Open Graph metadata does not switch a share image based on whether a viewer uses dark mode. The og:image property names the image URL for the page; color-scheme describes the color schemes a web document supports or prefers. To make a preview hold up across light and dark interfaces, use a clear, adaptable image and verify the actual rendered preview on the platform where it will be shared.
Why dark mode does not select a different Open Graph image
The Open Graph protocol describes og:image as an image URL representing a page. It offers optional image metadata such as type, width, height, secure URL and alt text, but does not define a light-versus-dark image selector. Open Graph Protocol documentation

HTML color-scheme metadata communicates a document’s support for or preference toward light and dark schemes. It does not tell a social preview crawler to choose a different og:image. These are separate mechanisms: your page can adapt its own colors while its share metadata continues to point to one image.

Design one image that works on light and dark surfaces
Because the metadata identifies an image URL rather than a mode-specific variant, design the asset to remain legible when the surrounding preview interface changes. This is practical design guidance, not a protocol requirement or a guarantee about how a platform will display it.

- WIDE DEVICE COMPATIBILITY - Supports unlimited number of displays (per computer capability) and offers native USB-C connection plus an included USB-A adapter, ensuring seamless connectivity with modern laptops and desktop computers for streamlined use. StudioMatch and SpyderTune keep color consistent across multi-monitor setups.
- USER-FRIENDLY SOFTWARE - Features an intuitive interface supporting 10 languages, including English, Spanish, French, German, Chinese and Japanese, making calibration accessible to a global audience. Existing SpyderPro users upgrade to the new software free.
- Give the subject clear separation from the background so its edges do not disappear against either a light or dark interface.
- Avoid relying on a white or black outer edge to explain the composition; that edge may blend into the surrounding surface.
- Keep essential meaning in the image’s central subject and composition, rather than in small decorative details.
- Keep text out of the image when possible. Apple notes that Messages previews can appear at varying sizes and advises avoiding text in preview images because it may become unreadable. Apple Developer Documentation: TN3156
There is no universal dimension or palette that guarantees the same appearance everywhere. Google’s guidance on image previews concerns Google Search: image selection there is automated, and Google recommends relevant, representative images, avoiding extreme aspect ratios and using high-resolution images where possible. That guidance should not be treated as a rule for social networks. Google Search Central: Google Images
Add the Open Graph metadata to the rendered page head
Plain HTML
Include the required Open Graph properties in the document head, using the canonical page URL and an absolute, publicly reachable image URL. Add descriptive alt text for the image. The following is a pattern; replace the example values with the page’s real details.

Next.js App Router
In Next.js, put an opengraph-image.jpg, opengraph-image.jpeg, opengraph-image.png or opengraph-image.gif file in the relevant route segment, or generate the image through an opengraph-image route. Next.js says this convention adds the appropriate metadata to the page head. Its documentation shows a 1200 × 630 example; treat that as a framework example, not a cross-platform promise. Confirm current supported formats and file-size limits in the framework documentation before deploying. Next.js: opengraph-image

Check what crawlers and people will actually see
- Inspect the final HTML response. Check the deployed page’s rendered head and verify that
og:imagepoints to the intended absolute URL. Do not rely only on a template or local source file. - Open the image URL directly. Confirm it serves the intended image and is reachable to the relevant platform crawler. The Open Graph protocol defines the metadata field, but crawler fetch requirements vary; check the target platform’s current documentation.
- Test the composition at small sizes. View the image against both light and dark backgrounds, and check that its subject remains distinct after scaling down.
- Use the destination’s preview or debugging tool. Preview systems and caches are platform-specific. The sources cited here do not establish one cache-refresh procedure that works across services.
- Verify framework-generated output after deployment. If you use a Next.js image convention, inspect the resulting head and image URL on the live route rather than assuming the convention produced the intended deployed result.
Choose a single resilient image unless a platform supports another choice
A single static image is the simplest dependable approach because the reviewed official sources do not establish that social platforms select a mode-specific image according to a viewer’s dark-mode preference. Maintaining separate light and dark assets may add work without changing what a destination consumes. Consider separate variants only when the specific destination documents a way to select or use them; verify that behavior directly with its current documentation.
Troubleshooting a preview that looks wrong
- The page’s dark mode works, but the share image stays the same: This is expected.
color-schemedoes not select an alternate Open Graph image; update the fixed image if its composition needs improvement. - The preview shows the wrong image: Inspect the deployed HTML for the actual
og:imagevalue, then open that URL directly. If the metadata is correct but the preview is stale, use the destination’s own debugging or preview mechanism; cache behavior differs by platform. - The image is missing: Check for an absolute image URL in the head and confirm the file is publicly reachable. Then consult the destination platform’s current crawler and image-fetch requirements; the protocol alone does not specify every platform’s fetch behavior.
- The image is technically correct but hard to read: Rework the composition for contrast against both light and dark surroundings, and remove small essential text. Messages previews can vary in size, as Apple explains in TN3156.
- A Next.js page emits unexpected metadata: Check the route segment’s image convention and inspect the generated tags and asset URL on the deployed page.
