Choose dimensions for the output’s intended use. A small thumbnail does not need the same pixel dimensions as a full-width page preview. If you enlarge a small capture in an editor or on a page, it may appear soft because the display is stretching the available pixels.

The API’s documented zoom range is 10% through 400%. ScreenshotMachine says the parameter is useful for a high-resolution screenshot and gives zoom=200 as an example that produces an image twice as large as a capture at 100% zoom. The documentation also notes that zoom is ignored for screenshots smaller than typical device dimensions.

Try increasing zoom when you need a larger rendered capture, but distinguish output size from source detail: zoom does not guarantee sharper text or higher-quality source images. The API documentation describes the purpose of the parameter as: “This parameter is useful when you want to capture high resolution screenshot.”
3. Match the emulated device to the viewport
ScreenshotMachine offers desktop, phone, and tablet device choices. Device emulation can affect page layout and which images a responsive site selects, so check both the selected device and the requested dimensions. Its generator gives these example viewports: desktop 1024 × 768, phone 480 × 800, and tablet 800 × 1280. The ScreenshotMachine generator notes that modern pages can look different across device types.

- For a desktop capture, use a desktop device and a desktop-sized viewport.
- For a phone capture, select phone emulation and use a narrow, tall viewport.
- For tablet output, choose tablet emulation and a corresponding viewport.
When diagnosing softness, change one setting at a time so you can tell whether the difference came from dimensions, zoom, or device rendering.

4. Wait for late-loading page content
The API’s default delay is 200 ms and the accepted values extend to 10,000 ms. ScreenshotMachine recommends considering 2000 ms or more for long pages containing images or animations. Increasing delay can help if relevant content has not finished loading by capture time; it is not documented as an image-sharpening or resolution control. See the API delay parameter.

If an image is missing or partly rendered, test a longer delay while keeping the rest of the request unchanged. If the image is present but still soft, waiting longer may not help.
5. Compare formats without changing other settings
ScreenshotMachine lists JPG, PNG, and GIF output formats. The cited API and pricing materials do not establish one format as universally sharpest or publish a comparative quality ranking. To investigate, capture the same URL with the same viewport, dimensions, device, zoom, delay, and cache setting, changing only the format; then compare the resulting files. This is a controlled diagnostic suggestion, not a reported test result.

6. Make sure the result is fresh
The API’s cacheLimit setting controls the acceptable age of a cached image from 0 to 14 days; cacheLimit=0 requests a fresh screenshot. ScreenshotMachine’s pricing FAQ says screenshots are cached for 14 days and cached loads are not billed. If the page changed recently, request a fresh capture before comparing visual quality. A practical troubleshooting sequence
- Inspect the actual file dimensions. If the capture is only 120 × 90 pixels, add explicit width and height values suitable for your intended display.
- Confirm the device and viewport. Make sure desktop, phone, or tablet emulation matches the layout you expect to capture.
- Test zoom. Try a higher documented zoom value, remembering that zoom may be ignored below typical device dimensions and does not restore missing source detail.
- Wait for content only if it is late. Raise the delay for pages whose images or animations need more time, not as a general blur fix.
- Compare formats and freshness separately. Hold all other settings constant while testing JPG, PNG, or GIF, and use
cacheLimit=0when you need a fresh result.
If the file remains soft, include the exact request settings and the output file in a support report. Those details help distinguish a small capture, a responsive-layout difference, a late-loading image, or a source asset that is itself low resolution; the documented controls do not identify the cause of any particular user’s blurry screenshot.
