a server and client for network streams. That general capability does not establish that a current VLC version can directly send a YouTube-compatible RTMPS stream. VideoLAN’s streaming overview

- A playlist or audio source that VLC can play.
- A YouTube Live broadcast configured for encoder streaming.
- A compatible encoder output containing audio and video, delivered through an ingest protocol YouTube supports.
- Access to the stream key, which must remain private.
A static M3U or PLS playlist is a list of media sources for playback, not a live ingest stream. A radio-only audio playlist also should not be assumed to satisfy YouTube’s live encoder requirements on its own.
Configure YouTube Live and protect the stream key
- In YouTube Studio, create or configure a live stream for encoder streaming. Follow the current instructions in YouTube Help: Set up your encoder for live streaming.
- Copy the ingest details and stream key shown for that broadcast into the encoder you use. Do not display or share the key: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
- Choose RTMPS when the encoder supports it. YouTube Help recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Confirm the current server and key details in YouTube Studio rather than relying on old screenshots or saved settings.
- Start the encoder and check the preview and stream status in YouTube Live Control Room before making the broadcast public or scheduling it.
Match the encoder output to YouTube’s requirements
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 for video, and AAC or MP3 for audio. It calls for constant bitrate encoding and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of four seconds. Consult YouTube Help: Encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the current settings for your chosen resolution and frame rate; do not pick a bitrate from an unrelated setup, because requirements vary by output.

For a radio playlist, the encoder still needs to create a compatible audio/video stream. If your chosen workflow has audio but no video, add an appropriate visual source in the encoder and confirm that its output meets YouTube’s current requirements. A normal audio playlist is not the same thing as an HLS ingest playlist: HLS ingest has its own media-playlist and segment requirements, described in YouTube Help’s HLS ingest guidance.
Can VLC alone stream the playlist directly?
The available official VLC documentation describes broad streaming capability and output types such as HTTP and file, but it does not verify a current VLC-only RTMPS setup for YouTube Live. YouTube’s ingest guidance and VLC’s general streaming overview therefore do not provide a confirmed menu path or command for sending a playlist directly from VLC to YouTube. Avoid relying on an unverified VLC menu sequence or command line as if it were a supported, tested workflow.

If you want to keep VLC in the workflow, use it to play the playlist and route its output into a compatible encoder that supports YouTube’s current ingest protocol and audio/video requirements. Check the documentation for the specific VLC version, operating system, and encoder you intend to use. Confirm that the handoff preserves continuous playback, produces the required output, and reaches the YouTube preview before relying on it for a long broadcast.
Check playlist continuity and music rights
Before going live, test that the playlist advances from one item to the next and that the encoder continues sending audio and video through transitions, unavailable files, or interrupted radio sources. Monitor the YouTube preview and stream status rather than assuming that VLC’s local playback means the live broadcast is healthy.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
Only stream music and other material you have the necessary rights to use. Review YouTube’s current rules and the terms that apply to each recording or radio source before broadcasting; rights and platform enforcement depend on the material and circumstances.
Troubleshoot common failures
- YouTube receives no signal: check that the encoder is running, that its ingest address and stream key match the current YouTube Live configuration, and that you selected RTMPS if supported.
- The encoder connects but YouTube shows an error or no usable preview: check that the output includes both audio and video and that codecs, constant bitrate, and keyframe interval conform to YouTube’s current encoder guidance.
- VLC plays locally but the live stream is silent: confirm that the encoder is receiving VLC’s audio output and that the chosen audio codec is supported. Local VLC playback alone does not confirm that audio is reaching the encoder.
- The playlist stops or skips: check whether the current item is reachable and playable, and whether the playlist is configured to advance. Test transitions before leaving the broadcast unattended.
- A static playlist or ordinary HLS file does not work as expected: a playback playlist is not automatically an ingest stream. For HLS, follow YouTube’s specific media-playlist and segment requirements.
- The stream key may have been exposed: replace or reset it using YouTube Studio’s current controls, then update the encoder before restarting.
